It all begins outside a church... a man has a pack strapped onto his torso like a man posessed , then the music starts. There is a white man playing guitar and perhaps his father on violin. Everyone is seated around this pack of sambistas conversing in typical brasilian style . . loud and expressive like the drummers, then the peole get off their perfectly round bundas and take to the streets in their hundreds flipping their feet to the irresistible rhythm of samba. The street is intoxicated with noise. . it keeps moving, up the hill, across town .. children are weaving through , beer sellers are carting their barrows, and every song is anthemed by the mass that enshroud the musicians and the human speaker.. Every now and again you bump into a ... read more

The beautiful one... There is a place.. nestled by the sea, built on slopes overlooking the "ogre in a dungeon" city - recife, her name is Olinda. Delapidated and faded, its rolling cobbled streets are a sanctuary for those that stroll through . Fallen romantic portuguese churches are the centrepieces with tall coconut trees dressing the view which is a turquoise shark infested ocean. Olindas historic unesco protected centre houses mainly gays, artists and tourists, but a step or two outside and the landscape is a more familiar one of the poor north east.. where prawns and Pitu (a toxic cachaca) are the staple diet. The days are oppresively humid with a soak late afternoon while the early laser sun sends you scampering for shade. Once a year , brasil hosts carnival...its big, vulgar and exciting. ... read more

So, here I am, travelling round Brazil alone like an incredibly independent mature human being! It is sooooo weird having filled in details that don´t include Lençois, Bahia. Leaving was one of the most difficult things I´ve done. I really loved it there and the people and places were just about unbeatable. My last weeks were fantastic and my friends and boyfriend really spoilt me. I had Délio, Vinny, Coquinho, Gabriel, Edson, Mariana, Aninha and Evando there to see me off at the bus station, which as you can imagine was a tearful experience. I´m already trying to plan a way to go back as soon as humanly possible! I left on Monday on the 11.30 bus and slept alll the way to Salvador. Arrived 05.30 and stayed the whole day in the bus station, getting ... read more

Again our bus took longer than sheduled although this bus only took 14 hours instead of 13 which was not too bad at all, stuck the headphones in and tried to get some sleep. Our last day in Salvador was quite lazy, all we did was wander around the old town and try and find somewhere to have lunch. After that it was back to the hammock in the hostel to chill out till our bus journey! We met a guy from Chile (Matiusz I think) on our bus who is going to Olinda so we decided to travel together for the couple of days. Our bus arrived in Recife and we jumped in a taxi for the 15 minute drive to Olinda, Recife´s neighbouring town and more picturesque competitor! When our taxi arrived we told ... read more

Hey all, sorry for the lack of communication but we were in a little sleepy town just outside of Recife that had no internet, no comuters and we had to walk for 25 minutes to get to the ATM! Apart from the above stated Olinda was a really pretty little town that was full of locals, seafood restaurants and typical Brazilian architecture. On our first night we were so relieved that our cards allowed us to withdraw money to pay for the overpriced taxi we had just got from the airport and once in our overpriced hostel we were tired, starving and overall hot! The latter was thoroughly welcomed and we stripped from our hoodies and jackets. After a quick refreshing wash we headed out to the seafront which was literally over the road and checked ... read more

So I arrived in Recife, late around midnight. I was a little concerned only because I wasn’t sure if my couchsurfer confirmed that it was ok to stay with him and I didn’t have a phone card to call him. Luckily I had made friends with a lovely lady, Cida, that had sat on the plane next to me. She lived or rather worked in Manaus, living there 3 weeks out of the month and visiting her son and husband in Recife one week out of the month. I told her about coushsurfing as she had never heard of it, and about my dilemma of not knowing weather my host was coming to the airport or what. She very generously offered me to use her cell phone. She also generously offered me to stay at her ... read more

I just returned from 9-days in Recife, Olinda, Porto de Galinhas, and Fortaleza. Overall, it was amazing. I actually lived in Northern Brazil as a "younger" man and I was thoroughly impressed with the improvements that have been made since I was there. Recife and Olinda were very clean, safe, and the quality of hotels, food, and activities has increased. If you are not yet familiar with this part of Brazil, there is no better time than the present. Gone are the days of flying all the way to Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, only to turn around and head north. There are now direct flights from major gateways to Recife, Salvador, and Fortaleza. Because of these flights the local governments are getting a lot of pressure to improve infrastructure in these cities. And the ... read more

I am so excited about this trip. I can't wait to go back to my country. It is hard to explain... I love America, but there is nothing like being around your own people, that speaks your language and where you feel one of them. I just wish Brandon was coming with us. It will not be the same without him. But I know I'll have a good time and I just can't wait to show all my favorite places to Tomas. Even that I know that he is too young to really care. Now I just hope our passports get here in time... a little bit more than a month and I'll be back to Brazil!!!!!!!!!!! ... read more
