David here... The ferry journey from Colonia to Buenos Aires was quick, simple and comfortable. We arrived at the port and breezed through both Uruguay and Argentinian immigration. It wasn't long until we were boarding. This time not a little catamaran, but a full blown ferry capable of taking hundreds of passengers and vehicles. It did feel like every other person was a child intent on crying, whinging or sceaming, to the point that Suzanne put earplugs in. Thankfully the journey was quick, taking just over an hour, smooth and very comfortable. We picked up our bags, changed our remaining Uruguayan money for Argentinian pesos and stepped out into country number 15, and the 11th new country of the trip so far. As my husband is not keen on cities we booked this excursion with HAL expecting to see the countryside. The drive north was about an hour and quite quickly we left the city although for more than a mile we drove past the water treatment facility! Not really a fascinating site but our guide talked about it as if it was. There was a brief stop for coffee or ice cream but we did not have cash so missed the treat. On arrival at the Paraná river we joined another coach load to go aboard a river cruiser. The boat took us for an hour viewing summer homes that are only reached by boat. Our excited arrival at BA airport soon palled when standing over 2 hours in the line to reach passport control. Yes it was fun chatting to all the people around us finding out what they planned to do but after an overnight flight we were weary. Once through we got to the baggage hall to discover there was no indication of our flight on the carousels so we methodically checked all the bags that had been taken off, clearly so many flights had arrived that the hall was full. Having found them we exited to locate the Holland America transport to the ship. That was well organised and within the hour we reached the port, our bags having been taken in vans to the ship.
