27-30 October 2002 Leading up to this entry I have been working in the Melbourne suburbs. Including a couple of days in Drysdale, a small town not far from Geelong. I also was commissioned to photograph a wedding for another photographer and this morning I went to a Holy Communion and got some nice family photos. It was mid-day when I drove to Ballarat and booked into a Hotel/Motel. Got my key from reception and walked upstairs to my room. It looks like being a busy week. I’m working in two centres each day of the week. Sessions start at 8.30am and finish just before mid-day. Afternoon sessions start at 1pm and last until 4.30pm. 31 October 2002 Over the years I have recognised noise travels from one room to another very easy. I had to ... read more

We arrived in Fiji late in the evening and spent the night in transit at a small motel type establishment that seemed to be almost at the end of the runway. According to everything we'd read, our ultimate destination was a resort on a palm fringed beach complete with pools, bars and restaurants, so we were keen to leave the diesel fumes of our slightly ramshackle overnight accommodation as soon as possible. Convincing Scott of this however proved to be somewhat difficult. He'd discovered that it had a small playground, and nothing was going to drag him away from it, well at least not without a lot of loud protesting. This did leave us contemplating the rather extreme difference in vacation requirements between us and and least one of our offspring. Our holidays would be a ... read more

They boarded a flight to Alice Springs, intrigued as to what the Red Centre brings, from dreamtime stories, a culture treat, to drunk Aboriginals roaming the street. Didn’t stay for too long but up for some fun, they found novel ways to see the sun, they watched it set astride a camel’s hump, then rise in a balloon ride, touched down with a bump. They took a camping tour to Uluru, that’s Ayers Rock to me & you, Kings Canyon and The Olgas completed the tour, walked for hours, made their muscles sore. Slept under the stars wrapped up in a swag, on top of an ant’s nest - jeez what a dag! Ate damper bread cooked on the campfire, their joke repertoire was pretty dire. ... read more

Daar aangekomen sneakten we er ... read more

In late 2002 we decided to take all three of our offspring on a serious overseas adventure together for the first time. We eased them into any potential culture shock by spending the first week still in our homeland, at the Couran Cove Resort on South Stradbroke Island just north of the Gold Coast. It mightn't have been all that far in distance from "the Coast", but we might as well have been on the moon for all the resemblance it bore to the Coast's high rise glitz and glamour. Couran Cove was renowned at the time as one of the country's first eco-friendly resorts, complete with recycled water, solar panels, no petrol powered vehicles (it was only accessible by boat/ferry), no plastic bags, solar hot water and low rise buildings. We stayed in a small ... read more

15 October 2002 This Benalla motel doesn’t have the most comfortable bed. It’s only because I have been tired that my sleeps have been all right. Yesterday was easy and I managed to work my way through three rooms to finish by mid-day. I’ve been thinking how much longer I’m going to continue in this business. When I go to centres where the children are easy to work with, I actually enjoy my job. At other times, such as today, every time I thought a room was finished there was somebody new to photograph. This happens when children arrive at all times of the day and it makes a straightforward job hard. I ran out of time in the morning and had to wait two hours while the children slept before I could finish the job ... read more

My first time to Australia, how exciting! Met up with Sarah and Rachael at Chek Lap Kok airport at about 5ish. Our plane was boarding at 1910, Qantas Airways. It was quite sad leaving my parents (for the first time...apart from the trip to Devon for 5 days when I was in year 6...!) As soon as we got to Cairns we took a bus to Wild World...tired and feeling skanky we looked at all the animals and took a photo with a Koala. The koalas were extremely shy and rather "Drugged up" but were immensely cute to cuddle up to. I had never come so close to "wild" animals, so was a bit worried when kangaroos actually ate from the palm of my hand. I was also shocked when we watched the bullfrog race, it ... read more

Touch down in Perth, WA, chuffed when the locals said G'day, they started off on their Ozzy dream, by sharing a dorm with a guy called Raquim, late night drug deals & cheesy feet, when he stole their bread, they had nothing to eat, undeterred they loved the place, met cool people like Christian & Jace. Heaps of things to see, they found, the Pinnicles protruding from the ground, In Freo, a late night prison tour, a sweat broke out from every pore. Then off to Rotto to ride a bike, met the resident Quokkas who were rodent-like. Wanting to see what the west had in store, they hired a car so that they could explore. They walked though caves & amongst tree-tops, visited a cove with elephant shaped rocks. The bar in Albany was kind ... read more

I had decided to leave life in beautiful Frankland on the 13th of August to allow for a weekend of fun in Perth before beginning my adventure up the west coast. This happened to be a Friday. Normally I am not a superstitious person, but this day has changed my perception. Naturally, before I could leave Frankland I had to have a bit of a farewell bash. And, naturally, this involved me having one or two drinks too many (ie. getting rottenly drunk and not recalling a whole lot of the evening’s events). Not to worry!!! It has happened before and I have no doubt it will happen again!!!! None the less it was a little concerning to wake up in the morning with not much recollection of the previous night and no idea how I ... read more
