That pesky fox. 700g of georgeous dark chocolate, two fine salamis, fresh baked french bread and a packet of olives were its haul from our tent on the first night of the valproaiso circuit trek near Ushuaia. Lesson learned, never leave food in the tent vestubule. Thankfully we had enough food spare to complete this 4 day trek in beautiful mountain scenery near Ushuaia (though pasta and brekfast bars gets pretty monotomous). It was pretty hard going, with large areas of bog, some steep high passes and a general lack of paths. We didn´t realise until one day into the trek that the map only had contours for a small amount of the area, which would have made navigation a bit of a nightmare without GPS. When not trekking Ben and I entertained ourselves by skinny ... read more

Hello chaps, i have decided that i need to start a new blog entry before i forget what i have been doing for the last month. Life on the road has been really busy and i keep finding out about cool new things to do. I last left you having finished the torres del paine circuit and having a big night out to celebrate. The next day i headed off to punta arenas which the best thing i can say about is it was better than puerto natales. It is right at the southern end of chile, and the towns down here on the chilean side are all a bleak collection of houses with tin roofs. Punta arenas however was once a quite rich city as it controlled the passage around cape horn. Therefore it has ... read more

There were no roses or candy this Valentine´s day. Griff and I woke up in the morning, walked across the room to the other from our tiny twin beds, wished each other a Happy Valentine´s Day, and headed to the bus station for our seven hour bus ride to Punta Arenas. The trip was only a portion of our voyage to the end of the earth, Ushuaia, which is on the southern tip of South America. It is one heck of a journey, requiring us to head inland from Argentina, cross the border into Chile, hop another bus from Chile back into Argentina, and drive another twelve hours with a transfer between one junky buss to another. (Each buss gets squishier and older the farther you go.) Most of the twelve hour ride is over gravel ... read more

Angus and I are now in Ushuaia, known as the end of the world as it is the Southern most city in the world. We travelled down by bus via Rio Gallagos where we saw the second largest penguin colony in Argentina, whilst waiting a couple days for the next bus. After taking a ferry crossing across the Megellan Staights we arrived in Ushuaia which is where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet and is surrounded by beautiful mountains. The only thing I don't like about it is there are lots of vicious dogs, but have bought myself a walking stick to fend them off! We hired a car for a few days, and only got lost a few times. We went to Estancia Harberton which is a large farm set up by some English settlers ... read more

Hola! A quick update just to load a few pictures we took on our last BEAUTIFUL day in Ushuaia before we leave on our last tour here in El Calafate. We leave for Bariloche and Villa la Angostura this afternoon. I should be able to catch up then! Other than sensory overload (you won´t BELIEVE the pictures of El Calafate), we are perfect. Some pics of our last day in Ushuaia. It was picture perfect- Alejandro said they only get about 5 a summer like that. We went out on the sailboat "If" to Island H in the Beagle Channel, the last island in Argentina (there are still some islands that belong to Chile before Cape Horn) Island H is a kind of refuge with a lot of tundra plants even though it is close to sea level.... read more

Well, here we are at the end of the earth... Unbelievably beautiful in a totally different way from Iguazu. First, it´s cold! About 15 C- not so cold, but after Iguazu it feels like it, and it´s damp and VERY windy. Yesterday we visited a remote estancia where they have nesting colonies of penguins. About 1 hr 45 mins by car, then about 1/2 hour by zodiac. Just an incredible experience- the scenery is just breathtaking. The Andes aren´t so high here (1200m), but the relief between the mountains and the sea is amazing. There were only 9 people in our group which included coffee and then lunch at the ranch, and they were all very nice. It´s amazing how quickly we became friends. I also love it when people can just switch languages from one ... read more

I had imagined "the end of the world" totally differently. Especially when an elderly english couple on the plane ridiculed me a little for not getting off in Punta Arenas and instead flying on to Ushuaia (WHAAAAAT the ..... are you going THERE for????) I wasn´t quite sure what to expect...and maybe because of that I was rather pleasantly surprised. The flight into Ushuaia was definately one of the best flights ever. The weather was perfect and we spent 3 hours cruising high over the Andes. The view was spectacular; High mountains, glaciers, rugged peaks, perfectly shaped volcanoes and lots of lakes were below us. Then, desert! For hundreds of miles! (What a surpise I thought - hm...guess I hadn´t done my homework and knew nothing about Argentinas Pampa). After 3 wonderful hours the descent into ... read more

What an exhausting day... not that I´m complaining! I awoke at 4am, as my room mate forgot to change the time on her alarm clock, and set it 3 hours early! Breakfast at 7.45 (worse than being at work), then out the door by 8.30am, down to the port. It´s currently summer here in the Southern hemisphere, and today felt very much like a typical English summer day. It was raining, the sky was a definite grey colour, and although not quite cold, the weather wasn´t exactly warm, and I was extremely glad that I decided to pack my waterproof overtrousers at the last minute. However, this morning we went on an amazing boat journey into the Beagle Channel, where good old Darwin came in his famous boat, and made some observations, wrote a book, etc ... read more
