Hiya guys!!! so we got our bags back 2days late, so not too bad!! Had an amazing time in Rio.... done absolutely loads.... The Christ- took a tram up to it, and these local nutters come on it and started playing drums, and singing in fancy dress! sooo random and funny! Views were incredible, was a clear day so managed to take some goooood pics!! Street parties- basically just all the locals getting very drunk in the street! random bits of samba music everywhere, was a bit dissapointed as didn't really feel involved... just a bunch of gringo's!!! (tourists) but still interesting to see. Carnival parade- aka samba drome, what makes the carnival! poured down with rain the whole time! but amazing costumes and floats, danced the nite away on the steps...crazy to see soo many ... read more

The day had finally arrived, after a year of saving, 9 long & hard months in Liverpool and many occasions where we thought the trip wouldn't be possible; we had said our goodbyes and were catching the train from fairlop to Heathrow, where we had our last taste of British cuisine with a pie & gravy and fish & chips, both with mushy peas! We also, thanks to Kev, got to be flashpackers for a couple of hours with our free VIP airport lounge passes. Several beers & a bottle of rose later, we had shoved as much free food into our bags as possible and boarded our flight. Our flight was 12 hours at 21.30. TAM airlines was ok, we had quite a bit of turbulence but landed with no issues & a few cheers. ... read more

So we are back in the big smoke after our time in itacare and our short stint in Salvador. We have just arrived at our hostel and put our packs down in our room/broom closet, if I spread my arms out I am pretty sure I could touch wall to wall and there are only 5 other people in the same room, well at least it has aircon. Besides for the small room this new hostel seems nice but we are not planing on spending all that much time inside as the party will start in a few days. From what we have heard Rio gets very, very very crazy and busy over carnival and if it´s anything like the vibe in Salvador then its going to be big. I have to say that I am ... read more

Sul/Sud America Photo Blog A brief run down of my south american trip. Down to Rio in the first leg. Was refreshingly warm down there, especially compared to Chicago's biting cold. I didn't do much of the touristy stuff, like go do the sights (esp. on a tour bus-- yikes!!). I usually go about the place the way the locals do it everyday. Eat the way the way the locals do, go around the way the locals do. That gives me a better perspective on the way people live, and that is what interests me in visting a place. If I had wanted climate controlled comforts, I would have stayed back. You know the ship in the harbour kinda quip. And nonody really has time for anybody's inane rants and raves anyway, so I did away ... read more

Having our dinner at Lapa we went to the hotel to sleep. The next day finding our pictures insufficient we visited Christ again to have beter shots. The same day we visited Copacabana and Ipenama beaches. We enjoyed our dinner at Lapa by Samba Dance. The third day we enjoyed the beach life of Copacabana. Day 3 and were starting to get a little bit used to the weather (or so we thought), a little bit hungover as we spent the majority of the night chatting to one of the hostel workers Kieran, getting a bit of information as to what we should consider viewing or visiting, He highly recommend we visit the atlantic rainforest nearby so on we went by metro to see it. An absolutly fantastic setting with all sorts of amazing flowers and species roaming about. Linda didnt like this so much as she reckoned all the (creepy crawlies) were out to get her. We finished the day by chilling out on Ipanema Beach and hung around to watch the sun set. An amazing Sight. WEnt and had dinner in a local Pizza Hut, got charged 85 reais ... read more

Day two temperatures hitting 40 degrees, a bit of a change from Ireland where we left a quite bitter 4degrees. Surprisingly we didnt turn out to be too jet lagged and managed to get most of our Rio sight seeing done today, managing to visit out second wonder of the world Christ the redeemer and the famous sugar loaf mountain. Both were truely amazing sights, starting to fall in love with rio a very very mountainy city. We almost met the hostel owner this evening turns out shes a proper nut, kicking two girlos out at 11pm because they hadnt paid for a 3night stay.... read more

We left for rio this morning early start at 7am. We finally arrived at the airport at about 10pm local time, As soon as we got outside the heat hit us and we were greeted with about a hundred taxi drivers running towards us ushering us into their cabs. We didnt arrive to our hostel Casa Carioka till about 11pm. Looks like a lovely place pity about a very steep hill to get up there, thank god the taxi driver dropped us to the top saving us lugging our bags to the top. Ended up having a beer and getting an early nite.... read more

This night was one of the key reasons for heading out when we did and the reason Laura had come out to meet us... it had to be amazing, didn't it? New years eve is definitely one of those things which can never live up to the hype, but we were definitely going to try! The girls and I were set on having a cracking night together, and after having such a shambolic time trying to keep everyone together at Christian's birthday, we wanted to make sure there was no frustrating hanging about - people were desperate to go out together, so I just said, OK, well you guys do whatever but we will be leaving at 7.30 - with or without you, to set off for Copa. During the day we'd got supplies, some bubbly, ... read more
