Travel blog part 2 - we have entered ¨the sticks¨. Internet speed around here is about 2 bytes per minute and if this post isn´t published before Sunday then you know my temper will have got the better of me and the computer will have been launched out of the window. My mood has not been helped by the fact I was informed this morning that we set off at 11 am tomorrow for a 6 hour bus jouney - Everton kick off at midday local time so I will be dependent on text messages from the usual suspects once again.... Anyway, rant over, and we are now having the time of our lives. Rio was class but we probably spent too much time in the city and our trips up the coast have been first ... read more

Finally made it to Buzios after going backwards and forwards to the bus terminal to book tickets. Checked into the Buzios Adventure Hostel which was far from adventurous! In fact when we left, Boucs went to get our bags and the woman opened the door with the lock and chain still on and handed our bags through the gaps. She also wouldn´t let Boucs use the toilet and slamed the door in his face! Bouzios was great though, we went to 3 different beaches. Tartaruya was quite pretty. This is where Boucs sorted out a fishing trip for us which consisted of us sitting on this boat for 30 mins while it was being inspected by police, then being told its not going fishing, it was actually a water taxi to a nearby town! The second ... read more

Buzios is a trendy little costal town just north of rio; kind of reminded me of a theme park without the rides, just the shops. Some places worth mentioning are Chez Crepe, probably the best most extensive selection of crepes i have ever seen, captains bar and the bar across the road from captains bar where you can listen to 5 units of live music and watch the waves trying to macro elusive geckos. We rented a buggy (the red devil) which was fun but driving in the pooring rain may have been dangerous with no wipers and all. That and the difficulties which ensued each time we had to reverse, which lachlan tells me he mentioned later on... Andrew found it best if he leaned out the side while driving. When we first got the ... read more

Buzios, Brazil Sept. 12 -15 Our trip to Buzios started out badly with a 7 hour bus trip from Rio that should have been 2.5 hours. This bus stopped at the airport and waited for several, late as usual, international flights. Not what we planned on as we should have had ½ a day at the beach and not in a bus. We should have been there for lunch and made it in time for dinner. Buzios is a very busy beach area on the far eastern coast of Brazil about a 2 ½ - 3 hour hour drive from Rio de Janeiro. We stayed at a wonderful, small, hotel called Casa Brancas, ( white houses ) on the water, in the town of Buzios. This area has small beaches in every little cove along the ... read more

Ross: Righteo people. Escaped dead-end Pero. Sure it was lovely but we´d got our sights set on Buzios. Caught the local bus back to Cabo Frio and then another on to Buzios. Buzios was discovered by Bridget Bardot and has since been a holiday destination for the rich and the famous. Dermot O´Leary was here a couple of months ago and Zinedine Zidane more recently (according to our over friendly Argentinian ex-concierge)...apparently. We arrived at the first hostel which wasn´t too bad but instead ended up settling for a different one after a short taxi ride. We headed out for a stroll and got accosted by aformentioned Argentinian hostel owner (not our hostel, another one) who sat us down with coffee and gave us his life story over coffee for 2 hours. He´d worked in quality ... read more

We have spent the past 3 days in a small beach town close to Buzios called Arraial do Cabo in the south of Brazil. but north of Rio de Janiero. Looking around, the place seems like it could be a real paradise. There are several large beaches, nice archetecture. The problem is, the rain. Its been pissing here nonstop! So we took advantage of the bleak, desparate ambience yesterday and visited a cemetary. This place puts a north american one to shame! It was eerie as hell, but also quite peaceful. A paradox! The graves were made out of porceline type boxes about ground, and crosses and plastic flowers were a plenty. As I walked I ran into a cat that must have lived there. A lovely scene watching him wander amid the graves carefully and ... read more

Thursday 17th January Ship Time 1700hrs Home Time 1900hrs Temperature today struggled to 25c First of all a couple of uninteresting happenings. We went to a game of ten pin bowling on one of these Wii Nintendo thingys. I put my name down to join in and Brenda was persuaded to have a go. Well, who do you think won the tournament, yep Brenda, something wrong there but still made her happy. Also we had the howdown evening and as you can see from the picture, her training paid off. Was a good night. Also another invitation with the Purser, yes more free booze, love it. Ok now onto more serious matters. On Tuesday we stopped at Bouzios, in Brazil. As we were at anchor, we had to tender from ship to shore and it was ... read more

We rented a car an drove 2 hours east of Rio to a peninsula called Buzios, which has dozens of beautiful beaches and crystal clear water. Most of the drive was through favelas (squatters housing that has taken over much of Rio and the surrounding areas), so interesting but not so scenic. Drivers are crazy in Rio, so it was a bit stressful for Garth. Once we got to Buzios, we were pleasantly surprised by how quaint it was - a small fishing village with cobble stoned streets and boutiques. Took a short trail to Ossos beach, which was a nice secluded cove. Luckily, there were few tourists. There were lots of food vendors. Their favorites were fresh oysters (which Garth had and lived to tell about it) and freshly steamed corn on the cob. This ... read more
