JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE WORLD Ushuaia, Argentina As is usual when planning a new trip, daily life gets in the way. I had planned for Patagonia to be my last stop on this journey. But making it happen seemed impossible. I must be getting tired. I thought about not even going…after all, what was such a big thing about Patagonia…what’s in a name? Still, I had said I would end my trip at the tip of the land mass of South America, and that is Tierra del Fuego, the island, and Ushuaia, the town. I finally decided to travel on the fifteenth of August and stay for seven days. This leaves me ten days in Buenos Aires for more tango and time to do the sightseeing I have been putting off. As the date ... read more

I am back in Ushuaia, but only for a few hours. I sit here at a rustic wooden café sipping on some of, what I believe to be, the best hot chocolate in Argentina. Thick and smooth, not too sweet, a dash of spice, a generous topping of cream, spattered with chocolate dust… The chit-chat, the gossip, a young couple, some well-travelled backpackers! It’s a beautiful café, full of old tins and bottles, paintings from times-gone-by, its friendly atmosphere vibrating through my mug as I sip on this treasured beverage… And a slice of cake! Ushuaia is a colourful place, climatically, culturally and historically, and vibrant in the arts too! The city at the bottom of the world is an anomaly. Why is Ushuaia here? What do people do here? It has grown at an accelerated ... read more

We are now in the bus on our way from Ushuaia to Puerto Natales. From Tierra del Fuego to Patagonia. First part was in a mini bus, but for the remaining 12 hours we are in a big bus. We are now a bit more comfortable than in the minibus, but with the downside that this bus is a much easier target for the heavy winds. A few moments earlier the wind blew open one of the air vents in the roof, which now does not seem to close anymore. On our right we can see the Atlantic Ocean from time to time, with the wind pushing the waves even higher. Its quite a nice way to travel, the trip is a bit long but the views are great! We spent three nights in Ushuaia. The ... read more

Ushuaia- (U sh why a), Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina Today we awoke after traversing part of the Beagle Channel in the absolutely beautiful city of Ushuaia. It was before dawn and the lights were on in the city with a background of snow covered mountains. There was not a leaf moving. The waters were so still and the air was still. Pristine. It is truly spectacular. Ushuaia is a modern city on the Grand Island of Tierra del Fuego originally founded as a prison much like Australia. Today it is a bustling town of 70,000 population with no unemployment or crime. The government, in order to encourage people and companies to move here, declared this to be a “no tax” area, so our tour guide, who moved here 7 years ago loves living here and ... read more

Footsteps on a Forest Floor. “To the south we had a scene of savage magnificence, well becoming Tierra del Fuego. There was a degree of mysterious grandeur in mountain behind mountain, with the deep intervening valleys, all covered by one thick, dusky mass of forest. The atmosphere, likewise, in this climate, where gale succeeds gale, with rain hail and sleet, seems blacker than anywhere else. In the Strait of Magellan, looking due southward from Port Famine, the distant channels between mountains appeared from their gloominess to lead beyond the confines of this world” Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle, December 17th 1832. The area surrounding Ushuaia is stunning! I had a week between contracts so off I hiked into the vast emptiness that is only a few minutes from town. I spent a full day in ... read more

Having safely arrived in Ushuaia, the southern most city in the world and commonly known as the "End of the world" we were awed by the landscape. This is why we came to South America for our adventure. The mountains are stunning and expansive, snow capped and formidable. Where BA was about steak, Ushuaia is all about the King Crab! Every restaurant has it on it's menu in some form, even the Irish pub we found had a King crab salad and pasta dish. So, when in Rome....we've feasted on King crab for the majority of our nights here. Part of the reason we decided to go to Ushuaia as our next stop was because it offers some challenging day hikes to help prepare us for our treks later in Patagonia. Although the mountains we hiked ... read more

Olivia's Blog Hi Everybody, I hope everyone is doing well, I miss you a lot. We are four weeks into our trip on an RV (we have named our RV the Deseado) Puerto Deseado is one of my favourite places so far because we went on an expedition. On the way to Isla Pinguino we saw Commerson and Austral Dolphins. The Commerson Dolphin is endangered and can only be found in Patagonia ( they look like mini Orcas) They were so close I touched one! When we arrived on the island we hiked around and saw Magellanic and Rockhopper Penguins, the reason that they are called Rockhopper is because they live in the rocks and hop everywhere, it's hilarious I could watch it all day. We also saw elephant seals and sea lions but they reeked ... read more

Fin del Mundo - End of the world Ushuaia - most southern city in the world, huge tourist city as it is the gate way to the Antarctica. Ushuaia was originally founded as a penal colony (prison) On the edge of the city is also the entrance to Tierra del Fuego National Park. The city is built on a mountain, so every street is layer/tired down to the port. We arrived in Ushuaia just in time for dinner.....their local specialty is King Crab (similar to Alaskan KC) of course Sean being the adventurous eater went for the KC. We woke to the extremely loud sound of Latin dance music, wow do these Argentines know how to party to the wee hours. It is a balmy 2degrees, we all sleep in long johns and toques! We had ... read more
