Sucre Well we finally left La Paz and headed to Sucre. We got the overnight bus which was freezing!!!! Sucre couldn´t be more different from La Paz. Where La Paz is a big city with wide roads and crazy traffic... Sucre is small (for a city), colonial (all the buildings are white with red tiled roofs), the traffic is crazy but it´s all one lane!! Sucre is nestled amongst the hills - its only about 2800m above sea level so its warmer than La Paz. Almost every day the sky is completely blue (although we have had 1 crazy thunder storm). The markets are great here. There is the Central Market and the Mercardo Campesino. In the central market there are more tourists and they hike the prices for us! The Campesino is the best... it´s ... read more

We caught a flight from La Paz to Sucre on 26th August with the idea that we would spend some time doing more spanish lessons in Sucre. Becky and Tim were still there and we met with them. Sucre is an absolutely beautiful place. Very european looking and quite middle class for Bolivia. It houses one of the foremost universities in South America we were told. The majority of people are well dressed, the buildings are sparkling white (because there is a law which requires the buildings to be painted annually), all in all its beautiful. That is until you are unfortunate enough to catch someone pissing in the street! We saw quite alot of this. Men stand openly pissing into the road looking at you as you walk past, old ladies pull a Paula Radcliffe ... read more

I’m in Sucre now, having shared a taxi from Potosi with a lovely German couple. The drive from Potosi was beautiful, from arid high plateau to eucalyptus trees and green parks. Sucre is the other capital city of Bolivia, holding the legislative and judicial branches of government (La Paz being the other, having the executive branch). Sucre has a famous university, and a real college down feel. Only 150,000 people live here, but this weekend there isn’t an empty hotel room, as people are here to celebrate their country’s independence AND the rewriting of their constitution. There is a great feeling here, a feeling of ´out with the old, in with the new´, and people taking a keen interest in the politics and re-writing of the politics. The Bolivian president is of aboriginal ancestry, and for ... read more

we crossed over the border into a little border town which we cant remember the name!!! here we got into taxis and our guide told them not to take us over the railway tracks as he thought it was too dangerous, the driver agreed (after we walked away) they when we were in he took us that way anyway which Bryan really wasn´t happy about! in the town they were having a dispute over what their taxes are spent on so the route over the railway tracks avoided the picket line. the driver took us that way instead of just to the picket line which is what he was supposed to do, think he wanted more money but Bryan just hid in the hotel away from them!!!! Bryan had got us a room for a few ... read more

14 July Ok, so I really don´t want to bore you with another bus horror story, but what happened at La Paz bus station illustrates finely why travelling in South America compared with Europe/Oz etc is a completely different kettle of fish. At least when Spanish is not top of your list of skills. Got to the station way in advance of our departure time for Sucre and as it neared, we moved outside to the departure gate we had been directed to at booking. After a lot of milling about and questioning of about 5 different people, we (ok, so I, Simon was chilling the whole time) felt fairly certain that we were at the right place. However come 6.35pm (5 mins post departure), some other confused English travellers returned to our gate to inform ... read more

Only 3 hours from Potosi, Sucre is such a different place. The center of the city makes you feel as if you were temporarily relocated to some old city in Europe. Sucre is the official capital of Bolivia, although it is much smaller than La Paz (the de-facto capital), and only the supreme court of Bolivia resides in Sucre, while the parliament and the government reside in La Paz. In Sucre we visited the supreme court, some churches and a museum. What? A Little bit of culture won't hurt me... ... read more

The city of Scure is nice: very much on the gringo trail - you spot lots of tourists trying their best not to look like tourists then you go to certain pubs and you could be in a pub in either England or the States. Some pubs actually advertise in the lobby of our hostel as the preferred gringo hangout! Granted we went there on Sunday during the race car rally and sure enough it was filled with non-locals watching the World Cup but the food was good. Orginally, we planned to take the train southward but we missed the weekly 315PM train because the laundry we turned in on Monday morning wasn't going to be ready on time! Ugh, the nice owner said it would be ready at 4PM which meant staying an extra night ... read more

Somehow I have got into the habit of arranging things at the last minute while I am travelling. The day before leaving San Francisco I booked two weeks of Spanish lessons in Sucre, Bolivia, which is why I ended up flying from San Francisco to Miami to La Paz to Santa Cruz one day on my RTW ticket, an overnight stay in Santa Cruz, then a lastminute purchase of a flight from Santa Cruz to Sucre via Cochabamba and La Paz! Luckily,my school had arranged for me to stay in a family home so that I could immerse myself in the Bolivian way of life and the language and so I was grateful when Milton and Silvia met me at the small airport in Sucre after my round-about air tour. Sucre is a beautiful city in ... read more

Sucre is a delightful old university town; founded in 1538, it has retained much of its colonial charm thanks to numerous plazas surrounded by grand building painted in their original colonial white. It’s no surprise that the city was chosen as Bolivia’s constitutional capital. On my first afternoon in Sucre I jumped on the aptly named dino-bus, which ferries groups of tourists to a nearby archaeological site/quarry in a mock safari type vehicle. The site was created in the Cretaceous Period when a big swamp was frequented by huge numbers of dinosaurs whose muddy footprints were preserved, then fossilized in the soft algae ridden mud. The upshot of all this was an 85m high cliff covered with footprints of such famous dinosaurs as Velocoraptor and Brontosaurus; seeing the footprints of reptiles so long extinct was very ... read more
