Buzios is a small town 3 hours east of rio de janeiro. It is a small, posh town with with over 17 beaches. The water is always warm, there is good surf and lots of brazillians go there during their holidays. When I visited, it was quite and not much happening at night or during the day due to the fact that it was the weekday and no one was on holiday. due to the off season, things were half the price. we stayed at this nice posuada, which is like a hotel with breakfast included for 25 reals a night. I travelled with my friend mira, a german girl i met on the bus to rio. she has been volunteering in a favella in the south of brazil for 5 months. on the second day, ... read more

Buzios (Feb 20-27) and Buenos Aires (Feb 27-March 6) Buzios... muy tranquilo- as the locals would say. I was last seen at a Rolling Stones concert in Rio celebrating my 19th birthday preparing to head south to El Calafate. It was such a good time I missed my flight the next morning to Buenos Aires and down to Patagonia where some friends I was supposed to meet were heading to tackle the cold southern mountains of the world. I couldn't make it down so I had to figure out what to do; that Sunday was one of those hungover days trying work things out while feeling like dirt for messing things up in the first place- but things always seem to work out. I needed a break from the hectic pace of Rio and a destination ... read more

I never thought I would be so excited about landing in an airport. Rio is the first place I´ve been in a while, where I didn't have to follow the normal route (cash machine, tourist office, transit sort, accommodation sort, food needs...) as I was met by my Aunt Jojo and Uncle Peter. We were accompanied by my newly adopted gran Pene, who sensibly left the grey skies of England for the joys of Brazil. We were then whisked a couple of hours north of Rio to Buzios and met up with my cousins Ross and Blaise. It´s a holiday for all of us, as life in New Jersey for the boys and Jojo is quite a contrast to Brazil. So the holiday from travelling begins... The first stop was to the house of Hilary, a ... read more

Ah, a friendly lttle bookshop with an upstairs couple of machines and a comfortable chair......in this episode we move on down the coast, just a few observations and then to Rio. We´ve been thru big cane, big cashew, big banana, now it seems to be big pawpaw, or papaya again or another local name I haven´t fathomed...and really, its ´small´pawpaw not big pawpaw, but perfectly formed, of course....everyone seems to be planting pawpaws and theres been some genetic monkeying about as these ones have 15 or 20 smallish fruit clustered around the trunk just under the leaf canopy like some multi-testicled ostrich-gone-vegetable.... And the reactions altho´not any more frequent have been spectacular...like one little kid, obviously been waved at by Ted, he was about 10 or so, scrappy rags flapping as he jumped up and down, ... read more
