I went back to BA, a third time. Got an apartment this time in lovely Palermo Viejo in a high-rise with a doorman. Great little place with a fabulous view. I entertained a couple of times- Mark, Martha, Martin, etc. came over for wine and cheese, and the view... For two weeks, I went to school to improve my Spanish base further. I learned many new verbs and new tenses of all verbs. It helps. But I still suck. Will have to keep at it stateside. M&M and I wined and dined, sometimes with David, sometimes with Martin, mostly without either, in the fabulous city. We took in the opera "La Boheme" at the historic Teatro Colon. We ate at Sucre, where Bono ate a week or so before. We ate at many of the finer ... read more

I have a secret. I have a crush. Fernando Two is what we call him in class. He plays the standup bass and laughs at all my corny jokes....very hard. He is also very sweet. Today the secret came out at lunch. Both of my teachers, Karina and Julie think I should go for it. I want to draw smiley faces all over this page. I'm going to bat my eyelashes as much as possible on Monday. ACK! Crush city, I have arrived... read more

I bought some suede shoes today . . . and they're like butter on my feet. They were only about $55 w/ the exchange, and they’re from the Argentine leather shoe-maker Ferraro. I want to get another pair already, but that might be ridiculous. Meanwhile, I decided today that I’m going to travel to Mendoza (Argentine wine country), then over the Andes and to Santiago during Easter-week. I’m going to travel with one of the other Rotary Scholars, Emily (see picture). Mendoza is pretty near the border between Argentina and Chile, due west of Buenos Aires. Even though it won’t be too warm, we’ll probably also spend a day and go to the Chilean coast. Also, the Rotary District Conference for Buenos Aires is coming up next week, and I’m going to be attending at least ... read more

Tonight I had dinner with Alejandro Teper, a doctor friend of my dad who lives here in Buenos Aires. He does the same type of research, pulmonary pediatrics, and eerily has the same last name (though with only one 'p'). It turns out they only live a few blocks from me here in Palermo. They were very nice to me and fed me good beef, wine, and applie pie (that really is the Argentine way). Alegandro and his wife gave me lots of travel advice, like where to go in Patagonia, and also told me about some cool non-touristy places to see tango here in the city. Alejandro's nephew goes to my university, so maybe we'll meet up, and his brother is an actor who's currently in a play in a theater in my neighborhood. So, ... read more

After spending almost 2 months in Patagonia, it was nice to arrive in this great and especially warmer city. The 24 th was here a national memorial day (30 years after the army took over control) What I saw was amazing, thousands of people heading to the big plaza de Mayo ,demonstrating, especially not to forget what had happened. At the plaza where the mothers of the lost children, who where speaking to the crowd, and it was a huge crowd! The rest of the day I spent some time at the dentist, since I lost my (fake) front thooth, so I havent been smiling since a week now, and I had to wait another 5 days!!! Too bad but thinks like that happen as well when traveling around! My hostel was not the best but ... read more

No pretty pictures for this entry because I can't rip out my heart...its already gone. I can't show you how I am feeling I dont even know if I can write about it....but write I must. For the tears I am about to bring I am sorry. Im sorry, Im sorry, Im sorry, Im sorry. Im sorry Jenga, Im sorry Mariah. Fuck, Im sorry. Know that our tears are falling together. For everyone else: I am sorry I haven't filled you in on the events in which I am apologizing for. I will attempt to now. This weekend in Seattle at a party, parties that my girls go to, filled with the friends of my girls, a boy went on a shooting spree. He killed 7 people. One of them was someone Jenga loved dearly and ... read more

Yes Argentina, it´s getting cheaper at last. And Buenos Aires is the best city in the world!!! Arrived absolutely shattered and immediately got a taxi to meet my Spanish teacher! We decided I would study 5 hours a day, one on one for 4 days, if I hadn´t been so tired I may have noticed the craziness of this suggestion... Checked into the Lime House hostel in the centre of town, great set up, very similar to the red hostel in montevideo. One central room with extremely high ceilings with all the dorms leading off of it, very communal. Was asleep within minutes but managed to meet a few people in the evening. Went to an all you can eat (Tenedor Libre) restaurant in spitting distance of the hostel and never looked back! A huge meat ... read more

Hola! We've been in Beunos Aires for over two weeks now and have probably got only a week left before we set off to see the rest of Latin America. The highlight so far is definately witnessing the Boca v River game at La Bombanera, home of the Boca Juniors. It's the biggest game of the season and was a sell-out months ago. We managed to get tickets through our hostel but had to fork out 50 quid each. It was the most intense football match I've ever experienced. We met up with the guy who got us the tickets, only to find out we were in the River section. Luckily, there was a party of about 15 tourists, so we didn't feel so isolated. We had to go through 5 police barriers just to get ... read more

"Indifference is the worst Attitude" "Bush, get out of Iraq" "Students on Foot for Peace" "Viva Che" "October Movement" "30,000 disappeared" and "We haven't forgotten" are some of the slogans or messages that waved through the chilly air on Friday, March 24 in the streets of Buenos Aires. It has been 30 years since the military dictatorship took hold of Argentina with terror and violence which resulted in 30,000 disappeared people and 500 babies born in captivity and stolen from their families, (only 80 of the 500 have been 'recovered'). It has been sunny almost all month, but on Friday, as if the sky itself sympathized with the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo and the 50% of the population who are unemployed, underemployed and living under the 'poverty line', the wind and clouds roared with ... read more

Hello everyone, It has been quite a while since we wrote and like always it's the harassment from loved ones that prompts us to write once again... The thing is that not much is new!! It's getting hard to write about what we're doing when we have a routine. But I guess we can scrounge around in our memories to find SOMETHING interesting to write about... We went out for Saint Patricks day here, and although there are very few Irish here or Irish decendents, it seems that Argentina siezes any opportunity to party, and since SP day fell on friday , the motivation to party was even higher. We went out with Lau and Tati, two of our good Argentine friends whom Jenica knew from Bariloche, Samu the Spaniard, and some randoms. Well there was ... read more
