Guess where I am? Ushuaia in Argentina. Literally at the arse of the world. And it feels like it as well. But it is a wonderful feeling to be here and experience life at this remote place. But let’s start where I finished off with my last blog entry…….. The last night I was in Punta Arenas the guys and gals I have met there organised a sort of fare well party for me and a welcome party for a Mexican guy that moved into the house. In the typical Chilean way the people did arrive about 10 pm and dinner was prepared and cooked to finally we ate at around 12.30 am. Good that Sebastian and I had an early snack around 8 pm so we didn’t feel so hungry. But it was a fun ... read more

Rough, rugged and remote Ushuaia sits on the tip of the island of Tierra del Fuego and was full of adventure. I hiked up to the glacier that backs the town, getting stuck in deep snow, and then got lost in the national park as the sun was fading. In the late April off-season, there was no one around--I had to rescue myself. Even more intense, I learned that the indigenous Yamana who lived in this sub-zero icebox wore no clothes because the constant rain and snow would have soaked them--yikes. A land of extremes. Extremes indeed, as Ushuaia was the southern end of the Andes/Rocky Mountain chain and of the Pan-American highway, both of which begin in Alaska. It's the southern-most city in the Americas, sitting on the Isla Grande, the Big Island of the ... read more

Geo: -54.8, -68.3This morning we awoke as we were cruising along an area known as Glacier Alley. We went out onto deck to get a glimpse of the snow- capped mountains coming down to the sea. We also saw one or two glaciers along the way. We actually sailed past Ushuaia and viewed it from afar before turning back to enter the channel leading to our docking space. It was very windy and it took quite a deal of manoeuvring to line up on the pier and dock safely. It was a beautiful sunny day and we watched some of the procedures from our lunch table and the rest from the deck. At 2-15pm we went down to the Mondrian Lounge to await our tour. This was the first on shore tour we had booked and ... read more

We headed to Ushuaia, the most Southey City in the World, as we wanted to book a trip to Antarctica so we spent our first day checking out what was available, unfortunately everything was extremly expensive so we made the difficult decision to NOT go. Once this decision was made we were able to start looking forward & planning our next few days & weeks. Our first day in Ushuaia was cold & raining, the next day the weather improved so we hiked to Moreno Glacier, we took a taxi to the bottom of the chairlift & then hiked from there (3km up and 10km back). It was a pretty area with little streams & as we got higher we had fantastic views back over Ushuaia. We had a great day hiking in Tierra del Fuego ... read more

DAY 7 Just caught the end of an unbelievable sunrise! No time to take a photo so hopefully will repeat tomorrow. This morning we cruised by catamaran along the Beagle Channel dotted with many rocky island outcrops each supporting a huge range of wildlife. The trip was incredibly scenic & the weather very kind (sunny patches, about 14 deg., and a very slight tail wind. Our first stop was a safe haven for hundreds of resting cormorants and other seabirds. Next stop was a fur seal colony and finally a penguin island (magellanic & gantoo) and quite incredibly 2 king emperor penguins which are way outside their normal Antarctic environment. We cruised on to the Harberton Estancia (ranch) formally a famous working ranch in an area originally settled by Welsh sheep farmers. The farm is now ... read more

Just a few short hours before we set sail. The good news is the weather looks like it's set fair so I am hopeful of a smooth crossing. Attached are few photos of my final day´s walking around Ushuaia - Laguna Esmeralda - beautiful but cold. I walked with a retired police officer and his wife (a fitness instructor) from Guildford - both charming. Travel makes for strange bedfellows! And so to Antarctica...and something about my state of mind... "We find after years of struggle that we do not take trips. A trip takes us." (John Steinbeck) "For scientific leadership give me Scott, for swift and efficient travel give me Amundsen. But when you are in a hopeless situation, when you are seeing no way out, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton" (Sir ... read more

DAY 6 DAY 6 Today we flew to Ushuaia the most southerly town in Argentina at 55 degrees south. Forecast to be cooler than the last few days at 15c but not bad with sunny breaks between the cloud and wind less than expected. First impressions "Ushuaia is not the prettiest town I have seen" due to rapid growth subsidised by the govt but without any extra infrastructure finance or much planning. That said it is surrounded by magnificent views of the snow caped Andes to the west, Tierra del Fuego to the south and the pristine waters of the Beagle Channel, named after the ship in which Charles Darwin sailed in 1832 and led to his now famous theories. No formal activities this afternoon and we wandered along the two main streets of the town ... read more

I have been in Ushuaia 5 days. The overwhelming feeling (and one that is yet to wear off is that you are at the very tip of the Americas) with only a relatively thin strip of ocean between you and Antarctica. Ushuaia is not a beautiful town but it is a town in a beautiful location. It feels part port and part ski resort. As you might expect from a town that is built at the foot of a mountain everything exists on an angle, making it something of a challenge to get down into town and a major expedition to get back up again. I get the impression that as a natural staging post for trips to Antarctica it doesn't have to try too hard and as a result has not had to develop its ... read more

....And she´s off! From the Blizzard-ridden icey grips of the Canadian Sub-Arctic, Theresa makes the intentional journey to get to where Dave is. At the ends of the earth on the opposite pole, that is. Just when I am ready with plane ticket in hand, to leave Churchill, Manitoba, to catch my Argentinian flights from Winnipeg, a 3 day blizzard warning is in effect. So, waying my odds, I went for the 45 hour train ride from Churchill to Winnipeg as opposed to cancelled flight after cancelled flight from Churchill´s icey, blizzardy climate. Then I hopped on the flight path of 3 flights, 40 hours in total in planes and airports, and finally, I am at el Fin del Mundo, Ushuaia, Argentina. Finalemente! (finally!). I have been welcomed with the Argentinian peso´s de-valuing, so our exchange ... read more
