Hola from Buenos Aires, Argentina! Wri kitten by Laura Fadeley-Ogle Today was our first official “work” day and what better way to start it off than with a group reflection to share with one another why we’ve all come together in this beautiful country to help make a difference. After an hour long bus journey with views ranging from the city high rise buildings to the city’s high rising slums, what an honor to have our team orientation at the National office with none ofter than Ana Cutts, the National Director. While learning about the history and culture of Argentina as well the projects, the impact and the overall view of Habitat Argentina, our team got to experience and share the National drink “Mate”. Mate is not just about sipping a drink from a straw. It’s ... read more

Our First Full day in Buenos Aires written by Emily Hudspeth We woke up this morning to a glorious day in Buenos Aires. The team arrived throughout the day yesterday, and we got to start this morning with a guided tour of the city by bus. We had a fantastic tour guide who started the tour in the center square of the city, where the "pink house" is located. Their "pink house" is the Argentinean equivalent of the United States White House - the Argentinean President lives there. Also on that square, we saw the National Congress, the autonomous Congress of Buenos Aires, the main church in Argentina, and much more. We visited inside the church and saw the monument to the liberator of their country, General San Martin. His tomb is guarded by armed guards ... read more

So today I decided I should try to change some money rather than use the atm again, after working out that the commission I paid at the airport was over £8 for a single transaction of £100. It would be the same for a smaller amount and some atms only let you take out £40 in one go. Yowzers! I was clueless as to the exchange rate on arrival so did it, or I’d have tried harder to find the cambio place. My buddy offered to show me where the local hole in the wall casa de cambio was but the blocks are all very similar and after getting a bit lost we stopped to ask a group of 3 wholesome looking men (who wouldn’t need our cash) where it was. They said it was a ... read more

Das Stadion, ... read more

Another late start, we’re getting use to South American time I think. We have an English speaking tour of Casa Rosada booked at 12:30 but left early as opposite the Casa Rosada on Plaza de Mayo is the Cabildo de Beunos Aires where meetings were held to plan revolutions. As it would have been a 50 minute walk we decided to catch a taxi and it took us a bit longer this time but finally got one to stop and then another taxi honked his horn and stopped next to ours and they had a bit of a disagreement, so to speak. As we got closer the driver then showed us google maps which indicated that many streets were closed for a festival today, so he had to take a more indirect route. I watched on ... read more

Very late start today. Didn't get out until 11 am. Walked up to the Recoleta Cemetery and started our search for Evita. She is actually entombed in her family's crypt which is Duarte. Whilst looking we enjoyed checking out the other fancy tombstones and crypts. The Duarte crypt is nothing special, just like many of the other family crypts. We ended up finding it because we noticed a queue. Afterwards I noticed that the Maps.me app which are maps you can use off-line actually had Evita's tomb marked out. We spent about 90 minutes walking around the cemetery and also visited the Basilica de Nuestra which is next door to the cemetery and its small museum. It was then a short walk to the Buenos Aires Fine Arts Museum (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes). First gallery ... read more

We ate our museli and fruit (our supermarket purchased brekky) this morning and went out the door at 9:15am. We walked up to a different bus stop which was just a little further then yesterday’s but it meant we didn’t have to go all around the eastern part of the city. We changed at the Green line which covers the Eastern part of the city around the green area of the city, that is, parks, sports facilities etc. It was 10:30 am by the time we boarded the green bus. One interesting item we passed that we’d never heard about was an amusement park dedicated to Jesus which is how the commentary described it. It has a sound and light show on the creation of life, but I don’t think it is Darwin’s version. The road ... read more

Late start today to plan our next four days in Buenos Aires. On recommendations from others we decided to do a hop-on hop-off bus and I decided to book the official Buenos Aires Bus service. There are 3 routes which are all connected at certain stops. We had a late breakfast at a chain café called Havanas which we later learnt sell very popular chocolates so I guess they are a bit like Max Brenner. Coffee was also pretty bad like at Max Brenner as well. Then just another 2 minute walk down the road to the local laundromat and left our clothes to be washed and dried, only cost about $4.50AUS. We then walked about 20 minutes to the Recoletta stop which was the closest to us. We’d bought our tickets online because it’s cheaper ... read more

Having found out at quite short notice about a work trip to Argentina, and being away on hols in Spain for a week, then teaching for a week, uncharacteristically I felt quite lethargic about doing much research. I relied on my work itinerary, reading some forum posts from colleagues and downloading Cabify onto the phone I wouldn’t be able to use out of WiFi range. Disappointingly, my phone contract didn’t include Argentina, nor could I use my data by paying £5 a day, which was really annoying. Anyway, everybody I know who has been before is very positive about it so I was sure I’d have a great time. I was booked onto BA direct from T5, excellent. I used my avios to pay for seat selection as there were 2 seats on the back row ... read more
