All It has been a week since our last installment and what a week it has been. England is in the final, Steve is thrilled about it. He attempted to watch the game yesterday in Potosi, but they did not have ESP plus, so he managed to read about the first 25 minutes on the internet and then we had to get a taxi to Sucre. Next Sat being the final it seems that we will be somewhere up the amazon, so very little likely hood of him seeing it, so boyz, keep him posted via the internet and my mobile, as his does not work! Onto more exciting things, like our travel news... After leaving Bariloche, we flew to Santiago (Chile) and arrived late on Tuesday night. We only spent half a day in Santiago ... read more

Nous ... read more

Sucre is stuck in a time warp, actually in two time warps. For one thing UNESCO has declared the city centre a World Heritage Site and it is now forever preserved as it was in the middle to late 19th century. This was the principal city of the Spannish colonial period and all the buildings are in typical late colonial style, white washed and on a tidy grid of quiet streets around a green Plaza de Mayor. Little in the look or feel of the city seems to have changed in the last 150 years, there is little traffic, neon signs are banned and the Plaza is kept in the beautiful yet hazey past. The second time warp means that it is always Sunday in Sucre. The pace of life is slow in this city where ... read more

Since the mines things have not been quite as shocking, but every day is a new adventour in some shape or form. My last full day in Potosi, Hanu and I walked and hiked a little to a skyneedle looking thing on a hill overlooking Potosi, took some pictures and had a beer while checking out the city. Then we went to the Casa de Las Monedas, which is a museum for all of the money making devices that have been used in Potosi for 400 plus years because of the massive silver mine that is the heart of the city´s history. Also they had some native, geological, and artsy things from the area to complete the musuem. Besides waiting for long overdue Chinese food and internet, we did not do much our last day in ... read more

Everytime I go to Potosi I find out about another thing going on there in a few weeks time which I want to go back for. I like Potosi more each time I go back, it feels like a real place. Most travelers only come for a few days to see the mines on their way from Uyuni to somewhere else and so it doesn’t feel very touristy, instead its bustling with students, government workers, miners and real life all combined with altitude, sunny days and cold nights. Which all add up to a pretty tough and hard drinking population. Anyway I thought I’d fit in a quick trip to Sucre in the mean while. There had been lots of problems with student protests and road blocks in Sucre and I wasn’t sure if I would ... read more

Cesta zo Santa Cruz do Sucre bola kapitola sama o sebe a mozno by si zasluzila aj samostatnu kapitolu na blogu, bohuzial v soku ktory nam sposobila sme nespachali ziadne fotky a tudiz nic nebude. Vyrazili sme asi o stvrtej uz skorej spomenutym priblizovadlom oznacenym ako "bus normal". Bola to blizsie neindetifikovatelna skatula japonskej vyroby, ktora zrejme vozila este aj samotneho Che. Medzi cestujucimi sme boli jedini turisti, zbytok bola zmeska bezneho pospoliteho ludu (vsetci vyzerali ako Winnetou..). Hned na zaciatku nasej cesty nas zaujal odhodlane vyzerajuci postrasi nacelnik, ktory s kamennou tvarou stal asi prve styri hodiny v ulicke busu a snad ani nezmurkal. Obratom dostal oznacenie Ironman (ale az taky husty nebol, nakoniec si sadol na zem!). Aj ked ine by ho asi vystihovalo lepsie. Resp. po par hodinach cesty, ked niektori cestujuci zistili, ... read more

We got up early in eager anticipation of our horse riding trek to waterfalls but it has been cancelled, due to the riots. Last nite the students kicked off around the square (practically outside our hotel) setting fire to things and today is no better. there have been massive demonstrations everywhere but mostly in the square and outside the police station - all very near to hotel. we have joined in and waved flags and marched with bottles filled with stones to make noise. it is quite disturbing but appears to be harmless. all the roads have been blocked and the buses are on strike. all shops, banks restaurants etc are closed and almost everyone has hit the streets to demonstrate. we have absolutely nothing to do at all here except wander around. we made it ... read more

Leaving early 07:30 on a minibus we (16 of us) made our way to the airport in La Paz. He is a German tour guide who speaks excellent spanish and english. our group is a little bigger than i expected and all females except two fellas. all are much younger than us. oh well. we arrived at lunchtime. to a city angry with demonstrations and marches taking over the streets. this went on all day and nite - quite exciting actually. they are protesting against the seat of government being in La Paz, wanting it in Sucre !!! all very strange and noisy. loads of firecrackers and fireworks ... read more
