Our nearest and dearest, who may have become encouraged at the news of us booking ahead and the prospect of us becoming a more planful pair, will be disappointed. Our forward planning has got us into a bit of a pickle. We have tickets for specific seats, on a specific bus, scheduled to depart on a specific date......and the bus has been cancelled. Snow has blocked the main road south. We´re told to try tomorrow, but are worried that even if tomorrow´s bus is running, we won´t be guaranteed seats, so we insist on being issued new tickets with dedicated seat numbers. The extra day does at least mean to get to visit the whales again (and gives the camera another battery-sapping outing). We´re joined by two others from the hostel, so share a taxi to ... read more

We swot up on the differences between seals and sea-lions at the local ecocentre, in readiness for our sea-kayak trip. We´re picked up from our hostel by our guide, Juani, and are pleased to discover that we´re his only passengers. Our kayaks are not among the five vessels officially permitted to take tourists whale-watching, so we duly make our promises to Juani that, should we come across said mammals, we will close our eyes and start paddling in the other direction... It´s a 15km drive on gravel roads to the launch point - a deserted beach. The sun is not long up and the sea is perfectly still. We´re excited to be in the great outdoors again after almost two weeks of city life and are looking forward to our adventure. We get kitted up, and ... read more

We have a chilled few nights on the coast - enjoying walks on the beach and fresh sea food. We occasionally spot pods of whales as we walk, flashing their fins at us from various points along the cove. But we know this is only an appetizer for the excursions to come, which will take us up close and personal to the wildlife. The hostel is quiet. There´s an old guitar lying about and Iv has a jam with Harri - a Dominanc Republic author here to promote his book - and a second Gaston who works the the late shift at the hostel (we were beginning to wonder whether the hostel had highly discrimanatory employment practices, but this is disproved when we met Virginia, who covers the morning shift). Gaston cooks a prawn feast for ... read more

Buses are the most pòpular way to travel in South America. Flights are expensive and in shorter supply. Bus travel follows an airline model - understandable given the distances. There´s first class and economy, they serve drinks and meals, and they show films. Our first trip is a twenty hour job to Patagonia, which leaves BA at 9pm. Even economy class has pretty good reclining loungers, and we cwtch up and soon fall asleep (despite the B-rate movie flashing over the TV screens). As dawn breaks we are exposed to a transformed landscape - mile upon mile of flat, barren semi-desert scrubland. If we strain our eyes we can spot amongst the low lying scrub a few cattle or horses. The farms out here are vast - averaging 7,000 to 10,000 hectares. It must be a ... read more

There is a pretty good argument that mountains, gorges and rivers have it easy in the scenic stakes. They just have to be. Even deserts have the chance to stack up fairly well – although, as far as I know, there are no actual deserts in Patagonia. But flat, brown expanses of plains covered with short shrubs have a very tough time of it. For a region that includes Torres del Paine, the Lakes District , the Perito Moreno, Upsalla and Spegazzini Glaciers as well as part of the Andes, it is probably unfair to take away an overall impression of Patagonia being flat and uniformly brown. But that is what most of it is. And, for me, it's up there with the most beautiful parts of the world. Flat, brown lands do need be something ... read more

Yesterday was our "chill" day - we got up late, when it was cloudy and set off to bus station to book our next trip (more later) by the time we'd got back down to the harbour, the sun was out so we decided to walk along the beach. We found a restaurant right on the beach and had lunch (chips and beer!) and as we came out we bumped into Ken and Andy (the American couple from the wildlife trip yesterday!) we walked along beach with them to the Eco centre (which we knew was closed for May) and then left them there and headed back. Today we got up about 8am and after breakfast headed off to explore the Welsh settlements......sadly it was one of the first disappointing days!! We got on the bus ... read more

We visited El Condor from Viedma - home to the largest colony of parrots in the world - what a find! (everything in the town was closed for winter and we had 3 hours to kill before the bus back to Viedma!) thank goodness for the parrots!! We embarked on our next part of the journey South on Tuesday. The coach was an hour late but nobody seemed concerned about it! We were on the top deck this time with only half reclining seats - thought we could watch the scenery but for most of the journey it was just a straight road, across boring, flat, arid landscape! Mind you, it helped that I'd taken a Nytol instead of a Kwell and dozed for most of the journey!! We were met by staff from the Hostel ... read more

So we finally made it to Patagonia after a whirlwind 7 nights in BA. It was a mission to get there let me tell you, we trotted off to the airport in BA all ready for our week long adventure only to find that our flight had been cancelled and the entire airport shutdown, not to mention all other airports in BA closed. Not happy jan!! We had no accomodation booked and found that all the hostels we wanted to sleep at were booked out so we had to stay at the most dosgy hostel you could imagine in BA by the name of Tango. The door knob fell off, Gav almost cut his face open with a low flying fan and the entire hostel were stonned and morbid and listened to death metal and didnt ... read more

Yesterday I spent most of the day emailing and organising my PhD. I'll make it short: I'm going to Tübingen for my PhD and I'll start around mid-June. Though, everybody, I'm back on the 24th of May -> let's meet then! And of course you're welcome to visit me in Germany, it's not that far from the border. After sitting in front of the computer most of the time, I enjoyed again the nice beach, the 29 degrees aire temperature, as well as the 16 degrees water temperature...(Argentinians think I'm crazy). Next stop is Viedma, well, actually, Carmen de Patagones. Bus's leaving at 2 pm and it's a short trip of about 6h. Btw: comments still welcome ;) I'd actually like to know who's reading my blog...!... read more
