Hey everyone, just so you know this is the address for my apartment where I'll be at least until August. 1548 Medrano, Piso 2, Dept. 3 e/c Costa Rica y Soler Capital Federal 1179 Buenos Aires, Argentina So I have a few days off for Easter, and I'm trying to figure out where I'd like to travel. It will be my first pure vacation time since I got here. I'm thinking Iguazu Falls since it would be something I could easily do in a few days, but it will also still be very hot there. I'm trying to prioritize my trips since I don't have a whole lot of vacation time. I'd really like to get to Iguazu Falls, Patagonia, and somewhere in the Andes. Maybe to Santiago, Chile too or Brazil if I have the ... read more

Today we went to Recoleta which is a pretty upmarket area most known for its cemetary. This is where very rich people go when they die. Its really a beautiful place. Many of the family graves have glass doors so if you peek inside you can see coffins and everything...bit spooky.... read more

Last night I went to see a ballet, Romeo and Juliet, at one of the large theaters here. I went with two of the other Rotary Scholars. It was a nice show. I don't think I'm a huge fan of ballet, it was a little long, but it was beautiful and the music was nice. It was also surprisingly cheap. The opera, ballet, and orchestra are very popular here, and very affordable. Even for locals, the arts are more affordable here than in the U.S., and with the exchange rate, it's a steal for us. The most expensive ticket for the ballet was $35 pesos (which is about $12 US). My ticket in the orchestra was $27 pesos, or less than $10 US! In Washington, the cheapest ticket to the Kennedy Center was like $50 or ... read more

Tonight was amazing. There is a very old and famous bar next to my apartment, Cafe Britanico. Cafe Britanico is probably the most important bar in the area because it is the place everyone goes. Old men and women, working people, young people, hip people, tourists and dogs. It has huge windows that they keep open all of the time and people lean in kissing those they know sitting in those windows. It is where people live, gather and laugh. The landlord of the building has not renewed their lease and they are due to be kicked out at the end of the month. The landlord wants to put a more tourist friendly shop that will benefit them ....not the people that own Cafe Britanico or the community. The people in this neighborhood have come together ... read more

Earlier, after I posted the pictures in the last "entry" I went to bed. My head was spinning. Pain like giant wave swells with whipcream on top would crash over the pebbles, sea shells, sea weed and drift wood that make up my flesh and bones. The pain would pound over me dragging these bits without mercy down the rough sand....leaving me raw and polished. I wanted to close my eyes and sleep but I couldn't. I was being thoughtful....full of thoughts. The 24th of March is a very important date for the world, but more specifically for Argentina.....the 24th marks the 30th anniversary of the coup that left thousands dead in its wake and a country stripped bare and vurnerable. The cut was deep and the pain is still fresh and hot. Today was a ... read more

uhh... I went out with Irish people for their holiday last night. It was pretty fun, I got sufficiently drunk... and I got a free t-shirt... holla. I really love this city. I often lament about how I love small towns like Davis. Davis is great because you don´t ever have to drive, and you know everybody. I always thought that cities sucked because the only city I know is Los Angeles. But Los Angeles isn´t a city, its a haphazardly constructed heavily-populated expanse of land that dissolves into the ocean. Buenos Aires has reminded me that REAL city life is awesome. So in answer to your question mister president, ¨Yes I can move to a major metropolitan area and live comfortably, however I have made the decision to return back to the small town I ... read more

A month can go so fast, especially when it's the first month you've ever lived outside of your home town and especially when you choose to spend it in Buenos Aires. it takes a while to adjust but, as with everything in life, if you look at the so-called bad things from a certain point of view then you start to realise that they aren't bad, they're just different to what you're used to. All you have to do is remember that it's you that is different from the norm, not that IT is alien to you. So, what did I find to be different. well, Jugglers and not windscreen washers (although they were seen) at traffic lights made a change; Instead of a soapy sponge being slapped on the glass in front of your face ... read more

When we last spoke I was eluding border officials in Brazil. After a brief stint in a Brazillian prison... I made my way back into Argentina. (Last Friday I was in Brazil twice.) I got into Puerto Iguazu too late to catch the bus to Buenos Aires that day, so I spent the night there, again. I was able to cut out around 2 on an eighteen hour journey to Retiro bus station in Buenos Aires. Our bus was stopped by national police five hours into the journey. Apparently someone had sent a kilo of marijuana in the cargo hold of the bus. It took an hour, but they finally let our bus continue on. I got to BA on Sunday morning. I went to different hostels, but none had rooms. I met a Danish girl, ... read more

Arrived from London via Sao Paolo. Slept all the way so the flight went quick. This city is much bigger and busier than I thought. The taxi from the airport drove through some very poor areas on the way to our apartment...makes Redfern look pretty classy. Our place is in an area called Abasto which used to be known for shady tango bars and cocain use in the 80's but has been cleaned up in the last 10 years starting with the redevelopment of the old Abasto wholesalers market building into another depressing American style shopping mall. At least they kept part of the old exterior of the building which is really cool.... read more
