Okay, so I have been gone for almost a month and I haven't posted a blog yet. For those of you receiving one of these for the first time, welcome. For a quick recap, I left The US on Tuesday, the 11th of April. On the 10th of April I sold the last of my stuff, my mountain bike and my car - fly girl. I only got $150 for fly girl!!! That night I went to a Utah jazz basketball game with my friend Dex. I got free tickets from work - the tickets had a list price of $99 each, almost one and a half times what i got for fly girl, for a basketball game Before I left I was fortunate enough to see my cousin Kerry and her family in park ... read more

Well, we have been having some trouble exiting what we are now referring to as the "cursed south", it appears everyone else down here had the foresight to plan ahead, and manage a way back north. Add to that, its the end of all things pleasant for the area (each morning the snow on the mountains gets closer to town) and the mass exodus has thwarted our efforts to depart. We have been reduced to a 5:30AM day bus, and even then we had to wait two days to get tickets for it. In the meantime we have been keeping busy seeing some more sights, hanging out with the local animals. Yesterday we took a boat just off the coast of Ushuaia southeast into the "bahia de Ushuaia" past the Isles Bridges and further east to ... read more

Well, Sunday night we arrived in Ushuaia after our last southbound bus ride. The bus ride was 12 hours and quite enjoyable because frankly, I slept the entire way. We made our first South Africa connection, a nice fellow who offered us a meal when we get there. Not sure exactly when that will be. Ushuaia is a beautiful city, the route we took from Punta Arenas was mainly dirt roads, and after a quick stint on the ferry we also crossed into Terra del Fuego. The boat ride was a short 20 minutes, we spotted a dolphin and thus we were quite entertained. It was quite curious though because the dolphin looked black and white, so I am not sure what type of dolphins they have down here, or whether I just cannot trust my ... read more

Well a couple days ago we said goodbye to Michael and Doris after a wonderful couple of weeks where we´ve been absolutely spoiled: Jas, Jord and I did not have to do anything but provide entertainment and try to keep up to the two of them on the trail (well until the ankle thing). Thanks to Doris and Michael for everything....it was a pleasure. Their departure marks the end of a month and a half of travelling with people from back home (Makuda, Andre, the Poys, Jacky and Gavin). It seems a little strange just being the three of us again, especially as we approach these next few months...who knows what will happen. Right now, after six months we have finally made it to the southern most city in the world Ushuaia. It marks the end ... read more

We have come to the End of the World, Ushuaia which is the southern most city in the world. Cruise leave from here to the Antartica and guess this will be the nearest I can get to the Antartica. Had only intend to stay here for 4 days but somehow, we spent 6 days here having a wonderful time, not only for the beautiful scenery, but also for the lovely people we meet here in Hostel Cruz Del Sur. The first impression was quite scary. The moment we entered, we see many big guys smoking and drinking and next, we were brought to a dungeon where our room is. However, from the second day onwards, we pretty enjoyed the company of the people in the hostel. We met a Taiwanese girl who has been travelling alone ... read more

I now understand that statement. Ushuaia is the most southern city in the world. I come from Alaska. Both places are cold. I do not like the cold. In fact I hate it. So why am I here at the almost beginning of winter? Just to say that I was here. 12 hours by bus from Rio Gallegos. 16 hours on a bus from Trelew to Rio Gallegos. Sore throat going into full cold status. Unable to sleep in the seats designed for leprechauns. Why? Because it is here. Ok, lets play catch up. I left Necochea for the town of Rawson thinking that since it is a bigger city there would be more to do. I was wrong. Rawson is a manufacturying and political base for the region. Trelew is where the tourism department is ... read more

my first argentine driving experience came in tierra del fuego, when me and a few mates from the hostel, rob from australia, anouk from holland and gina from LA, rented a car and went touring around this amazing place. our car was VW golf hatch with the touchiest brakes and hardest suspension..necessary to avoid accidents because they drive with absolutely no regard for any traffic rules. needless to say driving as fast as the car goes on small roads where lanes are just a suggestion is an experience in itself. once we got out of town, the views were amazing, driving along mountain roads, through the mist and the lakes. after a while, the landscape changed, the road ceased to be paved and we found ourselves among old fashioned farms and grasslands with packs of llamas. ... read more

'The End of the World'... They just love to throw that expression around down here.... 'End of the World this', 'End of the World that'! Ok, it is the southern most city in the world... and quite a beautiful and surreal place, so I guess it is justified. Flying into Ushuaia was breathtaking! We flew down out of the mountain and clouds just behind Ushuaia and made a sharp spiral dive to reveal a small and colourful town on the edge of the Beagle Channel. Getting out into Ushuaia was a breath of fresh air... literally! Getting out of the pollution and the traffic of Buenos Aires was just what I need. I spent five days in Ushuaia and managed to get out and about and do something everyday. I stayed at the Antarctica Hostel, which ... read more

one day in ushuaia, i took a boat cruise in the beagle channel (named for darwin´s ship). the trip is to look at the fur seals, sea lions, and penquins (which were out of season but there were some other birds that looked like penquins). i was extremely lucky because although out of season, we witnessed a pod of 5 orca hunting a group of fur seals which we had spotted playing in the bay.... read more

while in ushuaia, i climbed the mountain at the back of town, which in the winter serves as a ski run, with another UT grad who i met in the hostel. At the top of the mountain was a tiny (compared to others) glacier, at the foot of which was an ice cave created by the glacial melt. ... read more
