Well we arrived in El Calafate (for the second time) and have taken up residence at a rather plush hotel. We arrived here after our Mount Fitzroy expedition and were all delighted to slide into a comfortable beds after steak and wine of course. Today we visited the glacier.... see pictures. Not a heck of a lot more to report, then again I do not feel inspired at the moment and this keyboard sucks!!! Tommorow we leave for Chile!... read more

Day 11 - After three good days in Puerto Madryn we head further south to El Calafate - an even smaller town which is close to Ushuia (the southern most town on earth and step off point to Antartica). The bus journey takes 24 hours but isn´t too bad apart from one girl that smelt of sick and one boy that smelt of wee. A suprisingly delicious aroma, I hasten to add. The landscape changes dramatically as we near our destination. The vast expanse of blank terrain is replaced by sweeping hills and lakes, all surrounded by snow capped moutains in the distance. When we arrive in the town we check into an amazing hostel which is built on a hill, giving it panoramic views of not only the town itself but the turquoise lake lying ... read more

Well, after leaving Dawson Gav in Buenos Aires we boarded a 36 bus hour ride south to Rio Gallegos. This was the first time I spent two nights, and an entire day on one bus. Thankfully Jord and I got seats just behind the staircase so we could stretch out our legs. Poor Ryan had to sit beside a stranger for most of the way having to constantly jostle with him for space. Horrible food, dubbed movies, stenches from caged humans (well seated ones anyway) and spurts of unbearable heat made the ride hardly bearable. I haven´t calculated the distance I have travelled since March 11th, but March 10th was the last day I slept in a bed (until last night -and it was beautiful). The amount of travelling I have done since February started would ... read more

After a 5 hour bus ride, a short hop when taken in context of other bus journeys, we arrived into El Calafate, the newest town in Argentina. It's a frontier town at the foot of some spectacular mountains. Not that we could see any of them. Low clouds were blanketing out all but the closest hills and even they were partially obscured. The weather is peculiar in Patagonia. Different areas have their own microclimate so it’s impossible to predict what the weather will be like in any one place. I’d heard from other travelers that the weather had been atrocious here. They’d hiked for days in endless rain, buffeting winds and freezing cold. And after enduring all this they didn’t even see the mountains that brought them there in the first place. On hearing those stories ... read more

As I stared out the window there appeared an aqua-marine lake in the barren, hostile looking plains. This signified our approach to El Calafate airport. The drop in temperature was significant. No more walking around in a t-shirt and shorts, we were now in Patagonia. The landscape looked as wild and amazing as in the numerous photos I´d seen. I was so excited to be here. The pilot mentioned something about how we had arrived at a very special time which had something to do with the Perito Moreno Glacier. We just thought it was the usual tourist speil but found out later that the ice bridge connecting Perito Moreno Galcier to the penninsula was about to collapse. Apparently it is a major event that happens only infrequently. To understand how major an event this is ... read more

Yet more news since last time - we are engaged! We´ve spent the last week or so in the mountains around El Chalten (Fitzroy range) mostly camping and trekking. Ben and Subhani have headed on to the rest of their travels after Ben joined us for the first day of trekking (Subhani quite sensibly staying indoors in the horrendous weather!) though we are planning to meet up again in the Argentinian lake district for a drink or two before they head to Chile and Bolivia. We havn't yet managed to get out of bed before 10am without Ben there to get us organised in the mornings! The first couple of days were pretty bad weather wise with incredible winds and a fair amount of rain, howether things eventually picked up and we trekked to a fantastic ... read more
