The camera has been found!!!!!!!!!! Elso´s wife found it while cleaning yesterday. Elso has another tourist group going into the forest for 5 days, so the next challenge is getting the camera here. It´s a good job I´ve got 15 days left before flying back to Rio! Elso is a hero in my eyes - not just in the forest, where he protected me from the multiple perils - I was literally like a three year old, lost in a world of tarantulas, snakes, and caiman, but a hero also in his nobility. He didn´t have to be honest, but he is! Hallelujah. Another honest person! Also, Sherrirra from Sao Paulo sent me all the photos she had, too. Another kind and beautiful person. Man, I´ve been lucky with the people I´ve met on this trip ... read more

I´m not going to beat around the bush - I´ve lost the camera. All the pictures from the trip are gone. I´ve taken over a 1000, plus videos. I went to Elso´s house when we got back to Manaus, the first gringo he´s ever invited to his home. I was quite honored. We sat together in the internet cafe while I did yesterday´s entry, then we got a taxi to his house where his wife, Paula, had prepared delicious food, and we sat around strumming guitars, watching the events in the street below as people came and went and danced in spontaneous parties till about midnight. I remember getting out my journal to swap contact info. I got another taxi from Elso´s house to the airport shortly after midnight for the 3:00am flight. I remember thinking ... read more

After a 24 hour bus journey from Brasilia to Campo Grande, we booked into the HI Hostel across from the Bus Station. After a big night out discussing politics and social issues, and two hours sleep we made our way from Campo Grande to the Pantanal. Actually it was Toms birthday so we had celebrate this joyous occasion with a few Skol scoops. We booked the Pantanal trip from Pantanal Discovery, who have an office in Campo Grande bus station. It cost us e126 for three nights accommodation with all food included which is not bad considering you only have to pay for beer and water after that. We were like a reservoir heading into the Pantanal with all the water we were carrying, we were advised to bring it with us as it was cheaper ... read more

Hi everyone. We´re desperately cramming in our last few blogs before we return to England so you may have to read a few back-to-back, sorry about that! After leaving Iguazu Falls in the south of Brazil we headed straight up to the west of Brazil to an area called the Pantanal which boasts more ecological diversity than any other region on the continent. We had booked a four day trip which would include my 25th birthday as well - not a bad place to celebrate! We arrived at our campsite after a four hour journey from Campo Grande (the nearest city) over some pretty rough terrain to find a beautiful wooden hut on stilts right by a lovely river, the best part though was that our beds were hammocks! That evening we lounged around waiting for ... read more

Mosquitoes. I have never seen so many before in my life! The Pantanal district can be a miserable place for gringos with white, susceptible skin, and Pete and I used an entire 250ml bottle of insect repellent in three days! Upon arrival in a tiny no-horse town we collected our bags from the bus and within two or three minutes (no exaggeration whatsoever) we were all covered with more than 20 bites each. I had enough foresight to stash the repellent in my daypack, so we made plenty of friends in a short time. I have never put Aerogard in my ears or between my toes before but I suppose there's a first time for everything. A cheesy (but practical) open-air safari jeep was waiting for the bus and about 12 travellers (including Anne and Thiago ... read more

Tony and Karen say After a 32 hour bus journey we finally arrived in Cuiaba, phew! It's the capital city of the Matto Grosso region. Its a decent sized city, not much going on though and its main purpose for us was to use it as a gateway to the Pantanal. Matto Grosso is kinda split in two, the North and also Matto Gross do Sul (the South). Having done a wee bit reasearch we decided rather early on that it was the north we wanted to reach the Pantanal from, rather than the south which would have involved a visit to the city of Campo Grande. Essentially we had heard and read that Campo Grande was not a pleasant place and the tours on offer were not all that well organised in comparison to those ... read more

We drove for two days to get from the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park to Poconé. Being so dry it was a spectacular drive but we did see half a dozen toucans and an anteater on the way. Our first stop was at the slightly bizarre and run down resorty Hotel Fazenda Aguas Clara still in the Goiás state. The man in charge tried to push up the prices and in the end we took rooms because he initially wanted too much for camping. There was a swimming pool and a dark lake. I wouldn't dive into that! The next night we camped at a rather unique spot. It was a thermal pool out in the middle of nowhere with a big field where we could camp. There were three big pools of different temperatures where ... read more

so from numerous drunken nights out and goodbyes in Sucre we caught a high quality bus (ahem!) to Santa Cruz- not the epicentre of the universe it must be said! we arrived saturday afternoon- enough time to wander around town, discover there was NOTHING to do so we headed off to the cinema to watch an english film- never have i been more happy to watch harry potter- escape the spanish! then for sushi- however sushi is never my first choice- especially not when the menu is in spanish, and nobody has any idea whats what- so i end up ordering raw meat- carpaccio! eeeuuurgghhh! yuk yuk yuk! sunday there was even less to do in santa cruz, although we also managed to spy a 3 toed sloth, which hung around in the trees in the ... read more

I spent the day hiking through the mountains of Chapada dos Guimaraes with the sun at my back and was rewarded with stunning views of the many waterfalls! Chapada dos Guimaraes is about 60 km outside of Cuiaba and is known for its beautiful valleys and gorgeous waterfalls. Unfortunately, my guide only spoke Portugues and a bit of Spanish and English. I guess there isn't much that needs to be said when you are faced with the obvious beauty of your surroundings. No mosquitos yet :) ... read more
