Buenos Aires is a lovely city with tree lined streets and old buildings -at a glance you could be in New York, Paris or London but the best thing is everything costs a fraction of the price. We stayed at the Gran Hotel Oriental in the Congreso area - sounds a bit like the Mandarin Oriental, but at only 5 pounds a night each including breakfast, the name is where the similarity ends! The hotel was a bit strange but fine, as long as you don´t want a hot shower in the evening and you don´t mind walls that have been filled in with cement! Initially we thought our bathroom didn´t even have a shower (or a bath) but upon closer inspection it turned out the shower and the taps were just fixed on the wall ... read more

Having got settled in Buenos Aires and lost the tension brought on by such mammoth road trips, me and Rich decided to have a night on the town. Rich was looking particularly gangster in a sharp new pinstripe suit as we set forth. And what else would you go and see in this old town apart from a Tango Show! Determined to do this in style, we ordered the most expensive champagne and got the best seats in the house next to the dance floor and waited for the show to begin. By which time we were already on our third bottle of champagne ofthe night. Anyway, let me say this, it was AMAZING! a four piece band with a guy on the accordian who reminded me of Don Corleone. The sort of dude with such ... read more

On arriving in Buenos Aires we were pleasantly surprised by how modern and ´European´ feeling the city is. It lives up to its reputation as ´The Paris of the South´. We found a nice hostel online but when we arrived they hadn´t quite finished building it! However, the people running it were friendly and we stayed anyway. Our first excursion was a trip to watch the local team, Boca Juniors, play football. It was a great afternoon, Boca won and we saw Diego Maradonna cheering his team on from his balcony. Luckily we had no trouble, although apparently it is quite common at the Boca stadium. The next day we enjoyed a completely different atmosphere at the polo. A friend of the hostel owners took us to the match and it was a great opportunity for ... read more

My cousin Vanessa and I are staying in a wonderful flat in Buenos Aires with the old lady my Aunt used to work for. When I say flat, it probably doesn't quite give the right impression, since she owns the whole floor and I´ve never seen an apartment this big in my life! She's being so kind to us and is so active that I can't believe she's 80. Definitely says something for the Argentinian way of life! We went to her weekend house today and I saw my first polo players practising nearby. Also visited a local museum, which had the first train used in BA. Guess where it was made... Birmingham! Am off to wine tasting evening tonight with Vanessa, my friend Alison and Alison's family friends. ... read more

Well, after months of thinking about it, I'm actually here in Buenos Aires! Having spent fourteen hours on the flight from London, I decided to spend most of the afternoon wandering around the city to get the blood flowing again! My first impressions are that it's a big, fairly grimy city but it doesn't really feel hectic. For me, it's kind of 70% Madrid, 30% Havana. I'll hopefully get a better taste for it when Alison and Vanessa are here with me next week. I did start by having my first Argentinian beef at lunchtime though and am looking forward to more of it! The hostel is basic but fine and I even got a big hug from the owner (she mistook me for her goddaughter but it was very welcoming none the less!). I'm heading ... read more

Being in Buenos Aires, we couldn´t not go to a Tango show, so with Hannah, Rachel , Al and Ian from the Hostel we went to ´Cafe Tortoni´ , one of the most famous and certainly oldest Tango venues in Buenos Aires. It was great evenings entertainment and having front row seats next to the small stage we could really appreciate the skill of the dancers and the amazing pianist. He was really good and had quite a few solo show-off moments! There were also two singers who sang in between dances. Unfortunately our Spanish wasn´t good enough to understand quite what they were singing, but we foolishly tried to join in the sing-along at the end!... read more

We were told that when we came to Buenos Aires, we should try and see a football match at either River Plate or Boca Juniors to experience the fanatacism of the Argentinian crowds. With looking at the schedules we managed to arrive in B.A just in time for the ´Classico´ between these two giants of the game. We were taken to the ground by bus then walked amongst the cheering River Plate fans through security pat downs and into the crowd. We were warned they might confiscate camera batteries (potential missiles) but luckily they turned a blind eye. The crowd were really hyped up after a two hour build up and when the teams came on the pitch thousands of streamers were thrown onto the pitch, flares were let off, and both sections of supporters twirled ... read more

Tuesday I had my last placements at the hospital and with Maria. The hospital was in the middle of a bomb scare when i arrived, so we sat outside at a cafe under the shade of a tree and just chatted about travelling, and the differences between Cordoba and BA, and Chile and Argentina. I was feeling pretty damn rough, I think ive finally caught that bug that's been going round, despite all my cocky protests that ive never been ill out here yet, and that i never get ill. Serves me right really. Dragged myself out of bed to go see Maria, went through a story she was meant to read with her, took a farewell pic and said my goodbyes. Really upsetting really, its strange to think that i'll never she her again. Was ... read more

We got the weather right and managed to be leaving Colon for Buenos Aries just as it started to rain. Abit annoyed that the taxi we booked from the Hotel to the bus station was pinched from under our noses but never mind! Turned up at St Nicholas HI hostel in Buenos Aries on Avenida Bartoleme Mitre. Great hostel with comfy dorm beds. Next to a road but as usual I still sleep like a log! After a brief walk about town, we went on a guided Bicycle tour around the City. this was really good and helped us orientate ourselves too. Today we went to the grave of Evita, which is situated in a huge cemetary with hundreds of tombs? for famous Argentines. After this we went to the Evita museum and learned more about ... read more

Thursday i took a wander round Palermo Viejo in the morning because it was such a lovely day. All the trees are starting to turn green, and the buildings look so elegant in dappled sunshine. Palermo is all pretty much low rise, old buildings with these ornate carvings and massive doors and windows, its so beautiful. Im not going to get many more chances just to wander around this neighbourhood, so i thought i should make an effort. Thursday was also my last day at school, it went fine, and the 7ths even gave me a round of applause and thanked me etc, quite touching really! Maria gave me some chocolate as a bday prezzy, and I came home and got ready to go out to club 69. We had a guy from Gari's local wine ... read more
