Carnaval? In Argentina? Yes. Apparently, there is a big carnaval just 3 hours from Buenos Aires, every week during Januaray, February and March. Anyway I went to this carnaval with a tour, so we got to sit in the first row of the VIP section, and see everything real close. It was great - lots of music and little clothing. The carnaval has 3 groups, each appears for about an hour and a half, so it lasts until 3 am, after which we came back to Buenos Aires. Before this carnaval, I also went to a body exhibition in Buenos Aires. In the middle of a big mall, they have an exhibition of real bodies, where they show things like the nervous system, the muscles, and all other parts of the body. It was pretty interesting, ... read more

Río Uruguay and Naty´s Home Town! I traveled this weekend with my host parents to Natalia´s home town! It’s this charming little town on the edge of Río Uruguay. It’s extremely peaceful and everyone sits outside at night and greets each other on the street. There are a million tracks and other places to run around the city including the Defensa (a big boardwalk that ends in a lighthouse). There are also a million gyms and sports clubs for soccer, basketball, hockey and tennis throughout the city. It seems that everyone in this little town is an athlete! Streets are lined with beautiful teracotta roof houses and open backyard gardens. The city center is lined with California style clothing stores and ice cream shops (Dany´s is the most amazing ice cream I have ever had!!) Many ... read more

Elaborate costumes. Sensual dancing. Colorful floats. Exuberent music. Body glitter. Plastic breasts covered with bejewelled pasties. Carnaval. The biggest, craziest celebration in South America. We had arrived. Everyone knows about Brazil's famous Carnaval celebrations, but most people probably don't know that pretty much every country in Latin America has their own unique way of celebrating. Since these are all officially Catholic countries, they use this opportunity to go wild before Lent and its fasting begins. While Brazil's celebrations may be the most elaborate, it is also extremely expensive to attend and isn't necessarily the safest environment. We decided to experience Carnaval Argentina-style. We had flown back to BsAs from Patagonia to take care of some business (obtaining our Brazilian visas, changing our plane tickets, etc.) and bid farewell to our friend... read more

We left Puerto Iguazu on the Expreso Singer overnight bus, leaving about 90 minutes late. Explanation was that the guys had been fixing the air conditioning - so probably worth the wait given the temperatures here. A fairly uneventful 14 hours later with decent amounts of sleep, particularly after the blankets were given out, we found ourselves at the roadside outside Concepcion del Uruguay. Not quite sure which direction to head in but a minute later the local gendarmes wandered across the road to ask us where we had come from, and where we were going. Having established that we did not want to walk into town, next thing we knew the policeman was on his radio getting a cab to take us the 7km into town. The taxi driver then gave us a running commentary ... read more

...becaue it' really hot! I finally made it to Argentina. Some unforseen circumstances put off the trip for a year, but I'm here, and I'm spending Christmas sweating my brains out. And having a blast. I won't be going anywhere for Christmas (no money) but my friend Juan has invited me to stay with him and his family for Christmas, and my other friend Daniel invited me to his aunt and uncle's house in Buenos Aires for New Year's. Just finished my laundry today. That's the cool thing about the ACA program, is that you actually get to live the experience, not just travel. Traveling is awesome, but becoming a part of the people is an uncomparable experience.... read more

Howdy Ya´ll Got a couple photos - although not many. I keep forgetting to take my camera out. Hmmmm Anyway - friday night I went to my first club night in buenos aires - what a blast! There were two floors, the top floor was all progressive house, pretty decent people. I met one guy there who I can potentially play soccer with, which would be great. Gotta show those dirty argo´s how to actually play... The downstairs room was mainly uplifting trance, banging techno and UK hard dance - more my style! Very melodic and I enjoyed it alot! The only problem is it was VERY expensive. Everything in Argentina is about a third the price of Australia (besides electronics and apparently, clubbing) I was charged 30 pesos for entry - which is about $11 ... read more

Hey all: Well, I managed to get two hours out of Uruguay, and then I couldn´t get any farther so I´m stuck again. I have a bus scheduled for tonight so be moving farther along later... but I´m inching myself toward the falls. These better be the best falls in the world (well at least they are supposed to be some of them). If I can, once I reach santa fe tonight, I´m going to jump directly on another bus and go to posados... then its only five more hours by bus to the falls! But all of this... this is another 23 hours of bussing. That´s a lot land. Well, at least this is one way to appreciate the vastness of Argentina, or of any country. I´m in this tiny town of colon, or entre ... read more

Gualeguaychu!

English summary: We fled out of Brasil just before carnaval. To get a bit of the atmosphere we went to the best carnaval Argentina: the carnaval en el corsodromo de Gualeguaychu. Some 6 carnavl groups prepare the whole year for this show. It was very nice and the atmosphere was good too.

The sun is setting outside, the receptionists have joined with the regulars in sing alongs and drinks, and I am faced with the sad task of packing up all my things into my pack once again and pulling myself together for a late night ride to the Airport, because tomorrow morning I take-off for Ecuador. I have relaxed all this week and hung out with my friends here at the hostel, watching films, going for walks, singing along to the guitar, and making mistaken laden conversation in spanish. I have really felt comfortable here at the hostel clan with familiar faces and everybody knows my name. It sounds like Cheers and in truth it really is. We said goodbye to one off the longest serving receptionists last week, who has flown off to Ireland now to ... read more
