Given the past few weeks of long bus journeys we decided to treat ourselves and fly from Manaus to Salvador :-) After a few hours on an aeroplane we arrived to Salvador in the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately the hostel we booked for our first night was really really dirty so we moved first thing the following morning to a more central hostel in the old town called Laranjares (brilliant hostel with fantastic staff and facilities). We spent the next couple of days chilling in Salvador, wandering around the streets and visiting churches and local plazas. Despite the poor weather (cloudy and raining!) there is something really appealing about Salvador. The streets are full of colour, the buildings are full of character and regardless of the time of day you can always hear some ... read more

When I was told back in September I would be going to Carnival I couldn’t believe it, carnival is suppose to be the number one festival and this year I would be a part of it…wow. As time went by I didn’t think too much about it until we went to Brazil, for the first time I experienced their traditional music called Samba in Sao Paulo, and it was love at first sound. Samba is a type of music, played in Portuguese, by 5-20 people performing in a band and they all play together while the whole crowd sing along. When I saw this for the first time I was amazed, however it made me think that if Samba had such a deep influence on its people, then what did Axe music (Axe music is ... read more

Salvador is a beautiful colonial city looking out over the South Atlantic - cobbled streets and brightly coloured buildings. Often called Africa in exile due to it's mainly afro-carribean population, we certainly felt like we stood out here more than anywhere (Katie especially). Food in Salvador was far spicier than in the rest of Brazil on account of this, which was certainly a welcome variation. As was a deliecious type of meat called "Carne do Sol" - beef that had been salted and then sun dried (a variation called "Carne do sol y luna" we reasoned was simply the same stuff that they had forgotten to bring in). img= http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v300/145/67/223401787/n223401787_6942251_2874.jpg center Possibly even nicer than Quito Old Town... img= http://photos-h.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v300/145/67/223401787/n223401787_6942255_4120... read more

Hi all! So I have been here in Brasil for about 5 days now and I am having a blast. The people here are amazing. All of us volunteers live in a three story house in a middle class area of Salvador. The beach is about 10 minutes away by foot and I am there any chance I get! I am about 2 shades darker already... Last night we went to the historic part of Salvador named Pelohrinho. Every Tuesday night the town has live music, dancing and lots of food and drinks!!! 8) We danced the night away, it was such a blast and we just made curfew... I guess if you come home late a couple nights you get kicked out... yeah... the rules here are strict and we must obey!!!lol Now it not ... read more

Conoci a Laura una chica ... read more

First of all, I have to apologize to everyone for not having done any updates in the last month of my travels. I am now home, safe and sound and in one piece and experiencing the culture shock of returning home. The final month of my South American adventure was jam packed with amazing sights, sounds, tastes and experiences. I learned what it is truly like to be living out of a backpack, jumping from one place to the next every other day ~ the packing and un-packing. Packing. Unpacking. ~ I don't know how people do it for months at a time! Well, I apologize again for not keeping everyone current on my whereabouts, but I am very happy to take myself back to those places now and share my experiences with you. First stop, ... read more

Today is my last day in Bahia. I got the ferry from Morro de Sao Paulo to Salvador yesterday, and went to a candomble show last night, which was pretty interesting. Everyone wearing white, dancing and making weird noises (supposedly in a trance). This was an "authentic" candomble ritual - "not for the tourists" - but even though there were more tourists than locals, it was still nice. Today I went to another capoeira practice, and I am flying to Rio de Janeio later. I will have 2 more days in Rio, and then home.... read more

I spent the last 2 days in Salvador, doing a little capoeira, and having a good time in general. I went to the afro-brazilian museum, a capoeira lesson, a berimbau (musical instrument used in capoeira) lesson, a capoeira show, and some other things I can´t remember right now. Salvador had a fun vibe to it, with lots of music and capoeira in the streets, even though there are a lot of beggars and hustlers (people offer you a ´gift´ and then want a donation). I also got my luggage back from the airline, which was quite a nice surprise. I plan to go to Lencois, which is a small town near a nice national park, tomorrow or the day after.... read more
