Well we started our trip with a flight from Wilmington to Atlanta, then Atlanta to Amsterdam. We were in first class lie flat seats on this flight and started out with a toast of champagne. I watched 2 movies and really didn't sleep. We arrive in Amsterdam and head to the airline club for a bit then onto our next flight to Mumbai. We go thru the check in portion up to where they are checking our passports. Shelly makes it thru but the guy tells me, I'm sorry you are not allowed to board this flight, your visa to India is expired. WHAT???? I thought it was good for a year and it says it expires 08-04-2014. That is the European date so April 8th, 10 days before. They yell at Shelly to get out ... read more

We awoke in Fort Lauderdale to 77 degrees and clouds in the sky which burned off by the time we boarded the ship. Not to appear eager but we were the first in line for the cruise. Ship boarding early has its benefits--we were able to take a few photos before the crowds arrived and find a good spot to wait for our room to be ready. And speaking of rooms--we purchased an inside cabin which means a small room with no window. A few weeks ago I called to see if we were eligible for an upgrade. Well to our surprise when we opened the door to our cabin, we not only had a window but a room with a balcony. I paid for a windowless room and received a room with a deck. We ... read more

I leave for Haiti tonight. I am working with a group called Grace4Haiti based out of Nebraska. The core group has operating every day in the hospital. I already have 8 cases lined up, and will manage any of the orthopaedic trauma that comes through. I will be staying in a barracks type of setting, and the meals are prepared by two women who work in the home. There is no hot water, but it is supposed to be very hot, so likely not too big of an issue. One day, I get to travel to a rural hospital to work with the one orthopaedist they have on staff. I will also be lecturing to the nursing school about wound care and splinting. I had some help translating my presentations, as no one speaks English, and ... read more

Geo: 29.9768, 32.5327 Temperature: 21C 70F Distance travelled: 3356 nautical miles Aqaba was our last visit to Asia Minor otherwise known as the Middle East. We now head for the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal. This is the long leg home. Although we still have a few more stops before we disembark, the talk now turns to what next….?? We have made the acquaintance of 3 Australian families. As they are so far from home, Aussies tend to make the most of their travels to other parts of the world. Alyson is travelling with her mum, Joanna. They will disembark in Napoli where they will travel by train to Rome and stay for 2 nights before flying on to Paris for another 2 nights before taking another flight to Venice to pick up the MSC Armonia ... read more

Temp: 77F 25C Distance travelled: 2063 nautical miles Now we have 4 days cruising up the Red Sea. This will give me the chance to explain a little about life on board. What do we get up to for 4 days without setting foot on land? This is not the longest stint at sea we have experienced but up until now it has certainly been the hottest! Having left Salalah behind us, the ship headed back out in to the Gulf of Aden. The next leg of our odyssey will take us up the length of the Red Sea turn right up the Gulf of Aqaba to arrive in the city of the same name; the only port in the Kingdom of Jordan, some 1,937 nautical miles ahead of us. The Red Sea is so named ... read more

Queen Mary Day 17-18 More fog and mist and not much was happening as far as physical activity. The weather had turned a bit cooler and the trip south from Shanghai to Hong Kong was a little disappointing because of the weather and not being able to go out on deck. We attended some information lectures and while Phillip should have been as interested in Capt Arthur Philip as Jennifer, somehow his brain did not want to play the same game. Lack of oxygen (probably manners) had Phillip falling asleep and to Jennifer’s horror, the audience heard the zzzzzz’s hitting the soundwaves. Someone did say they learnt something from the lecture. Jennifer actually learnt two points, firstly that Capt Philip did not bring the convicts just to set up a convict settlement, but rather the convicts ... read more

Colder and Foggier. Wetter and darker. I slept terribly and woke with angst. I needed to summit. The day was a short one in the dark of the rising cloud. I was swirling up, damply. It felt like I was in slow motion. My small wristwatch weighed down my hand. My light pack heaved down its burden. My bright blue jacket beaded with moisture. The mist was heavy. I wasn't there. It wasn't happening. My breathing was shorter and tougher. I had lived in Colorado two years ago and the mountains were high. The Himalayas were 2 times higher than the very highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains 14,000! This day I was walking to that elevation to be in the shadow of peaks of nearly 28,000 feet. It's no wonder my body was slowing and ... read more

Happy Mother's day to all you mummies back at home. Had a brilliant time in the last two ports. Mauritius and the Reunion island. Yes Stevie that is near Madagascar. We arrived in Mauritius on Friday, travelled over land through the sugar cane plantations and boarded a Catamaran which took us around the island where we saw the white sandy beaches and swam in the warm blue seas of the Indian ocean.Reunion Island was beautiful too. We visited the city and travelled in the heat which is still 30 plus. Now back on the high seas on our way to South Africa. It's a hard life but someone has to do it. Xx... read more
