This blog with more photos is available on my website . Say Hueque organized my tours in Ushuaia and did a fantastic job of finding the most environmentally responsible local tour operators. I highly recommend them for sustainable travel in both Argentine and Chilean Patagonia! I spent three weeks in Ushuaia and got to do just about everything! Here are my favorite hikes and places to get outside and enjoy the spectacular nature that Tierra del Fuego has to offer! Alarkén Nature Reserve The easiest hikes with fantastic views leave from Arakur Resort. There are three trails, all clearly marked and easy to follow. They are public trails on the Cerro Alarkén Nature Reserve that you can... read more

Most of our passage from Punta Arenas, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina through the Cockburn and Beagle Channels was made under the cover of darkness. The Beagle Channel was named after the ship that carried English naturalist, Charles Darwin around the world. Most of the shore excursions include a disclaimer that bad weather is not cause for a refund, so I held out for a weather forecast before I spent $164.95 on the shore excursion, “The Train to the End of the World.” By the time I was ready to commit, however, the tour was sold out. I initially asked to be placed on the waiting list, but, as the time drew nearer, I requested to be removed from the waiting list and purchased the shore excursion, “Lake Escondido Scenic Alpine Drive.” Since I have been mystified ... read more

Things maybe didn’t start as we had hoped, with our airport transfer doing a total no-show. The streets were deathly quiet after celebrations the previous evening (apparently?! We were fast asleep). But we managed to get a couple of Ubers without drama and made it to the airport in plenty of time. The travelling process was unremarkable save for the pitiful amount of food provided by Aerolineas and Eloise’s bag again distancing itself from the others. Arrived and checked in to our hotel, and decided to face the Covid music and get our tests done. Alas our intestinal fortitude was thwarted by the New Year’s holiday and we were told to come back tomorrow. A bit of a wander around, with the main focus being staving off death by starvation. Some very average pizzas filled a ... read more

On Friday we had a free day in Buenos Aires. I had one mission in mind, to head to La Boca to buy some shoes. My all time favourite shoes were bought there 8 years ago and I have had them repaired and they are still going strong. Before that we went out about 9am and walked along the riverbank. We spotted the Casa Rosada in the distance. It was a pleasant sunny morning and the restaurants were being prepared for the lunchtime opening. We returned to the hotel where wet had to have an information session and a Covid test. The venue for the information was changed without anyone telling us but we found it with the help of one of the managers. On the 5th floor we gathered and Lola the guide told us ... read more

I was asked the other day about the most remote places I have been. Unfortunately, this person was unaware of two of the three places I mentioned. The obvious one, the Great Barrier Reef, where we motored 65km off the coast of Port Douglas in Queensland, Australia. Other than Hawaii, it was probably the first time I was surrounded by water. In fact, I was IN the water!!! And there was no land in sight, in any direction! But the other two were probably equally remote, and perhaps more interesting. One was Torres del Paine in Patagonia. Hopefully, you saw the special on Patagonia on CNN last week. It is a beautiful and unspoiled part of the world. Mr. Mike and I were driving around, lost in the total darkness. A good Samaritan came along and ... read more

From 24/7 Wall Street: The continent closest to Antarctica is South America, particularly at its southern tip which includes parts of Argentina and Chile. These areas, southwest of the Falkland Islands, have little population. Argentina and Chile have vied to be home to the southernmost city in the world. Recently, Chile took the lead as it named Puerto Williams as a city. Previously, Ushuaia in Argentina held the spot as the southernmost city on Earth. Chile did not exactly cheat, but Puerto Williams was not called a city before May 2019. Puerto Williams started as a town in 1953 and became a base for the Chilean Navy. Over time, it has become a tourist destination, and home to scientific communities because of its proximity to Antarctica. For the most part, Puerto Williams posts ... read more
