Oceania » Vanuatu » Santo November 24th 2000

Well, I'm in Vanuatu now and it is hot, a Darwin-type heat. Earlier, after I landed in Port Vila having flown in from Brisbane, I found my way from the international terminal to the domestic terminal. I plopped myself on the ground. Immediately, I was face to face with two curious Vanuatu kids with dark skin and the biggest of wide grins. A minute later I heard, "pssst, pssst" and there were two teenage Vanuatu girls who wanted to know all about me, my name, where I was from, and where I was going. After this I checked in for my flight from the capital city to the island of Espiritu Santo. After this I finally got some Vanuatu money, but only after having a session of amused confusion at the bank counter. It still hasn't ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Noosa Heads November 15th 2000

The following is a combined multiple journal entry detailing my weeklong holiday in Noosa November 15, 2000 I arrive in Noosa in a cloud of soup. All good. Great Location. The beach is really close, as are the shops. There is a movie thearter close by. I saw Snatch today. It was another incredible triumph from the creators of Lock, Stock, and 2 Smoking barrels. So far this hostel, Halse Lodge, has a little more of a party atmosphere than I expected. And here I was thinking I was going to get a relaxing, laid back surf holiday. I don't mind though. It definitely has a different vibe as compared to the hostels in the Northern Territory. The hostel does however go into severe lockdown at 11pm. The doors lock, the lights blink out, and the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Palm Cove October 20th 2000

Next stop was the coastal village of Palm Cove, just north of Cairns. We stayed at the massive Novotel Palm Cove Resort, which was about as far removed in style and ambience from the laid back peace and quiet of Great Keppel Island as it was possible to get. The tennis courts, large gym, and golf course with its attached pro shop were a bit wasted on us - the parents of three youngsters under eight. Our only prerequisites were a Kids Club and a pool. We didn't think it was compulsory to get around the resort's jogging track at a satisfactory pace every morning and then follow it up with a brisk 18 holes, but given the numbers of our fellow guests who seemed to be doing exactly that it was hard to be sure. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Great Keppel Island October 12th 2000

We spent a couple of weeks with our three youngsters in the relative warmth of North Queensland. First stop was Great Keppel Island off the coast of Yeppoon. We landed at Rockhampton, and nervously boarded a small six seater aircraft for the short flight out to the island. Eight year old Scott was then very much into anything airborne, and had been salivating for several weeks at the thought of a trip in a small plane. Nine eleven was still a year away, so we probably weren't all that shocked when the pilot asked him if he wanted to take the controls for a few minutes mid-flight. I think Scott knew a bit too much about what could go wrong. He politely declined. No problem thought the pilot, we'll get five year old Emma to fly ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Coffs Harbour October 7th 2000

So I've returned to Coffs Harbour. I feel stronger, more self reliant and assured this time around. It takes returning to a place you've already been, like Sydney or Coffs Harbour, to judge your progress and just how much you have changed. It will be interesting to see how I feel when I return to Brisbane and my grounds keeping job at Queensland Uni. This was a good day. The husband of the family that I am staying with is a crack Fisherman, the other day he caught 10 fish in a two-hour expedition. Today I woke up at 5am, ate a couple of meat pies with sauce for breakfast and then we were off to go fishing in his little motor boat. It was still dark when we launched the boat. The seas were rough ... read more

I'm reclining here at Circular Quay, very close to Sydney Opera House, as I write this. It's been kind of neat being back in Sydney. So far I have revisited all the old haunts from back in August such as the Mercantile Hotel, Sydney Harbour, and George Street. I am staying with my cousin's friend and his wife's house in Birchgrove, which seems to be a very posh area of Sydney. What a great day. The whole Sydney is absolutely glowing in a post-Olympic celebration. It is only a couple after the festivities ended on Sunday night. I have seen people from all over the world. I saw a couple of Cameroonian gold medal winning soccer players and many people are still walking around with their Olympic credentials triumphantly swinging from around their neck. I was ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs October 1st 2000

Well, it’s my last night in the Territory. What better time to collect my thoughts on the Territory and the traveling lifestyle in general. What better way to end my trip with the Olympic closing ceremony and all. The Olympics have really been an integral part of my trip as they bring together all the different nationalities here in a common ground that everyone can relate to. The ceremony also allowed me to see Australia show itself to the world from Elle McPherson to Slim Dusty and his crazy good rendition of "Waltzing Matilda." The whole backpacker/hostel lifestyle was actually many times better than I thought it would be. You never feel like you're all alone because you are constantly meeting new people coming and going from all directions. That being said, you only get glimpses ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Uluru September 26th 2000

I just had a great day in the Australian Outback. It all started at 4:55am with my early morning shower. I misjudged the Rock yesterday. Arriving before dawn was one of the greatest experiences and I cannot say that I have many like it. It rises out of the pre-dawn murk, like some timeless wonder. And as you walk around it you actually feel this elemental power. You feel the wind. You smell the red dirt. And you hear the sway of the bush grass as the outback wind whips through. The Aboriginal owners urge you not to climb it. That is not what this place is about. Rather, they urge you to listen to the story it has to tell. Today was full of truly unique experiences for me. With the red Rock rising ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Uluru September 25th 2000

It's Monday night and I'm lying on a stretcher near Uluru. The stars are so clear in the desert sky. At first today I was just bumming about how this tour wasn't like the Kakadu dreams tour and how all the same people weren't hear. But then I realized. HEY FOOL YOU'RE IN THE OUTBACK IN AUSTRALIA. Snap out of it. This is where you have wanted to be for ages. I shouldn't get down about what wasn't, but rather should be stoked about what was. Ayers Rock was just as I suspected. It was a rock. It was there and nice to look at, but Bill Bryson blew out of proportion in his book. Tomorrow we wake up ridiculously early for an early morning walk around it. Note: The Aussie Diaries are a XX part ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs September 20th 2000

Alice Springs is all right. It has everything I like, including Internet cafes, movies, and even McDonald's. So far the hostel isn't that great. The people here don't seem like my kind of people. They are all older for the most part, and seem to all be doing their own thing. So I guess this is my chance to establish a routine in a totally different environment. One that comes complete with bush flies, hot midday sun, cold night, and a desert oasis kind of environment. I don't think I am going to get the communal feeling of Katherine or the laid back feeling of Tropical Darwin. I'll probably have to wait for my upcoming outback tour if I hope to have any fun memories to look back on here. Hope the tour has some cool ... read more
