This shouldnt really be called arrival, since I have been in Bolivia for a while, 5 days, but it seems like forever. But since this is my first entry, it should be called arrival, because that is where I will begin. The flight was fine to Miami, and the 8 hours in miami airport were fabulous because i ate my fill (and more) of american sugary products. Then of course I couldnt sleep so I wandered around in a daze, spending muchos dollars. The begining of the flight to la paz was great, was surrounded by bolivians and feeling very excited, talking to the documentary film maker who was sitting next to me, and his subject, chris hoy? the gold medalist for cycling who were on their way to la paz to break a world ... read more
Sucre!

A week is a long time in La Paz, too long by about six and a half days. The Hotel we stayed in was lovely, eating and going out at night is dirt cheap and there are loads of bargains if you like Alpaca jumpers (shame they all come with pictures of lama’s or Pacha Mama stitched into them). However the city is dirty, chaotic and full of thieving toe rags, some of which come from surprising backgrounds. After our week in La Paz we came to realize a few things about the city. All of the cab drivers are illiterate. If you give them an address or god forbid a map of the city centre and ask them to take you there, they look dumbfounded and mystified as if they’d never heard of La ... read more

The heart of bolivia is its mouth.... i made this one up and you can have it for free! I am in Sucre, much disputed capital of bolivia. La Paz is seen as the de facto capital because the government are based there, but sucre believes it is the capital because the declaration of independence was signed here and will be celebrated on 25 may. Every day there are one or more street demos (always peaceful but with lots of firecrackers and shouting!) here to petition for the govt to return to sucre, and people here think the constitution will be changed to this effect before the year is out. I am cycnical about this as I know changing constitutions isnt that easy and there would need to be a good case to shift everything south. ... read more

Sucre is a real breath of fesh air after La Paz: smaller, cleaner, warmer and more attractive. However we didn´t have the best introduction to Bolivia´s constitutional capital due to the fact that we were robbed on the overnight bus there from La Paz. The last overnight bus that we took was in Peru where they have combated the previously popular sport of robbing tourists on buses by making them super-secure. Not only do you need to present your ticket and passport to board an overnight bus in Peru, you are also finger-printed and videoed, just to make you feel that extra bit secure (though according to some this procedure is really used to make it easier to identify the bodies in the event of a fatal crash - try not to think too much about ... read more

The last few days here in Sucre have been lovely. We spent Wednesday wandering around the city centre for over 5 hours picking up school supplies with the help of Alex, our guide from yesterday, who knew pretty much where to go and could help us with negociating a good price. By the end of the day, we had amassed 2 atlases, 4 thick algebra books, 4 dictionaries, an introduction to Maths for primary kids and a set of the first four Harry Potter books. The Harry Potter books weren't actually on the list the teachers gave us but I wanted to donate something fun too and being a big Harry Potter fan, I just couldn't help myself! The day wasn't all work and no play however, as we stopped off in the central market ... read more

Bolivia really is the most amazingly beautiful country. It's sometimes hard to believe we're in the middle of South America in an apparently third world country when we're having such a brilliant time of it but today we saw a bit of both the magnificent splendour and abject poverty of this intriguing land. Today we were off on an adventure into the Maragua crater, which lies about 25 kilometres from Sucre. It was another early start for us with Alex, our guide, collecting us from the hostel at 7am. We were surprised to find that our US$70 not only paid for his servces but also for a 4x4 wheel-drive car and driver! We headed out into the hills, stopping first of all at a lookout point that was interesting to us not only for the ... read more

Sucre is a lovely city. The first thing that struck us was how much nicer the climate is here. Arriving at 7am, it was warm enough not to need a fleece and as the day progressed, it just got warmer and warmer to around 25 degrees - perfect! Rather than head to bed as we usually do after a long overnight bus ride, we felt alive enough to go out exploring. Walking around the centre, it's easy to see why Sucre has been dubbed Bolivia's most beautiful city as it's so clean, well kept and full of startlingly white colonial-era buildings. I was chuffed to find they had named the central plaza in honour of my birthday, 25th May - they must have known I was coming. ;-) Sitting in the square was actually an ... read more

As promised, some more pics from Sucre! Our last full day there was spent doing a day hike toward rock painting, an old local Inca Trail, and pretty much enjoying great vistas all the way. As said before, as pretty as the white city is, it´s surroundings are possibly even more spectacular! Some pics are attached here of this hike, together with Jen and local JoyRide guide Charlie. Also some pics from our second game of "walley", which is a sort of volleyball game, except it´s played in a squash court, and you´re pretty much allowed to use any squash, soccer or badminton trick you can think of !! Ah yes, and then also a light "snack" of the street, barbequed corazon (that´s a cow´s heart). Again, not for the vegetarians amongst us ! Some other ... read more

My first impression of Bolivia when I crossed the border on the 1st of April was...what kind of jungle I got into? Not in a pejorative way but compared with Chile and Argentina, the country just seems like a mess and that is when I really felt that I was in the heart of South America. For the moment I haven't seen one supermarket, you can only see street vendors at every corner and selling random junk. If you need some shampoo you just need to ask one street vendor and they'll point you a hundred metres further at a women with a bowler hat on, chewing coca leafs and with a baby rapped on her back who will solely sell toiletries, nothing else. On the boarder town of Villazon met 3 aussies and we had ... read more

Cochabamba and Sucre South America » Bolivia » Sucre By patrickscottApril 17th 2007Patrick ScottAgain, trying to catch up on where I have been, here is my last entry from my travels in Bolivia before heading back to Canada. Here are some pictures of Cochabamba and Scure. I wish I could elaborate more but that would mean I will just get further and further behind on my blog. The last picture posted here is of my last bus ride in Bolivia before returning to Canada. The accident happened between Sucre and Potosi on the way back to La Paz. Luckily everybody was safe on the bus and in the jeep that hit our bus before sending us into a c... read more
