We left Rio yesterday (7th) in search of some Brazillian culture, beach, sun and in an attempt to try and save some cash - we took a 3 hour bus ride north to the coastal area of Buzios (look it up on Google its paradise)!! Anyway we arrived about 6 last night and got a taxi to our hostel.....we got there and we were the only guests in the whole place!! It felt like we were checking into ´the hostel´just like in the film..when everyone gets killed!! We had to knock a big steel knocker on a piece of wood to get in and then the big creaky door got answered...we crapped ourselves! There was no civilisation and definately no other travellers! anyway it turns out Buzios is really quiet as it is winter here ... read more

ahhhh...brazil. for all of you that have never been to this unique country i suggest you rent the SIMPSONS IN BRAZIL episode or check it out here: (http://s25.quicksharing.com/v/8503513/The_Simpsons_Go_to_Brazil.mpg.html) thanks to Alberto...it gives you a glimpse of the stereotypical qualities that make this place so different from anywhere else in the world. After enjoying a short week in rio...which we will post soon...we headed north to the small beach lined peninsula of buzios. this weekend and summer hot-spot for the brazilians and argentines has changed greatly since i (shane) was here last in '03. the one street of vendors and restaurants has grown to 3 at least and high fashion stores with matching prices have replaced the beachwear only shops. what hasn~t changed is the amazing cobblestone streets that allow strolls along the town~s waterfront that ... read more

... read more

Soooo... we didnt manage to get a watch, or go to Ilha Grande BUT we did manage to go to Buzios!!! Btw, this is Mohini on the blog now so I do apologise if its not as impecably written as Sonals entry! After much deliberation (we thought about staying in Rio, then we thought about going to Parati) and then when we got to the bus station, we totally changed our minds and bought tickets to Buzios! To sum up - Buzios is BEAUTIFUL! It really was like being in a movie - there were sooo many secluded beaches and the sea had a bluey- greeny colour and well...sitting on the beah eating fresh fish and sipping on a caprihna - I think is the ultimate in relaxation! Although... actually getting the vendor on the beach ... read more

We had our first views of Rio as the bus from Curitiba arrived. What an amazing looking city! Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, favellas, etc. Anyway we digress ... Rio is another blog as this time we just passed through. Three hours out of Rio we reached Buzios, a pretty little resort town. We had been recommended Buzios by a waitress in a favourite Argentinian restuarant called Gaucho Grill in Manchester. Not an obvious person to look to for advice but she was Brazilian and it seemed worth a try! We were disappointed to find we had managed to book another cheap hotel parading as a hostel. We were pretty much the only people there and once again no common area or internet or advice. It was the rather unaptly named Adventure Hostel - no adventures ... read more

Arrived about 6pm in Buzios, found a fairly nice hostel - all sharing one room (very cosy). Buzios is a very poular tourist destination, although this seems to be more Brazillian tourists as opposed to ´Gringos´. As such it is relatively expensive here in comparison to the rest of Brazil. The first night was a fairly drunken affair (I was slightly the worse for wear following an absenth). Excellent hostel, late night entertainment provided... Buzios is on a penninsular surrounded by lovely beaches, we went to Tatarunga (forgive spelling) which was very idyllic and had a nice meal together - very romantic setting, although we managed to only order one meal and so had to share. Very charming town with some crazy paving which requires maximum concentration whilst wearing Havianas. Not many photos here as the ... read more

so Penny got back onto that Catamaran. Proud too cos I (Penny) beat some grown men. They filled sack fulls but I only vomited a tiny bit and overboard this time! From Salvador we took a 2hr flight with OceanAir to Rio. We both scared of these little toy planes so I sure the journey has added afew more white hairs - but overal the journey werent too bad - the lack of security on the plane didnt help either - the cock pit door was open the whole flight! We booked a room at a Hostel for the night in Rio, Casa 6 - which was just what we needed to get a good night rest for a cheap price, and then we got the bus to Buzios. It was 3 hours and not a ... read more
