White City
One of the grand buildings on the main plaza. Sucre is a lovely city. The first thing that struck us was how much nicer the climate is here. Arriving at 7am, it was warm enough not to need a fleece and as the day progressed, it just got warmer and warmer to around 25 degrees - perfect!
Rather than head to bed as we usually do after a long overnight bus ride, we felt alive enough to go out exploring. Walking around the centre, it's easy to see why Sucre has been dubbed Bolivia's most beautiful city as it's so clean, well kept and full of startlingly white colonial-era buildings. I was chuffed to find they had named the central plaza in honour of my birthday, 25th May - they must have known I was coming. ;-) Sitting in the square was actually an enjoyable experience for a change. Usually you can't stand still for 2 minutes in a South American plaza without someone trying to sell you something but here, we managed a whole 20 minutes with only one approach from a shoe shine boy. He offered to clean our hiking boots for 1 Boliviano each (that's less than 10 pence for a fair bit of hard
What a Great Day
How nice of Sucre to name the plaza after my birthday, 25th May! work) but instead I gave him a 1B coin and told him he didn't have to work for it. He couldn't believe his luck.
We checked out the local SAS supermarket and a handful of restaurants and were pleased to find that by and large everything is even cheaper here than in La Paz. When it came to tour prices, however, things took a turn for the expensive. We checked out a couple of tour companies who wanted as much as US$43 per person for a basic hiking trip in the local countryside and went back to our hostel feeling very disappointed. When we mentioned it to the hostel owner, he suggested we try a private guide who had been recommended by previous guests at the hostel. An hour later we were introduced to Alex, the guide, and we instantly took a liking to him. He offered us a full day tour that would combine two of the tours offered by the agencies but for just US$70 for the two of us - cheaper than paying for just one single hike! We signed up on the spot for a tour for tomorrow.

Impressive tower from another building on the plaza. way back to the Plaza 25 de Mayo and tried out a 20 Bs 3-course set menu we had spotted earlier in the day. Alas the portions were pathetic and the veggie lasagne was nothing more than a couple of sheets of pasta with a slice of cheese in between, so we won't be returning to the Cafe Tertula, that's for sure! Other than that hiccup, we both like Sucre a lot already but with a 7am start for our hike tomorrow, we didn't have the time or the energy to explore any further and were asleep as soon as our tired heads hit the pillow.
