In total we spent about 5 days in Buenos Aires, not enough time but we got to see a few of the places around the city. We went to Recoleta and visited the massive graveyard there. It is were Eva Peron and bunch of other ridiculously rich people are buried. The graves are mad, its like a town. After that we ventured to the Zoo... one of the worst zoos ever. There were enclosures that didn´t have animals in them anymore and the animals that were still alive were either manky looking or pacing up and down their enclosures. Still I got to see a puma and jaguar so I was happy. Some of the other areas we checked out were Puerto Maderom and La Boca (home to Boca Junoirs). We missed their last game of ... read more

Arrived late afternoon in the third largest city in Argentina, about a million people, for the statistics buffs out there. Managed to negotiate the purchase of a local bus pass, bit like an Oyster card, and can recommend the tourist office at the bus terminal, give out a good map of the city and lots of advice - probably even more useful if you can really speak Spanish. A quick bus trip into the city centre following the bus line on the map meant we managed to find our hotel without any wrong turns. Bumped into some other English people trying to get a room - hope they found one as they were the only other gringos we saw in the city. After dropping off the bags we headed off to have a look round the ... read more

Unfortunately we´re having lots trouble with our camera at the moment, and without being able to transfer our photos to a computer, haven´t been blogging. We only had one photo for this location, though, so you´re not missing much! That photo and more to come when we reach a country where we can either speak the language in order to get the camera fixed or buy a new one for less than twice the price they cost at home (electrical goods are an absolute fortune here). After spending 5 nights in Uruguay (as I´ve said, a country that´s famous for its beaches) in some of the greyest, wettest weather you´d find outside of summer in Northern Ireland, we woke up on our last morning to glorious sunshine. Not the best day to pick to spend 12 ... read more

Rosario is fairly close to Buenos Aires, 3 hours by bus so after staying only one night in BA we got the morning bus and planned to stay there for 3-4 nights before returning back to BA where we left are main bags so we could travel nice and light. One of the main reasons for coming here was because the Lonely planet described it as "one of the most perfect cities and we should all be there now!" So with that advice we had to see what all the fuss was about. The bus journey was nice and easy and we managed to find our hostel with no problems and decided to explore the city. The weather was glorious and it was nice walking down the water front but saw nothing too outstanding. We then ... read more

Last weekend we hopped on the bus and crossed the Rio Parana into the province of Santa Fe to get a glimpse of the gaucho life on an estancia called Entre Rios. It was a nice breath of fresh air to get out of the city and see some of the countryside. They fed us a huge asado BBQ lunch, with about three different entrees of meat and a couple vegetables and lots of bread, followed by three very sweet desserts. We even got to see some traditional folk dancing and did a little horseback riding, (on some very tame old horses) but nevertheless it was a much needed change of pace from the craziness that is Rosario. For the past several days, there has been a growing manifestacion of the local indigenous population in ... read more

Yesterday it snowed in Argentina. The first time Buenos Aires has seen snow since 1918. Rosario hasn´t had snow since the 70s. It is cold. I had to buy a jacket, some gloves, and just picked up some long johns because jeans are not doing the trick. We´ve just begun our third week of classes at the Universidad Nacional de Rosario and are adjusting to life in Rosario. We live in a very nice home about 10 blocks from the small school and have begun taking the bus in the mornings because it is hard to get out of bed on time when it´s still dark and freezing outside. The first week here we were living with Graciela Romero, a very sweet lady who had to go to Spain to take care of her son ... read more

Narelle made me write this,... Well we were here only 2 days but in that time we became quite intimate with this tiny northen town of 30,000.. It consists of the usual small one way streets, as all towns in Argentina seem to have, but not the usual dog poo everywhere .. this is a town that appears to have nothing happening, oh, but it does... you just have to wait until the weekend. At the end of town, where the river meets the land, it unfolds. On the weekend we arrived some big named singer greeted an enormous audiance as part if the 50 yr celebration for the monument de bandera.... a sun filled day by the river with some traditional music. Although not a word was understood ,the vibe was a warm one. ... read more

A 4 hour bus journey from BA and we arrive in the little city of Rosario, the place where Che Guevara was born! We arrive in our little hostel with a reggae bar attached to it and head out to find somewhere to eat! We find a nice little pizza place and end up making a sharp exit once we´ve paid the bill! The thing is when we got a taxi back to our hostel in BA on our last night, the driver cunningly swapped our 50 peso note with a fake one and try as we might we just couldn´t get rid of it! So our only option was to leave it as payment in a restaurant and make a hasty retreat - so thats just what we did!! Next day we spend the map ... read more

Admitedly i love chaos. Its not that i encorage anarchy or anything its just that when the tablecloth trips, the curtain rod colapes, the books fall, and the trolley flies down the hill, i´m standing in the middle screaming sugar honey ice tea (we have underage readers on this site). Which is probably why i feel happy in my new host family. We are, well huge. I live a crumbling, giant old house in the center of town, across the road is a flamico dance school (shame its not tango), and a pizza shop which is mades for an excellent sensual experience standing on the balcony every night. I share a room with my two host sisters, we wear each others clothes as we can´t locate our own, and i tend to be dressed by ... read more
