NEWS FROM PNG #2 - First village encounter. Last weekend's visit to Rempi village, part of our in-country training, was extraordinary. I mean really extra ordinary, or in Pisin "gutpela tru". Sleeping underneath a mosquito net directly on the floor - PNG fashion. This was on the porch of a bamboo hut on stilts overlooking the ocean, which was carpeted by sharp coral. Eating freshly caught & BBQ'd parrot fish with my hands. Four young men, out of our group of fourteen, netted the fish by swimming in tandem with the net. Village men and boys climbed coconut trees after fashioning rope out of branches. The coconuts thundered down with large thuds while the "natnats" mosquitoes feasted on the blood of the white skins. Using sharp, large and intimidating bush knifes, the villagers shucked the fruit ... read more

Back on the grey (in mijn geval) screen! Zit je met een vrolijk gezicht achter de computer, of een boos gezicht? Misschien verdrietig, of in gedachten verzonken?

12 October 2003 My journey to Bendigo gave me one more chance to get shots of scenes of interest along the way and as I write in this journal another twenty shots are stored on the cameras memory card. Just around the corner from the Budget Motel is a pub that sells great meals and Kangaroo was on the menu tonight and it was cooked to perfection. 13-14 October 2003 Two days at the same centre and both days were busy but the teacher who was in charge was very good to work with and by time the children were ready for their lunch, I was on my way to do some sight seeing. The afternoon of the first day I returned to my unit to eat breakfast, which I chose not to have before leaving ... read more

NEWS FROM PNG #1- From concept to reality. I never sent this first email to my friends and family. My son was one of the thirty-six recipients of my series of emails from Papua New Guinea and I was not sure I wanted to share my sexual fantasies with him. I began the habit with email number two and continued on through my sixteen months. Is this really my birthday? I am 17 hours ahead. This is an adventure. The unknown. One more plane ride. The weariness hits me with the humidity. I am sitting beside Sean, an Englishman who is reading The Sea Wolf by Jack London. The plane has some difficulty - power problems we are told on the return to Port Moresby after the 10-minute ride in the clouds. Sean guides me through ... read more

Having one year of clothes and sulpplies into 1 backpack, reading the t-n-t magazine everyday, eating 23 cent noodles, drinking the cheapest box wine, cramming into a hostel with 10 other people in 1 room, taking up others' slang, and best of all doing things you would never have done before. I have to admit that I've experienced all of this while being a "backpacker." When I get back to the states, people aren't going to be able to know what I am saying or understand me. Being as I work at a pub in cairns, I've taken up sayings like: cheers-thank you, no worries-no problem, and how you going-how are you. It's funny to think we have the English language in common but are sperated by dialogue/slang. First coming over to Australia I wasn't ... read more

7 October 2003 I’m now the proud owner of one of the best digital cameras produced by Canon. I left Melbourne via the Caulder Highway and drove to Castlemain. Along the way I stopped a few times to try out the EOS-10D. I have been this way many times and in the past have promised myself that I should take shots of the countryside. It was a good excuse to try all the settings on the camera. After a few hours I diverted from the Caulder Highway when I saw the sign to Castlemaine and drove into town and started looking for the motel. I assumed the company had pre-booked me into a Budget motel. I searched in vain. After inquiring in another motel the man behind the desk told me I was in the wrong ... read more

Canz or Carns? It's a never-ending dispute of how the name is actually pronounced, but I believe the Aussie pronunciation is "Canz." Cairns- going to a new place you never know what to expect. I'd always thought Cairns was on the ocean, but I guess I thought wrong. Cairns is just the link to all the natural wonders of North Queensland. Although it is the tourist capital of Queensland, walking around today, I saw that it truly is a beautiful city. Surrounded by lush rainforests, it is a very tropical city with a nice, laidback feel about it. There's not much to Cairns, but so far, the atmosphere fits. Walking off the plane, the humidity hit me like a blanket. I felt as though I'd just flown into Orlando from San Diego... the heat is in ... read more

21 September 2003 It wasn’t until today that work took me out of Victoria again. I wanted to travel to Griffith by a different route and noticed on my map a straight stretch of road between Benalla and Cobram which I had not travelled on before. First the roads I drove on were the familiar Goulbourn Valley Highway out of Yea and the Midland Highway that took me into Benalla. About ten kilometres out of that town the road branches to the north. The landscape is fairly flat in this area and farmers have taken advantage of the green pastures, running many head of sheep on their properties. After quite a few kilometres I arrived at the New South Wales border town of Tocumwal where I crossed the Murray River. The weather was uncommonly warm so ... read more
