The South Island of New Zealand, dear reader, is one of the world's most beautiful travel destinations. While most of the population and industry are concentrated on the North Island, mother nature has blessed the South Island with an abundance of natural beauty. In fact the stunning surroundings are enough to take your breath away. The journal continues from where we left off in Wellington, in company with the Kiwi Experience bus team that started our adventures out of Auckland. Our driver loaded the bus and his passengers on to the Interislander ferry, and we settled down for the three hour crossing of the Cook Strait before arriving in Picton. We'd landed in the south, and were ready to explore and experience new Kiwi adventures! Our itinerary took us down the west coast, where we enjoyed ... read more

Matemateaonga Track & The Bridge to Nowhere Whanganui National Park This should be called five go bush... as we did get a bit feral on this short but enjoyable local tramp where we were joined by Wal, Fran and Hen (who forgot his trousers but not his ability to whine). This trip was taken in Christmas of 2001 and is one of a series of family tramps that our extended family does. We started off with a jet boat ride up the Whanganui River with extended family for a visit the “Bridge to Nowhere” Tech Note To ‘h’ or not to ‘h’ such a big debate over such a little (silent) letter…. Maybe it’s her name but Hel (who hails from Wangadonga) thinks all words can be improved by the addition of an h and so ... read more

I crossed the Tasman Sea on a three hour flight to reach destination Auckland, the largest city of our closest neighbour and great mates from New Zealand. The country of four million people is blessed with sublime natural scenery, friendly people, superb tourist infrastructure and world class beer. Oh, and it's also the adventure capital of the world! If you have a taste for adventure and wanna do something wild and crazy ... sweet as a nut bro, just come to NZ and the Kiwis will take care of you. I was out of the airport like a shot, and had a few days to explore Auckland before joining a pre booked bus trip with Kiwi Experience. I chose the option of a three week jump on, jump off tour of the North and South Island ... read more

Arrived in Sydney. Scott and I bought a camper van this morning and it is soooo groovy! It is brightly painted with flowers, mushrooms and a sunshine, and has curtains, a bed, carpet, a little camper stove and a cabinet to keep all our clothes etc in! The weather here is weird. It was pouring it down with rain this morning, so we spent all morning getting soaked whilst running around trying to buy a van. Some of the ones we looked at were pathetic, but when we saw this one we bought it on the spot - hope its OK. The weather is nice now and we are at Bondi Beach...guess why I am here at e-mail instead of sunning myself and regaining the tan I lost in New Zealand? The retard at check-in in ... read more

It’s my last day in New Zealand before heading off to the Land-of-the-roo. Since I last wrote we crossed over to the South Island and spent two weeks driving all over it. First, we headed to the Franz-Josef and Fox Glaciers and did a small hike on the toe of the Franz-Josef. That night, we stayed in Queenstown before heading for the Fjordlands National Park the next day for a boat cruise on tranquil Milford Sound. Moving on to the East, I made Scott make a stop at the Moeraki Boulders, which for some unknown reason, I became obsessed with seeing. They are a collection of circular boulders, some cracked open to reveal a hollow inside, like eggs. Very strange-looking! If you didn't know better you would swear they were dinosaur eggs. Next was Oamaru, where ... read more

We're in Wellington, New Zealand at the moment, killing time before getting a ferry to the south island tonight. We've been here about a week and, so far, it’s great. Auckland was a really cool city, and from there we headed to Hamilton to catch up with a friend from Japan, Michelle. Got to experience some good old kiwi culture - a mad beer drinking competition! Believe me, these guys can really gulp it down (Brits pale in comparison!). The best news is that the girls out-drank the boys - hoorah! It's official - girls are better drinkers than boys!!! Next on the list was the town of Rotorua, famous for its geothermal areas - geysers, mudpools, and that distinct eggy smell! After a quick side-trip to the coastal town of Tauranga to spend a few ... read more

I wanted to get up pretty early today, as I wanted to take a photo of where I had been staying during my time in Sydney. This meant that I had now finished another photo film roll. Bryan then drove me to a film processing shop that does a ‘one-hour turnaround’. My flight was taking off at 16:30, but due to ‘enforced security checks’, I had to be checked-in by 1:30pm. I began my packing this morning and realised I may have to leave a few bits behind, that I didn’t really need to take home, or stuff which I wouldn’t be allowed to take home, like spray deodorant. My suitcase was packed as tightly as possible, and I was a little worried it would be overweight. I just had to carry more hand luggage than ... read more
