Hola and Happy New Year from the Southern Hemisphere! We are still in the UTC-3 time zone, so we even beat the East coast of the U.S. to 2013 by two hours. Docked in Puerto Madryn at 0700 this morning, but slept in and left the dock about 1000. Wow! What a beautiful little resort city, and better yet, most everything was closed for New Year’s today so it was nice and quiet. We just lazed along the beachfront all day, took some photos, had coffee and lay in the sun reading books, and snagged some cold stuff at the Farmacia. When we do the “ultimate bank robbery” this is where we will re-locate to spend our loot! Two interesting stories of note: Look at the photo of the sea lions sleeping on the baluster along ... read more

It's summer school holidays...again.... We left Bangkok at the end of the school year...direction, Buenos Aires to settle for a full year in Argentina. Leslie and Tiffany joined their new school year at the middle of the year. Top school... many new friends...morning in Castellano, afternoon in English...and two days ago, it was already the end of the official school year. There are not many expats in Argentina. There are many foreigners, but they blend as locals pretty fast. We are no expats here, neither locals...neither really forgeigners...but we moved here for a year....few months ago. This is for those who are joining the band on this entry. We moved for a year here as "perma-toursits". Problem is, none of the top schools, internationally recognized one are downtown...so we had to do our shopping around and ... read more

Arrived early in the morning at Puerto Madryn bus station and made our way to our hostel. We were greeted by the enthusiastic owner Gaston who has a mind full of local information regarding trips to see the whales, sea lions, seals and penguins. Our first outing was on bikes we also had the company of a young Englishwoman to the seal santary this was quite a hard going as most of the way was along a deep gravel road with quite a few cars zooming pass causing thick clouds of dust which we then had to cycle through. However the seals were a delight to see and watch there was even a couple of Elephant seasl in amongst them. The seals come to the beach after spending several months at sea, where they mate, the ... read more

After the big city and the sierra the adventure arrives in Patagonia. Our heroes watch whales do things that would make your granny blush, confuse a helpful museum curator with poor Welsh pronunciation and eat their own weight in cake. Yum... We awoke on the bus to the scene of, well to be frank, stark, bare, wild, off-green nothingness. As far as the eye could see. In all directions. Without any respite seemingly forthcoming. Hour followed hour, mile ran in to mile along Route 3 towards Puerto Madryn, and you could be forgiven for thinking that life had turned in to a Scooby Doo chase scene, the same background flashing by at regular intervals. The earth is a slightly off mustard colour, dry and dusty and covered in grey-green shrubs which barely rise above 50cms in ... read more

Some blogs do not need any text, and this is one of them, the pictures should be more than enough to tell the story...even with less than average pictures.... But than, it would be only half of the story and some words still need to be written. So first thing first, one more time, I would like to thank my friends Mercredes and Sergi from Koh Lipe who told me "you've got to go there!". Even with those infos, I did few mistakes...first...Puerto Madryn is not into the Peninsula Valdes, Puerto Piramides is IN the Peninsula Valdes...small issue, there is 100km between the two small cities. You can dive out of Puerto Madryn...but I did dive out of Puerto Piramides. Second fun story...Mercredes told me, you've got to dive with Captain Pinino...she is right...but after blogging, ... read more

It's already time for Tiffany and Leslie first week of school holidays in Argentina...and as the country is so impressive...we are starting slowly to push our discoveries a little further than Buenos Aires. As you are aware, I spent my last two weeks working in Africa. Leslie and Tiffany have been under the great care of Ines while I was away, and she is also joining us for our discoveries of Argentina now that I'm back "home". I have also to thank Mercredes and Sergi from Koh Lipe who introduced me few months ago to Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdes. Thanks guys, missing you! Due to the amount of pictures...and experiences we have lived over the last few days, I've decided to do two blogs, one of Puerto Madryn, and yes...one more impressive of the Peninsula ... read more

After a pleasant 20 hour bus ride (with films, food and lots of sleep!) we arrived in the quiet town of Puerto Madryn. We finally made it to our hostel, Hi Patagonia, after being harrassed by an old Spanish Lady trying to get us to stay with her. The hostel is along the main street right by the beach and an excellent ice cream shop. Hi Patagonia is probably our favourite hostel yet! Gaston, the manager, is VERY knowledgable about the whole area and couldn´t have possibly been more helpful. He sat down and helped us plan our trip around the weather, as we were there in Orca season and Orcas are more likely to be seen in the right conditions. Day 1- Gaston hires his car out daily so we rented the car for the ... read more

At about 6:30 we awoke to bitter cold. After breaking down camp, we began our walk to the bus station (probably a mile or so). Despite the freezing hands from the tent poles, I was excited to catch the 8:00 bus to Futaleufu and go rafting. At about 8:00 our dreams were shattered. The bus from Esquel only goes to Futaleufu Monday and Friday. The woman who gave us the information on taking the bus had given us a piece of paper showing the times for Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we asked her specifically about taking the bus Wednesday. I´m not sure if she made a mistake, or perhaps, since it is now off season, the Wednesday bus no longer runs. Either way, we sat at the bus station with no plan. This is a ... read more

While El Chalten was the smallest town on our trip so far (population 600ish - 2 years ago anyway), Esquel has been the town we had the smallest information on leading up to arrival. We found a map and walked towards the campsite from our book only to find it closed. Our backpacks are rather heavy and uncomfortable to be walking around everywhere, especially with upset stomachs. Disappointedly we walked back to an information building and got information on another campsite and of course it was only a few blocks from where we just were. The campground has turned out great. It is up on a hill overlooking the town and comes well equipped with showers and bathrooms. And other than the barking dogs it is quiet. This is the first place we have been where ... read more

As Sarah mentioned in the last blog, we took a 2:45 bus from El Chalten back to El Calafate. It was a double decker bus and we got the first row on the second story (floor?) so we had amazing views. At least for 5 minutes until the windows fogged up. It reminded me of riding backwards in the Volvo station wagon when I was a kid. The bus had a group of English/Americans who had trouble with their tickets. They spoke very very little Spanish and had apparently booked the wrong day for the bus so they ended up paying twice. They were quite unhappy. Lesson learned - always double check your tickets (which we knew already and have even caught a mistake on one of our own). Once back to El Calafate we passed ... read more
