Ok, this is just so everyone gets an idea of what I've been doing. I love it here. I know the pics will seem empty without writing, but I promise I will have entries for the past week and a half by Wednesday (terca-feira). Tchau for now. -James... read more

After one of the carziest weeks of my life on Rio, we decided it was rest time and Salvador was our bed. Only a 2 hour flight from Rio and we arrived in Salvador. The biggest city of Northern Brazil which lies on the coast (yes, more beautiful beaches!!!); it is a city steeped in rich African history and the population here is predominantly African. The weather is roasting as it has been since we crossed the Argentinian border into Brazil. Most of the population are very poor and it seems that the problems associated poverty are predominante here. Yet again though, there is a wealthy population here and disparities are clear to all. However as we have found throughout our travels the people are so kind and thoughtful (though there have been a couple of ... read more

Slept on an actual bed last night, it was much better than the couch we are sharing. Our room has 2 beds and 1 couch, 3 guys. We are rotating who gets beds. Breakfast was ok, but they were out of eggs by the time I got there. Started class at 9am, Rita Cliff (director of Bahia Street) came to the hotel and taught us the Portuguese Alfabeto and numeros 1-20. I enjoy learning new languages. Then at 10:30am we learned about the history of Pelorihno, the settlement of Brazil. Around 12 we grabbed a bus (onibus) to Pelorihno and Rita and Richard explained the history and colonial architecture of the neightborhood. We went into a really fancy, ancient church that had tiles from Portugal, pre-1800 earthquake. The earthquake in Portgual destroyed a lot of the ... read more

At the airport: Salvador is sub-tropical. It was humid and raining when we arrived, but warm. We claimed our luggage and met up with a driver (I didn’t know it then, but his name is Josalino, and I got to know him better as the week went on), he was a welcome surprise at 2am, much better than a taxi. He took us to Barra Flats, and we got our room assignments and went our separate ways. I’m rooming with Ben and Evan, very nice guys. Ben has been in Central America for the last month, and Evan was in NYC a day before I got there (he was in a different part). First thing I did was grab a shower, (my feet smelled terrible, I’d been wearing my TEVA’s since walking around NYC, ew) and ... read more

Salvador de Bahia - African coast of BrazilFollowing our amazing adventure in Iguazu, it was just a short flight and harrowing taxi ride away from our lovely pousada in Salvador de Bahia! It was the first time we had witnessed a driver put eye drops in his eyes whilst steering with his knees on a freeway at 130km/hour! However we were able to quickly get over this trauma for the enticing weather (is hot!), glorious beaches and lively street night life complete with cheap caprihinas and live bands.City highlights: Barra - the beachside neighbourhood we´re staying in is incredible and full of locals milling about, eating at all hours and drinking fresh coconuts in the sun; exploring the amazing gold churches in pelourinho - the area´s oldest neighbourhood; discovering the local cuisine and witnessing firsthand how ... read more

Ciao Belli!

After the wildlife of the Pantanal it was off to Salvador for some beach action as Jane is determined to come home with a tan for Lizzie´s wedding. Salvador was the capital of Brazil and the Portugese empire (apparently they had one?) for a number of years as well as being a major slave centre back in the day. Due to all these factors it has great colonial architecture and a massive African culture. We arrived on Tuesday evening which was a stroke of luck as this is the one week night when the carnival groups all rehearse in the streets, continuing our lucky streak we also bumped into a Swiss couple we had met in the Pantanal who spoke Portugese. We spent the evening listening and watching the most amazing drum band and dancers parade ... read more
