In Tauranga!!! Man it seems we cannot get away from this place!! So, off we went to Napier about 10 days ago. We got there, everything was kool with the hostel we stayed at, we got jobs doing apple tree thinning(cutting small or damaged apple's off etc) and we were going to stay for a month or so, but then we got a job offer to manage a hostel in Turangi which is just outside of Taupo, in the Middle of New Zealand, near the Tongariro crossing. So we decided that it would be a great opportunity to get some experience etc and off we went again, to Turangi! We got to the hostel (Bell Bird Lodge) on the Monday last week, and by the evening had negotiated a deal with the owners for free accommodation ... read more

We arrive in Sydney at 6:55am. Very excited now. Just want to see everyone, and to start hitting the Aussie roads. No problems going through passport control, etc., but stopped off at Downtown Duty Free to get Lorraine’s (Paula and Bryan’s next door neighbour) her brandy and menthol cigs. I considered that my good deed for the day. I tried to phone Bryan’s and Eileen’s numbers to let them know I’d arrived a little earlier than thought, but my phone wouldn’t work. I waited for about half-hour and made my way to the Avis desk. Just as I did, they came through the entrance. I said my ‘hellos’ then got the hire car sorted out. I got a free upgrade to a Holden (Vauxhall in England!) Astra. With a full tank of petrol, Damon came with ... read more

I stayed in Auckland for three days (which is too long really b/c it's not that special - it's kinda like North American cities but with some mild differences). I met some really nice people there - Mike and Adrienne from Wyoming, Jenny from Montana, and Veronica from Munich, Germany. The five of us hit it off so well and we were all tired of Auckland pretty fast so we decided to head North together to a cool little town called Paihia. It's really beautiful little town but there wasn't a lot of work so we decided to head further North to Kerikeri to look for fruit picking jobs. We booked the bus for today actually but I was getting kind of antsy about not working so I went to a bakery in Paihia to ask ... read more

In September 2003 I started travelling with a friend of mine. By car we drove around Australia in about 5 Months. Free-camping in National Parks, Surfing the Coast and Hiking in the Australian mountains. Car troubles in the middle of the outback were we got stuck for 5 days (a real Australian experience) The Best I liked West Australia with its beautiful nature and it's less touristy atmosphere!... read more

My flight from London Heathrow left 15 minutes late. I was sat next to some guy from Brisbane. He was about late 30’s and he had visited France, Finland, Scotland and England, and was on his way back to Brisbane via Singapore. As it was quite a long way to Singapore, about ten hours, I thought I’d make some good conversation. He was on his way back from this ‘business trip’. Hey if that’s a ‘business trip’, then I wouldn’t mind a bit of that! His name was Glenn. I asked him about his time abroad and he said he’d had an excellent few weeks, but was very keen to get back home to the heat! I told him about my holiday plans for the next few weeks, about how I love the Australian way of ... read more

15/11/03 Well we set off from the Woolshed backpackers at 12:30 after a slow start. The drive to Roma only took 8 hours!!!! Anyway, on the way there, we stopped for a cup of coffee and my favourite, tasteless...... RICE CAKES!! In a small town called Kilkaven. This was about three to four hours into the journey. I gave up right to drive the Subaru to Sara which later, turned out to be a mistake in more ways than one! She is actualy a very good driver. I used to take the mick though. Not a good idea considering how much I liked her. Anyway, whilst listening to Linkin Park and biting my lip, Shane and I had a great idea to steel a kangaroo sign. Sara pulled over and Shane and I ran to tackle ... read more

He hoi, Vorige week walvissen en dolfijnen gezien in Kaikoura.

Well, where to start? Hmmmm.... We have posted in aaaages because we haven't had much to post about really, well not after our little excursing in dairy farming!!! Man what a bodge up that was, basically we lasted 3 days, we worked from 5am until 5pm each day on a farm with 600 cows that we as mismanagaed as you can get, the machinery on the farm was breaking down left right and centre and 3 people quit the farm whilst we were there!!! ... it didn't help that we didn't like being pissed and shat on by the cows as we milked them, not the most pleasing experience at 5am!!! Anyway...we left as quickly as possible and we've been in The Bay of Plenty for the last 3 months just working and checking out the ... read more

PNG- News #4: If you want a story without animals, DON’T READ THIS. Brandy in the heat is different than on the Queen Charlottes Islands. The fire it creates in your belly just extends to the outside atmosphere and melts all around you. It is raining, lightening and thundering tonight (a real treat) and one of the neighbour’s sick child is crying non stop (not a treat at all). You can hear the crying because all the windows are wide open all the time. I heard about two cases of malaria today. One, an eleven year old boy died. I know his mother who is HIV positive. His father died of AIDS - he had two wives so produced two widows. The other, an adult male sponsored by the European Union who will survive after spending ... read more
