Yesterday was our "chill" day - we got up late, when it was cloudy and set off to bus station to book our next trip (more later) by the time we'd got back down to the harbour, the sun was out so we decided to walk along the beach. We found a restaurant right on the beach and had lunch (chips and beer!) and as we came out we bumped into Ken and Andy (the American couple from the wildlife trip yesterday!) we walked along beach with them to the Eco centre (which we knew was closed for May) and then left them there and headed back.

Today we got up about 8am and after breakfast headed off to explore the Welsh settlements......sadly it was one of the first disappointing days!!

We got on the bus to Trelew (an hour, £2 each) and then got another bus to Gaimen (another 20 mins on the bus). We nearly missed Gaimen - had to ask the driver to stop after we realised we'd missed the main high street!

Few welsh signs and reference to Evans (my mum's maiden name) so that was good. We then saw a sign to the famous Gaimen tea rooms, which we started following........took us through a housing estate, and then an industrial estate.....finally got to a lovely house by the river advertising Welsh teas (with "torta negra" which is clearly barabrith!) only problem was that it didn't open until 2pm and it was only 12!! So we walked back to bus and headed back to Trelew.

ok, some history..........

in the 1830's and 40's a lot of Welsh people went to USA but not in any organised fashion. A group of them living in San Francisco decided to head off to either Australia and Patagonia. They decided on the later but first went back to Wales to tell everyone of this great place with arable land to farm. They set off in a ship called Mimosa (a tea clipper built in Aberdeen that was used to running tea from China). They landed in Puerto Madryn 28 July 1865 to find totally unfarmable land and an inhospitable climate (like we've been looking out on for the last few days!). However, they settled in Puerto Madryn and spread out South and South West to Trelew and Gaimen

Needless to say, G has helped to remind me of some of the facts.......

We went back to Trelew and wandered round a little museum but other than that, we were disappointed and didn't find another tea room so came home!!!

G has found a pub that has wi fi for him to watch the City game in tomorrow (I'll wander the shops!). We then set off at 4pm to Rio Gallegos and hopefully, if on time, swap buses to the Ushuaia bus (total of 29 hours!!!!) that will get us to the Southernmost City in the World.

More from there (if we find a hostel........)
