Ushuaia seems to be a place almost impossible to leave...after my attempts to find a flight or bus out, i decided to get on a last minute cruise from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas. It was the second best thing at the time to actually going to Antarctica. Man was I shocked when i was gettin on the boat...i had a group of 70 year old grannies walking behind me... i started thinking- what the hell am i doing gettin on this granny cruise...it turns out that i was the second youngest on the boat...the youngest guy was 25...and he was there with his older brother...i thought that the trip was gonna suck, but mazingly things turned out really fun... Was put on a table for breakfast, lunch and dinner with these 6 spaniards who did not ... read more

This was our first multiday serious trek. It went through a really wild forest, swamps and rivers, and although we enjoyed there, I can't say it was successful. To our disposal we had Lior's navigational skills (He was 'Kravi') and my GPS, and yet the trails were poorly marked, and the terrain tough, so the navigation there was a real problem. After we crossed the river for the first time, we lost the trail, so instead of crossing it only twice as we were supposed to by the trek description, we ended up crossing it 5 times! At the end we were real specialists in crossing a river - With shoes on or off, or by a log (in any case the water was so freezing!) On the way between the crossings we meet a nice ... read more

The southernmost city in the world!!! well so it says on my passport...beautiful harbour, bordered with beautiful white peaked mountains...postcard really!!! and home to tierra del fuego national park...where i did some basic hikes. i stayed in one hostel initially which sucked...got put in a room with parents and their two kids and a 60 year old man who travels 6months of each year alone....and leaves his wife back home!!! It was cramped and noisy...and the staff were rude and unhelpful...i came back one day and found that they had moved all my things across to another room...was not impressed at all...i had a fight with them and left to another hostel...this one rocks...big party scene...met alot of fun people...ate lot of dulce de leche...its divine...the aregntinians have it on everything...caramelised milk jam...for breafast, for desert ... read more

The National Park in Ushuaia is a really nice peace of nature. You can find there lakes, mountains and rivers, as well as quite a few animals. The hike we did in the park was an easy one, and yet we were surprised when on the way we meet a 77 year old woman that was hiking (really slowly, yet hiking!) there with her son. We reached at the end another 'end of the world' sign, although it was less explicit than the one in Ushuaia the city. On our way back, our minibus broke down, so the driver went down to the lake to bring some water (Can it get any more surrealistic?) This didn't help the poor minibus, so we waited for an hour to a replacement. In the meantime we (like true Israelis) ... read more

This on the contrary, to the first hike we made, was a rewarding trek. It went through a forest and a swamp (which wasn't nice to cross), and ended at a beautiful green colored laguna. The nice thing was that the laguna was concealed all the time, until it revealed itself in the end of the trek.... read more

I am now at the self proclaimed "End of the World" as Ushuaia is literally the southern most city in the world before hitting Antarctica. We arrived after about 14 hours on three different buses. The first bus left Puerto Natales at 7:30am and we went along in a sleepy daze for two hours when we stopped in the middle of nowhere, another bus pulled alongside, and our deaf yet touchy bus guy pointed that we should depart, switch our bags to the next bus, and get on it like a sketchy drug deal. So off we went. We were on this bus for several hours, including a brief ferry ride and the border crossing into Argentina. I keep coming and going from these countries so often that I will have 6 or 8 Argentinian stamps ... read more

Hmmm - not sure how to explain this, but it´s probably something to do with the 6 hour hike up a mountain we did the day before...we got to the airport here in Ushuaia this lunchtime for our flight to El Calafate to see the big glacier there. We had spent some of the previous evening and this morning deliberating over whether paying a lot of money for a 10 day boat trip to Antarctica was something we wanted to do, and having spoken to a number of people who¨d done it we were a little unsure whether to go for it. In the end, we decided it´d be best to stick to the plan, and maybe come back later (as if). When we got to the checkin, however, the flight was delayed "for at least ... read more

Still covered in the dust from the fossil park, we arrived in Ushuaia on Saturday evening. It{s the most southerly city in the world and has a stunning setting on the Beagle Channel, surrounded by mountains on most sides, and looks almost nordic in many ways. Guess there is a style of house that suits this kind of weather, so it makes sense there is a similarity between the northern regions and here. It almost came as a surpise to hear people speaking in Spanish though. ´ Saturday night was spent sinking beers in the cosy hostel bar with an American who's been inspiring us with stories of his travels and treking expreiences. The next day, all 3 of us, all feeling a bit sluggish, decided a nice trip aong with Beagle Channel was the right ... read more

This was my first hike in Ushuaia. It started at the end of the city, continued into a forest and went up the mountain. The forest looked like a forest is supposed to look - dense vegetation, mushrooms every few meters, small streams. In some places the trees were so dense that the sunlight was like after sunset, although it was noon. It felt to me as if I'm in some kind of a ferry tail, and the bad witch is going to appear behind some tree at any second. After climbing up the forest we reached the end of the tree line, and from there we could see all Ushuaia as if it was in our hands. We continued up the mountain to reach Laguna Margot. The scenery there looked virgin, and I had a ... read more

On my way from Rio de Janeiro to Ushuaia, the airplane made a stop in Trelew, which is a small town on the way between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia. When the airplane took off, I saw the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen - it was as if the whole land was on fire. Unfortunately it was forbidden to take pictures from the airplane, so I have no photos of it. When I landed in Ushuaia, what made me realize I'm in a completely different place now was the temperature difference - in Rio it was around 35C, and in Ushuaia just 8C! The next day when I went out of the hostel I saw the most scenic scenery one can imagine - mountains from one side, and sea from the other. I knew that ... read more
