Sky diving over a lake in NZ If you are wondering why there is a picture on the way down of my bare feet over the lake....it is because I was wearing flip flops at the time and the guys told me that I couldn't jump with them as they would fall off (obviously). Despite the sun my feet were frozen by the time we landed.... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch March 6th 2002

March 6, 2002 Not far from Christchurch there are huge geodes that have washed out of the hillside that borders the beach. Our bus pulled into the parking area. Everyone got out and followed our guide along a boardwalk and down a set of wooden steps. The view that confronted us made us gasp in amazement. There littered on the beach were hundreds of huge round geodes. Never in my life had I imagined such a sight. We were fortunate enough to have a geologist with us on the trip. He looked at them with amazement and from the way they were shaped was sure of their kind and the way they must have been formed. He had never heard of this grouping in New Zealand. He proceeded to explain the entire scenario to us. Later ... read more

2002/02 Entry 3 These three Tasmanian entries will not include an actual travel journal as I don't have the time to go through my notes. What I think are the best pictures have been posted and a few comments here and there kind of tell the story:) ....feel free to ask questions about any part of the trip. Basically DV and myself rode from Launceston to Hobart through the centre of Tassy, then back up to Launceston via the east coast.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays February 13th 2002

We have just been to the Whitsundays and it was basically 'hotter than hell' (our most used phrase of the week!). Luckily, we spent most of our time on a boat with sea breezes and air-conditioned cabins- sheer luxury. We spent 3 days and nights cruising around the gorgeous tropical islands and visiting the best dive and snorkel spots. Many of the coral 'bommies' were so high that they almost reached the surface fron 20 metres below, so were good for snorkelling. The coral and fish life were so colourful. I also got to use my diving certification for the first time since leaving Thailand. For the first dive I was pretty nervous, but everything went ok. Someone else on the trip ran out of air though and had to sprint to the surface - a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach February 5th 2002

G'Day, We are now at Airley Beach, and are taking a 3 day cruise to the Whitsunday Islands starting tonight. Since I last wrote from Sydney, we have done and lot of travelling and covered a lot of mileage (kilometreage?!). After finally getting the van up and running in Sydney, we headed south to Melbourne and met up with a friend from Japan for a couple of days before giving our van a good test - the scenic Great Ocean Road. No problem at all - phew! From there, we headed up into the Dandenong Ranges to meet my aunt and uncle and numerous cousins who I had never even met before! It was cool to finally get to meet a whole different part of the family! From Melbourne, we have been making our way north, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland January 26th 2002

This was the trip that started the travel madness. E had won a prize from Ansett Airlines to go anywhere in Australia, and one from Air New Zealand to go anywhere on their network. Then Ansett went broke, and Air New Zealand said they would honour the prize with a trip to any destination in NZ. We were saving up to go to Gallipoli in Turkey for Anzac Day, so we were not interested in spending a lot, so decided to travel to Auckland for the Australia Day long weekend. ... read more

TRAVELLING IS ALWAYS PART of my agenda in life. Being a Sagittarian, I always believe that my zodiac is destined to explore the globe. My travelling experience is coupled with two things: study/work and hobby. Most of my travels abroad are the result of my desire to pursue further studies and trainings in the field of my profession or basically just part of my job. The never-ending process of learning also gives me the adrenalin to go out of the country and meet a lot of people from different walks of life. My two-year stay (2002-2004) in Australia was a rewarding experience. This was part of my postgraduate research program in environmental engineering at the University of Queensland (UQ). During my schooling, it was a privilege to travel around Australia, especially in its major cities ... read more
