Während Puerto Natales nur us Wällblächhüser bestoht, isch El Calafate ... read more

English Here we are again! Hello to everybody! We thank you all for still following us with this blog. It is really nice to see that people are interested (we hope it's not only for the mate competition going on ;)). Thanks for all the comments, they are always very welcome and they make us feel more in contact with you from this far continent! After the last time we moved to Argentina (yesss... we missed the asado!), but we didn't move from Patagonia, which is really huge. We realised indeed how incredibly big this country is... after 2 whole days of bus trip through the pebbled ruta 40, we arrived with the clothes full of dust to Bariloche, still very much in the south... We have not updated this website for quite 2 weeks, so ... read more

People go to El Calafate to see the big glaciers- Perrito Moreno, etc. I enjoyed the town (great food!), a good trek up a mountain one evening followed by a rustically elegant barbque, and glacier watching all equally. We had a blast doing the trek, as we had a fun guide and met two silly British girls and a dog named Garcia. The girls joined us at the bar later and again for dinner the next night. They left for a cruise to Antarctica today from Ushuaia (in Tierra del Fuego), for 13 days! They are traveling for an entire year and I got the travel blog web site from them. A group of guys followed us around town one night and one thought his English would impress us into joining them. As all he could ... read more

Hola I´m glad Januarys over, those dark, dreary nights! Only Kidding! Have had the best January, sorry to see it go.... Again, we have been inspired by the spectacular feats of nature. Perito Moreno Glacier, the biggest glacier I have ever seen. And we have had loads of fun too. Things we have done in El Calafate 1. Seen the Glacier We saw it from loads of different directions. The best being on a boat where we got so close. Huge chunks of ice kept breaking off too - lucky for us.. we were able to enjoy a stiff drink over glacial ice! 2. Went trekking up Cerro Frio 1000 metres high, with stunning views of the lake. Was a great trek with 2 girls from San Fran, who were very fast! Taught us loads about ... read more

"I have the feeling that Patagonia is the most desolate of places...a land of exiles, a place of de-territoriality" (Jean Baudrillard) was right. El Calafate is now the worst type of tourist trap. But it wasn't always that way. Mass tourism in Patagonia is a recent thing. Once upon a time it was very different. The old Patagonian Wild West was a land of Pirates, outlaws and rebels. (Maybe its their pirate past that explains the desire to empty the tourists wallets!) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were the most famous of the outlaws who made Patagonia their home. When things were getting too hot for Cassidy and Sundance they settled down for 5 years as respectable stock farmers. The neighbours had no idea that the polite gringos were criminals. But the rural retirement couldn't ... read more

James and I are back safe and sound from our second major attempt at trekking in Patagonia. Again it was very succesful and we got to enjoy some top views along the way. The terrain was easier than last time with much less climbing to be done, but the notoriously fickle Patagonian weather made sure that the trek was never easy, with lashings of wind and rain to keep us on our toes!! A quick summary and some piccies follows: Day 1 - I hadn´t been feeling all that well in the run up to this trek so I found the quite gentle first day´s walk to Laguna Torre quite tough and was glad to reach camp. One thing I hadn´t mentioned about the previous trek - possibly because I had attempted to blank the painful ... read more

Hiya, I am having a grand ol' adventure here in Patagonia. The trip has got off to a great start. I left Ushiaia (Cape Horn) two days ago, and am now further North at El Calafate. Its higher up in the Andes and has some amazing glaciers cracking into huge mountain lakes. Will forward photos. This afternoon I tour the most infamous ´Peurto Moreno'´ Glacier. - 60 meters. I'm in a hostel for these 3 days, and it feels good not having to carry my larger rug-sack every day... phew! It took 30 hours Door-2-Door to get to Cape Horn. I was hoping to check out a trip to Antarctica, but the 8 days required exceeds my stay in Patagonia. It would have been deadly to make the trip all six continents. Meeting lots people, ... read more

The main (only) reason for visiting El Calafate is to take a trip to the incredible Perito Moreno Glaciar. Unfortunately, the glacier is located 75km away from the town and no public transport runs out to it!! Therefore you need to book on a quite expensive tour, or use your wits to get there. Fortunately, as James and I don´t have much in either of those two departments, we found secret third option C, which was to bump into some Israeli guys that I had met in Buenos Aires and for them to have 2 free spaces in the car that they had rented for the following day - resulto!! Thus we drove down to the Glaciar the next morning. About three quarters of the way to the glaciar, the road turned to winding gravel, and ... read more
