So, today is the 12th August and we have been here 2 weeks ... we are in Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty at the moment, right next to the beach, wicked!:o) Although it's supposed to be winter here it has been around 14c most of the time and lots of rain, not cold at all really! The downside of coming out here at the last minute is that we have only arrived with 1000 dollars! … yup that’s right, 1000 dollars, but we don’t care, we’re on working visas and want to work, it’s much different than we’ve ever done before so we are lapping it up at the moment!! We have got work kiwi pruning at the moment, and unless you can be speeded gonzalez then you can only earn around 10 pounds a ... read more

hi. my name is brad. i am in new zealand. and we have seen yet even more cool stuff. Yesterday we finished up the adventure city of Queenstown with the famous Gondola. This is the launching spot for several hot activities. Bunjee, parasail etc. It is essentially a modern indoor skilift sort of thing to the top of a very large hill. Of course it cost way too much, and being hte ultra-fit people we are...me and lara hiked our way up. It made us stinky and hot on a cold day...but we felt o-so in-tune with nature. At the top they have arranged some good times to be had on downhill luge karts. They have the scenic and the fast routes. Heaps of fun with just enough danger to make it thrilling. That night me ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Queenstown August 7th 2003

so we have arrived in the adventure capital of the world: Queenstown, New Zealand. This town has more insane activities than i have even heard of all gathered together in one tremendous "Lifes short-play hard" sorta town. For starters, this is where A.J. Hackett invented bunjee...so we went to this sacred birthplace and watched a few blokes tumble off a bridge. Did we do it? no. we both have told ourselves it is too expensive and we have no money...which is true...but also part of me is weeny of course. It also has some variations of this like bunjee from a helicopter 500m up, a swinging gondola in the middle of a canyon or from a descending para-glider. eek. This only grazes the surface of the ba-zillion amazing and highly expensive life-flashing-before-your-eyes activies. So being on ... read more

Hey gang, I got my set of wheels: a Mitshubitshi Lancer (1990) and a cell phone (number: 021 - 147 76 63). What more does a man want? … Ik ging de volgende ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria August 4th 2003

4 August 2003 I spent today driving through western Victoria. Down the Geelong Freeway, onto the Princes Highway, then through Colac and Camperdown, both towns I have worked in before. Near Terang I turned north, heading to Mortlake. There the road joins the Hamilton Highway. It was along this stretch that I stopped for the first time when I saw an abandoned homestead and got the camera out for some shots. I stopped again near the town of Hamilton this time to photograph a small stand of trees in the middle of a paddock. Six hours after leaving Melbourne I arrived in the town of Casterton. The company had booked me into the Glenelg Hotel, which is the first building in the main street. I went to the main bar to pick up the key to ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Franz Josef August 3rd 2003

howdy hey, So we have shuffled down the coast abit to a city called franz josef. This is a very tiny town sitting at the edge of a glacier...with the primary function of getting people up there and hiking around...so thats just what we did today. We all geared up and did a walk to what they call the Terminal Face of the glacier. This is where the ground meets the ice. Our guide explained a few interesting things along the way...2 of the most interesting being: the glacier moves 3-4 meters a day....and Franz Josef is the steepest commercially climbed glacier in the world. EXcellent! So this is where we put on our special ice climbing gear....ice talons on our boots and a nice tasty ice pick.this made us all feel very official and great. ... read more

31 July 2003 After a seven hour drive last Tuesday I arrived at my pre-booked accommodation in Griffith. I have settled into this Budget motel and although it isn't as comfortable as the motel I usually stay in, it does serve good meals. I have been having both breakfast and my evening meals delivered to my unit, Which has saved me an evening trip to the local club. I was surprised to find it was right next door to the Pre-School that I enjoyed working in just a few months ago. It has been cold in the mornings and I have to pour water over the windscreen before I head off to work.... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch July 31st 2003

hello friends, me and lara have arrived in new zealand. As anticipated, the coldness factor is great. We flew into the social hub of auckland in the north island(new zealand is made up of 2 islands) and then flew into the very english city of christchurch. Strangely enough we ran into some people we surfed with a month ago. Small world (after all). Yesterday we converged upon new zealands largest Thermal Reserve. These are a collection of naturally hot springs collected in a friendly resort atmosphere in the snowy mountains. One section of pools was heated from sulpher and was about 110 degrees. Eek. but this was lovely in the chill of the timberland. Last night we stayed in what we thought was a nice quaint hostel. But after ignoring a warning about the loudness of ... read more

Today is, umm, hmmm, i think it's wednesday 30th, or it could still be tuesday, then again it could be thursday, pheweee, that 20+ hour flight really buggered up our body clocks. We arrived in Auckland at 11am on Tuesday and we had had about 5 hours sleep over the 2 days of travel as neither of us can sleep on a plane, so we were a bit messed up to say the least! We arrived at our temporary hostel called The Fat Camel in downtown Auckland, it's in a great location, pretty much easy access to everything Auckland has to offer, the staff are really friendly and helpful and the place is pretty much empty as it is winter here, so we have all the puta's for internet access and the big screen tv to ... read more
