We wanted to have a few days in the 'Amazon' which from what we´d heard was best and cheapest in Bolivia, north of La Paz. It isn´t really the Amazon proper, actually Madidi on the river Beni which flows into the Amazon. The only problem is that it is either a 20 hour rough bus ride or a flight away on a little plane. From the horror stories we´d heard of grown men crying through fear of the bus tumbling off a cliff and of 20 hour journeys on rubbish buses turning into epics with breakdowns and landslides we decided the better option of taking the plane, which is substantially more expensive but only takes 40 mins. So we set off for La Paz airport at 5am to get our flight an hour later and join ... read more

This blog is about our recent trip into the heart of the Bolivian Amazon We decided to visit the Madidi National park because it has the highest biodiviersity of anywhere on the planet and it is situated on the Rio Beni which flows into the main amazon river. Our starting point was the town of Rurrenabaque deep into the jungle. Because of the terrible roads in Bolivia and its remotness the town is only reachable by plane or via a 3 day boat journey so we decided to fly in. We flew in a tiny propellar plane that had 18 seats and into a grass airstrip just outside of town, as soon as we got off the plane the heat and humidity hit us and we knew we were in the jungle. We booked a 4 ... read more

Vihdoinkin viidakkoon Pak... read more

It was a quick turn around from our Pampas trip; a nights rest then back on another boat to head into the Bolivian jungle. We travelled with a company called Chalalan Ecolodge. They are fairly expensive compared to the other tours on offer, but worth it. All the profits go directly to the community and Chalalan has provided employment for the Tacana villagers since 1995, all the staff take great pride in their jobs which reflects in the service provided. Chalalan Ecolodge is situated deep in the Madidi jungle. It took eight hours to finally arrive at our destination, then it was a 25min walk through the jungle to the lodge. It was real hard work getting up river, several times we had to get out the boat while it was dragged over the shallow water, ... read more

Written by Gali: Onto the jungle portion of our journey... This was the second excursion we took from Rurrenabaque. Madidi national park is a MASSIVE reserve, occupying 1,900,000 Hectares of land, which range from the snow capped mountains surrounding La Paz to the humid jungles way up in Northern Bolivia. As well, there are approximately 4,738 species of plants, 156 types of animals, and 867 bird species. The jungle is much more of what Dani, Seth and I expected from the Amazon in terms of plants and trees. It was stunning!!! We had yet another wicked tour guide, Eric, who happened to be Brad Pitt’s guide some years ago, it was surprising to learn that Brad Pitt had been to Bolivia. The tour set out from Rurrenabaque where we boated on both the Beni & another ... read more

Written by Gali: After hearing amazing recounts from fellow travelers we were all super excited for the Bolivian portion of the Amazon. As the first part of our excursion from Rurrenabaque we headed to Las pampas for 3 days & 2 nights. The word literally translates to swamps or a more appropriate term would be wetlands. Our tour guide, Ronny, was great, he was able to spot the wildlife from miles away, for this reason we nicknamed him Eagle-Eye-Ronny. Our accommodation was laid out in a serene setting...little wooden huts in the middle of nowhere accompanied with the bare minimums...a toilet, cold shower (which was welcomed after the heat of the Amazon), the showers also included HUUUUGE beetles (this all added to the experience), mosquito net covered beds and hammocks to chill out on. We spent ... read more

We went back on forth whether or not we were going to come to the jungle... again. We felt we had done so much jungle stuff in Malaysia that we almost skipped this. Then we went in and talked to Rosa Maria in La Paz. She started Madidi travel and founded the Madidi National Park, where all the tourists of Bolivia go to see the Amazon Basin. She was a staunch advocate for saving the rainforest and even had a National Geographic article written about her and the park in 2000. She single handily convinced us to go to the rainforest and more importantly, she convinced us to go with her company. So many operators here are bad for the environment. They pick up the animals or treat them poorly. Rosa Maria had opened a new ... read more

11th February After another early start we were off for a 5 hour trek around the primary forest surrounding Chalalan. Again we encountered lots of huge trees and other forest plants some with unusual shapes and flowers. Our guide once again shared extensive local knowlage with us on plants used for medicine, dyes and food. We spotted a large hawk bird, brown Capuchn monkeys, squirell monkeys & heared but did not see Peccaries - wild forest pigs. As the forest is far more dense than the Pampas, viewing wildlfe is much harder and the guides use sound to track the animals on the trail. After lunch and a lay in the hammock we headed out on a dugout canoe on lake Chalalan. We paddled around the lake spotting more wildife over to the opposite bank where ... read more
