This is the last full day at sea before we get to Sydney. That means it is the last day of enjoying all the pleasures of cruising. It does NOT mean the end of our story because we have about 10 more days scheduled on land before we return home, but it does mean we will slide down a little on the “pampered passenger” scale. That being said, this is as good a time as any to proclaim our appreciation and praise the service we received this cruise. However good this was, it actually is not unusual – we always get excellent service from Princess Cruises. We don’t want to make this into a commercial, but this is a terrific way to take a vacation and we recommend it to anyway who wants to see different ... read more

Hello from someplace in the Coral Sea, sailing south back across the Tropic of Capricorn. Yes, we have left the tropics and are back in the ordinary Southern Hemisphere (latitude 26S). It was very rainy this morning so it was fortunate that we did not have any port excursions today. But the rain stopped about 11:00 and the temperature got up to the high 70’s by mid-afternoon (although it was overcast all day). We received a question last night about our blog, so we are going to make it into a TRIVIA QUESTION: “ Read the results of the competition regarding the number of days one cruised. You indicated you two weren’t close, but how many days have you sailed?” So the trivia question is HOW MANY DAYS do you think we have sailed. Watch for ... read more

Queen Mary Day 13-15 These three days have been at sea with not much besides food, sleep, talks, and the odd performance. We have seen a few islands, but it is amazing how many there are in the vicinity and we cannot see them. The trip has taken us passed the Philippines and we are heading for Shanghai. There have been a greater number of shipping vessels in the area, and they have ranged in size from small fishing vessels to tankers and car freighters. Have also seen a few small “runabouts”. One of the amazing sights relates to “flying fish”. They seem to be everywhere since we left the Queensland coast and they appear to “fly” for about 70 metres. Some people have said they have seen dolphins and we have seen the odd fish. ... read more

Geo: 12.5143, -69.9774Friday, March 28thAt SeaHow did this happen? How can it already be the last day of our cruise?? We are sailing north to Fort Lauderdale between Haiti and Cuba and will follow the Cuban coast a lot of the way.The winds are calm this morning; Jeff has set his alarm for 6:50 so we can watch the sun rise but it is too overcast. It is nice out on the balcony though. He goes to get us coffee and I crawl back in bed. We drink our coffee and dink around...deciding to walk our 5 miles around the Promenade deck. We don't get started until 8-ish, but it is early enough that there aren't a lot of others out walking yet. The deck and some of the stairs are wet from the spray of ... read more

I guess I’ll head north now… I stood on the back deck and watched as Ushuaia vanished into the drizzle. The mountains were gleaming with fresh snow and the greenery was shining in the early evening light. The Beagle Channel was lumpy and strong winds howled across the decks. Gulls followed in the wake of the ship as we headed towards the open ocean of the ever–grumpy South Atlantic... It was eerie being on a ship with no guests! Empty rooms, quiet hallways and decks, no restaurant, no bar, no lectures – nothing! It’s ideal for getting stuff done though! I’m on the ship with Niki, my work colleague, for stage one of the repositioning phase of the ship - a four day stint up the coast from Ushuaia, Argentina to Montevideo, Uruguay. ... read more

Last Blog for this voyage! It’s hard to believe but this 49-day journey ends tomorrow morning in Ft. Lauderdale. The Captain in his midday announcements stated that he expected to pick up the harbour pilot tomorrow morning at 4:15 and that we would be at the pier by 5:30. Our disembarkation time is set for 08:15am and a short trip over to the airport for a 11:51am flight home. We expect to be back to the house by early evening. You will see that the following notes cover a full week of days at sea and shore excursions. Our internet connectivity has been intermittent, especially in areas close to the equator and a number of island ports. It was explained in one of the daily “Today On Location” bulletins as follows: Possible ... read more

Geo: 12.5143, -69.9774Thursday, March 27thAt SeaThis is the first of our last two 'at sea' days. We did the cruises in this order because we knew how relaxing it would be on the boat here at the end. We've planned a full day. After our 5 mile walk around and around the Promenade deck, we go to the coffee bar to buy coffee. We've never done this before and it's good that we did it now as the coffee is delicious! Very happy we didn't discover that earlier in our cruise or we'd be broke by now.We took our coffee and yogurt to the Princess Theater to hear a talk about the ship's navigational systems. It sounds dull but it wasn't. We learned a lot about the navigation systems used on board and they are not ... read more

Hello from the Coral Sea. We left Port Douglas yesterday evening and cruised east, back out through the barrier reef. Now today we have been cruising leisurely south and we will enter back through another passage in the reef and will be back on shore tomorrow. But that means that today is a day of rest and leisure. David woke up early and went up to the Fitness Center for some treadmill work. He tried something called an elliptical machine, but it was a bit more exercise than he wanted and settled for the treadmill. Then he went to the Promenade Deck and did a few laps there. He got back and found that upon leaving the cabin he had not awakened Janet. We got cleaned up and were ready for our Sea Day. One thing ... read more

Geo: 12.5143, -69.9774Wednesday March 26th Aruba Aruba is one of our favorites places to snorkel - this is the third time we've been here; the last time was April, 2013 so 11 months ago. We left the ship around 10:45 and walked around the corner and across the street to catch the bus to Malmok Beach. Our timing was so good! The bus was right there - and it costs only $2.50 each. This isn't really a beach as there is very little sand. It is mostly big rocks (like Dominica), but we know of a sandy spot to get into the water. Malmok is not quite as far out as the California Lighthouse and if you didn't know about it you'd be concerned with getting off the bus out in nowhere. There were two excursion ... read more

Geo: 12.5143, -69.9774Tuesday, March 25thBonaireWe are taking a Princess excursion today - we've never been to Bonaire before and need to spend some of this cabin credit we've built up! Before our excursion, we walk our normal 5 miles then have a small breakfast. Our excursion is to Klein Bonaire, a very very small slip of land adjacent to Bonaire and accessible only by water taxi. We've read and have been told that there are NO facilities and very little shade on Klein Bonaire so we were leery of taking the trip on our own and are happy about the excursion. The water taxi is a family owned business that does a lot of cruise ship work and operates almost every day of the year.During the short ride to the island, they tell us the best areas ... read more
