As we are now so close to the end, we´ve been rushing about like mad things in Brazil for carnaval and now in Salta for wine/food, so the blogs are a bit delayed. As a result I cant remember much about this bit so I’ll bluff it quickly and we’ll move onto the Brazil one...! Left Punta Arenas amid a hearty final booze up and fancy dress party with the other volunteers, and went to Puerto Natales. Here we had dinner in restaurant overdecorated in Beatles mania and then went to bed. During the night the wind huffed and puffed so much I thought that the house would... well you know. Got bus to el calafate, crossing from Chile to Argentina once more. Stayed at hostel del glaciar libertador. New double room with bathroom but still ... read more

I have backdated this entry and it will speed through several locales with the most important being Mount Fitzroy located in El Chalten, Argentina. This is Sara by the way. We last left you at the Torres del Paine in Chile following an expensive lunch and a dusty bus ride. We then spent two nights in Peurto Natales eating wonderful vegetarian food, getting our laundry done, and doing some serious R & R following our tough trek. Our hostel was wonderful, with a great breakfast and the manager was extremely helpful and nice. We left on Peurto Natales on February 14 for Calafate, another touristy town but this time in Argentina. We were worried that our food would get confisgated in Argentina if we had anything fresh since the border crossing to Chile had been so ... read more

Whew...I am so far behind I don´t know if I´ll ever catch up, but I´ll try in the next few days. In reality, it is the 19th of Feb, and I´m in Tucuman, writing a little after a post birthday asado nap, and before going out for a little walk and coffee. These are pictures of Lago Argentino which you can see from El Calafate, a day trip we made to the Upsala glaciar and Estancia Christina, some pictures from some hills outside town called Cerro Frias, and the town of El Calafate itself. Again, just too beautiful for words. The Upsala and Estancia Christina photos are all from one long day trip we took the day after we went to Perrito Moreno glaciar. We got up early, were taken by mini bus to a large ... read more

Oh, boy…late again. Sorry for the slow updates folks, but I do have a couple of excuses. First, Villa la Angostura is so beautiful it´s hard to drag myself inside to sit in front of the computer. Our hostería sits right on the edge of lake Nahual Huapi which is surrounded by snow capped mountains. In fact, we basically haven´t been able to drag ourselves away from the hostería. All the excursions I had planned to San Martin de los Andes and other scenic towns in the area have basically been abandoned because it´s just too beautiful here. A bit like a high lake in the Rockies in Colorado, and the town of Villa la Angostura is pretty much a resort/ski town, but in a good kind of way. Or maybe kitsch just seems better in ... read more

D Hälfti vo de ... read more

"Then they climbed back on their mounts and hurried to reach a village before dark, but the sun set, long with the hope of acheiving their desire, when they were near the huts of some goatherds, and so they decided to spend the night there; as much as it grieved Sancho not to be in a town, it pleased his master to sleep outdoors, for it seemed to him that each time this occured it was another act of certification that helped to prove his claim to knighthood." (Don Quixote First part, Chapter X) The above quote seems to sum up quite nicely my 4 day trip from Rio Gallegos to El Calafate. Riding north west into the wind was an extremely beautiful ride but tough going in places. The long spaces between, campgrounds, farms, service ... read more
