Leaving BA on New Year’s Eve in the morning, foregoing the fab fireworks, promises of endless love and mediocre sex…..driven by the need to get back on 2 wheels…get moving again.....we are all together again, the 3 musketeers plus one, and maybe Mar del Plata will be OK. ... Just one small thing...I'm not sure what transpired or conspired but the last blog was of 2 parts, photos and non. Needless to say, I'm confused. As it turned out MdP was interesting to say the most. Maybe someone else can make something out of it. OK a cut-and paste from some previous entry... PATAGONIA ET AL So now we’re in the South…somewhere south of the bottom of Tassie and still a couple of thousand kms to go to get to the bottom of all this…they call ... read more

We arrived in Ushuaia in the middle of a snow storm, which whilst slightly unnerving given the fact that it was almost the summer solstice, it somehow seemed fitting for Tierra del Fuego. Ushuaia is a fantastic place on the shores of the Beagle channel, with a backdrop of the Andes. We had planned to do a three day trek in the mountains behind the town, but after hearing tales of 8 inches of snow overnight from others in our hostel, I decided that one night in a tent would be more than enough! So we squeezed the three days into two, after agreeing that we were feeling fit enough to walk for long days - a decision I started to regret at about 7pm on the first day with a couple more hours still to ... read more

Sometimes you don't know how lucky you are until after the event. We were sitting down to breakfast the other morning and overheard a conversation about how hard it was getting tickets out of Ushuai. We'd previously been advised by several other people to go get our tickets as soon as we could but hadn't really worried about it because the Lonely Planet guide tells you to do it, and we've got so used to that being wrong that we figured it to be another one of those traveller's myths. Luckily, on an impule, we headed straight down to the bus company to buy our tickets. It was the 19th I think and we got the last two seats out of Ushuai before Chistmas, and we only got them (we later learned from another girl on ... read more

We've made it. Many months ago I was sitting in an internet cafe in what is supposed to be the remotest place on the planet (Easter Island) and now I´m as far south as you can get without being in Antartica. I´m getting a message that I'm destined not to be at the centre of things. Actually, it's been a tough few days getting here. The bus trip from El Calafate to Rio Gallegos was pretty boring, except some annoying git in a cafeteria helped remind me that discrimination is not a purely anglo trait. He repeatedly ignored me trying to get something to eat (in favour of South American clients) for about 20 minutes until I gave up and got into a bad mood instead. When you're tired it's the little things that can really ... read more

Hola Chicos, thanks for all the messages! We're beginning to get used to the lingo out here, faring a bit better than we did in Korea; at least we don´t get too many surprises when ordering food. Unfortunately we don´t quite have enough to ward off taxi drivers in the process of ripping us off! Well we´re not in Antarctica, unless anyone feels like giving us a very nice Christmas present (any takers - go on, it´s only $3000 US.. each...) We could go, but it´d mean we´d be back by, erm, January! So yes, we´re in Ushuaia, southern-most city in the world. (No-one ever mentions Puerto Williams, in Chile, which is quite a bit further down, simply because it´s impossible to get to.) Ushuaia´s beautiful and ugly at the same time; it´s a bright splash ... read more

Ushuaia Latitude: -54.858 Longitude: -68.299 Temperature: 5ºC (40ºF) Altitude: 16m Nearest Equivalent / Equivalencia más aproximada: Sunderland, Northern England ************************************************************************** Leaving the whales behind, we undertook the trip that would take us from Puerto Madryn to Ushuaia, just over 1,000 miles further south. We made the trip in two phases: first by coach to Rio Gallegos, in the South end of the continent where we spent two nights, and later by plane from here to Ushuaia. We didn't find a lot to do in Rio Gallegos, it does have a reputation of being a somewhat ugly city and when we arrived (and during o... read more

Well the weather has indeed been as if it were the end of the world. It's bucketed it down and all that's missing is the four horsemen of the apocolypse riding into to town and stopping off for an empanada (well ok, maybe not Famine - he´d probably give that one a miss). Ah well, we're only 100km or so from Cape Horn, the last land before Antarctica, so what do you expect... Being in Ushuaia has given us the opportunity to kick back for a while. We've had 6 days here, which is a bit of a record for us. The Aerolineas Argentinas pilots are on strike at the moment so we might be here even longer than we bargained unless the government manages to mediate a settlement. Nevermind, I'm sure it will be sorted ... read more

"How civilized air travel is", one of us recently quipped. It's difficult to share that sentiment when it means getting up at stupid o´clock (3am) to catch a 3 hour flight. Well that´s exactly what we did and as a result of such actions we are delighted to now be in Ushuaia - the southernmost city on Earth and self proclaimed "End of the World, beginning of everything". Situated on the shores of the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia is a former penal colony that has boomed into a thriving little tourist town. Upon arrival we booked ourselves on a 6 hour boat trip out into the channel so see cormorants, sea lions and pengiuns. Unfortunately for us, we had inadvertantly booked ourselves on a ´luxury´ trip, and in doing so we discovered that we were the only ... read more

early early flight, managed to catch it and so began our journey. The weather was pretty clear, so we could see the changing scenery below. The land became so deserted and arrid, like a lunar landscape, with sporadic lakes and water like potholes on a rocky road. Some of the water was muddy, matching the brown barren earth around it, but some of the lakes were so blue it was unreal. We were going to Ushuaia first, but stopped off at El Calafate. As we came into land the snow suddenly appeared, in a line across the ground, spreading out like a blanket then disappearing as we landed next to a huge turqoise lake. It looked like we were about to land in the water, it was so beautiful, you could see the snow covered mountains ... read more
