Rio de Janiero - the land of big bronzed bikini clad butts and high esteems. What other size 18 women bare their mounds in fetching fluoro-coloured bikinis? Bikinis which are more an assortment of small triangles held together by flimsy elastic than what one would consider swimwear. Bikinis that dig into side back flesh and disappear into folds. Good on them - this is not a criticism - more the bemused observation of a citizen of a less conservative, perhaps more ostracised, nation. Rio doesn't need to make excuses or conform to our warped sense of normal; it's got too much to hold in its stride. Nic, Grace and I have abandoned local for the most apparent tourists. Sipping on acai (Pron. ass-ay-ee) on the way to the "paia" in newly purchased Haviannas and leopard print ... read more

So, when we left your last we were undecided as to what we were going to do that night. In the end we decided to go to this Samba School Rehearsal which was out in the Favelas (sort of like their slums) but we were feeling pretty tired and so due to our last minute decision we ran to the hostel bar and downed a couple of Caiprinhas to get a bit of a sugar rush (or drunk after 2 in my case) before the transfer picked us up a few minutes later. After another ride in a death cab, which is apparently the only kind of ride you can take in Rio, we arrived in the Favelas and the driver said we were going to have a drink in a local bar before we went ... read more

As we sit here facing the prospect of our impending flight home we ask ourselves how are we going to sum up our trip! anyway we will start at what we have been doing since we got back into rio. we arrived in rio after our flight from iguazu at 2045 and after a bit of haggling we jumped in a taxi and headed for our hostel in copacabana. We arrived at the hostel at 2130, although we seemingly had the right place there were no signs and no lights were on, puzzled we tried the door bell in the hope someone would come and welcome us! no answer so we tried again, then finally the door was opened by an australian women (who turned out to be a bit mental). it was obvious that she ... read more

Oi ! Rio is amazing and I think there is nobody in the world who would not be enchanted by this city. After being here for five days now I was on the Pão Acucar right at sunset, have fallen in love with Santa Teresa which is a calm, arty barrio in Lapa (Lapa itself is the best part for me anyway), have had coconuts on the Copacabana, Ipanema and Leme and have met awesome people. Hard to move on to São Paolo again on Monday..yesterday we went to the black market where you can buy the typical stuff from mobile phones over jewellery (which is ugly ;-D) up to fake and real football strips ( of course!! ) I moved with Sam (my friend from England) to another hostel yesterday which is in a so ... read more

Copacabana Beach.

Arrived yesterday - very early! Met a couple of girls from Leeds who we got a taxi to our hostel with as our pick up didn´t show up! Dropped our bags, went for a quick walk around and sat on Copacabana beach for a while before coming back to properly check in. Went back to the beach to meet the girls for a couple of hours, then headed up Sugar Loaf mountain, where we enjoyed our first Brazilian drink. Amazing views over all of Rio. Planned to go out but ended up over-napping and feeling quite dead from the early start, so chilled out at the hostel and had an early night. Went for a lovely long walk around a lagoon en route to the botanical gardens this morning, then headed back to the beach for ... read more

Final thoughts, Well as we await our chariot to the airport, we thought we would kill some time putting our final thoughts down as we reflect on the last 5 and a bit months. Firstly, thanks to our loyal followers – always nice to get messages and to know that people have actually been reading the blog! I think Irene and Graham get the award for most messages sent – thank you. Also nice to find out that after over 5 months and 20-odd blogs, my Dad actually worked out how to read them the week before we go home! So, 3 continents, 19 countries, 3 Wonders of the World, a lot of miles, thousands of pounds, one tropical disease, mucho vino and lot of laughs, it is time to go home – our 6 month ... read more

Can you believe it....how 6 months have flown by...... So we made it to Brazil and had a few days at the beach in Paraty, the place was really quaint and they obviously knew how important the Beaumonts’ are as they had flags up on the cute cobbled streets, fireworks at night and a real fiesta atmosphere – even dancing in the main square for us!!! Not really sure what the fiesta was about…..unable to speak a word of Portuguese has been interesting!!! Anyhow we had a very nice relaxed time here and on one day when we had a long boozy lunch – i drank Lambrusco (something i have not done since uni) and it was nice!!!! Danny in a drunken state even took on a local boy at a penalty shoot out – Rooney ... read more

Today we got a bit of a leep in which was good cos of our late night/early morning excusrion last night! Got up, had breakie and then all had to have a massive clean up of the truck! That took almost 2 hours and then we headed off on our last bus drive as a tour to Rio baby!! It took us 4 hours and drove through the favella, which was incredibly dirty and sad, then arrived at our hostel 2 blocks from Copacobana beach! By the wegot everything sorted it was about 3pm and the sun goes down really early over here so we had maybe 30mins on the beach before it did and started getting cold. I found a strawberry tart which was amazing!!!! And reminded me of mine and mum's amazing holidays together! ... read more
