Yesterday was our "chill" day - we got up late, when it was cloudy and set off to bus station to book our next trip (more later) by the time we'd got back down to the harbour, the sun was out so we decided to walk along the beach. We found a restaurant right on the beach and had lunch (chips and beer!) and as we came out we bumped into Ken and Andy (the American couple from the wildlife trip yesterday!) we walked along beach with them to the Eco centre (which we knew was closed for May) and then left them there and headed back. Today we got up about 8am and after breakfast headed off to explore the Welsh settlements......sadly it was one of the first disappointing days!! We got on the bus ... read more

There´s only one month left until the end of my trip, and I got a little taster of returning home when I visited the area in Patagonia where many Welsh people settled after crossing the Atlantic in 1865. So funny! I visited a little town called Gaiman which is famous for its Tea houses. I was very intrigued by the idea of this, as I don´t really associate afternoon tea as being a particularly Welsh thing. The town was pretty dead as it is the low season for tourism in Patagonia, but it was so cute walking around the town seeing Welsh signs and flags. The afternoon tea was a great experience. Slightly pricey at around 7 pounds, but you got pots of the best tea I´ve tasted on my travels, bread and butter, cheese, scones ... read more

English version below. Do Ziemi Ognistej postanowilam sie dostac mniej interesujaca wschodnia strona Patagonii, a w drodze powrotnej na polnoc zwiedzac czesc zachodnia, andyjska. Autobusy tu sa luksusowe i doskonale przystosoane do dlugotystansowych podrozy.

Argentina is a country made up of all kinds of history and tradition. A vast majority of the current population have a long and mixed lineage dating back many generations when their ancestors migrated from Europe during the World Wars. Argentina is a melting pot alot like the US, and many people here carry on those traditions that were brought by their ancestors from Spain, Italy, Greece, etc. Another country represented in Argentina is Wales. The Welsh migration to South America was one in search of independence and prosperity. Many small towns sprang up in the counrtyside where there was plenty of room for farming. Most of these communities tried to stay completely self sufficient, providing for themselves in the way of food, building their own General Stores, creating their own laws (within reason of ... read more

Without a doubt, my main reason for wanting to travel in South America was to visit Patagonia, in search of the Welsh. My head was full of romantic notions of the heroic Welsh settlers of 1865 , crossing the Atlantic in search of a land where they could preserve their language, way of life and religion, free from persecution. We took the bus North from Rio Gallegos to Trelew, and could not help but wonder, during that 24 hours of nothingness, what possessed them to choose such a dry and barren land, so disimilar to Wales? Diolch i Dduw for the Tehuelche Indians, without whose help, those first immigrants would have starved to death. We headed straight for Gaiman, the most Welsh of the villages. On the bus we met a girl called Eirian, sporting a ... read more

Gaiman is a small town some 17 km from Trelew and famous for its Welsh tea houses. Who were we to say no? After traipsing around and seeing the Welsh chapels and the first house to be built in the town, we tried to do the cultural thing and see the museums - but they were never open. We gave up at 3.20 (they were supposed to open at 3pm and we had already wandered around since 11am) and went for our tea. Inside Ty Gwyn (White House in Welsh) it was like something straight out of the Welsh valleys. The tea was amazing with so much bread and butter, scones, and a large variety of sweet cakes. We felt really gordo afterwards!! We even heard some Welsh being spoken in the street. Even though we ... read more
