Me again....am now in Queenstown, the "adventure capital" - i.e. the place where anything that in the real world is too dangerous and/or expensive to do is almost mandatory. Most of it is clearly too scary/expensive for me, but I dare say I'll be getting a bit wet tomorrow in the name of adventure. Most likely jet boating given it happens early and I have to leave in the afternoon. I have been told that recently people have been ejected from it onto rock faces etc. which might put some people off...? Absolutely NO bungy jumping for me though!! FWIW; it does appear to be a town, but I have yet to see any Queens. Have travelled from Franz - Queenstown today on a bus, stopping at a pile of cafes (seems like NZ tourists/drivers need ... read more

Well we did it ... no not run off and get married when none of you were looking, but "The Nevis". 134m of utter terror. I have never been so scared in my entire life. I was a gibbering wreck. Bryan was as cool as a cucumber.. talk about role reversel on the extreme sports. I was nervous when we arrived, I was green when I saw the "small" 43m bridge and by the time I saw the contraption which I was going to hurl myself off I was distraught. You have to get a cable car to a 'pod' swaying percariously on little metal strings in the middle of the canyon. Everyone ahead of me just walked up to the platform and wheeeeeeeee off they went, not even a pause. Then the guy infront of ... read more

Just a swifty as my coach journey (yes, another) books. Tourist information say the trip can't be done in 1 day, the Internet says that it can, and the Internet is always right is it not? Have been for early morning jet boating. Fun enough but not really enough near death experiences, perhaps just a handful of 360-degree spins on gravel next to big pieces of stone. Saying that, it woke me up good and proper so perhaps I need a spin in a jet boat every day before work - that would be if I ever decide to work again. It was pretty fine to be fair to speed dangerousy around all that lotr scenery. The excitement trip was interspersed with commentary about the gold panning history and stuff - edutainment to the max. Did ... read more

We meant to wake up really early to go to a lake called Lake Matheson, where you are supposed to see reflections of Mount Cook in the water and it's beautiful in sunrise or right after. But the night before we met some nice people in the backpacker and we chatted too long... So we still went the all way around the fanmous TINY lake and the views of the high mountains were suberb but the reflections were really poor. No fight to the beauty I saw in Norway on the way to the glacier there, and right from the road... Shai if you find the picture and can send me a copy I will put it here for comparison :-) Then I drove all the long way to Wanaka, during which we stopped in ... read more

I'm writing to tell you all about my huge adventure at the weekend, not quite a extreme as Blair Witch but heading there! Basically last Friday night six of us left Melbourne and headed east to Mount Beauty so that we could climb Mt Bogong (the highest mountain in Victoria) the following morning. After 5 hours of being squished in the back of a car we got to our motel in the early hours of Sat morn, had a few hours sleep and then set off for our 8 hour hike. V. sensibly we went to the info centre to get a map first, but it wasn't opened yet. However, the woman who works there came along, without the key! We told her where we planned to go (up the staircase and dwn Eskdale spur for ... read more

PNG News - Baa February 18th, 2005 Baa Baa Black Sheep Have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir Three bags full One for the master One for the dame And one for the little boy Who lives down the lane. Just down the lane from my official work at Good Shepherd Seminary, senior statesman and PNG’s current governor general, Sir Paulias Matane spoke at the Fr. Peter Secondary School. (February 6, 2005) At the podium, amongst Western Highland’s bigmen, he told us that when he was 17 year old boy he went to school for the first time and memorized this rhyme. He asked his teacher ‘what is a black sheep? And what is wool? What is a dame? And a lane?’ He didn’t ask about the word ‘master’. His teacher, who he suggested had ... read more

We have just spent the last three days in Sydney, which is the longest our beautiful ship has stayed anywhere. Often we are in and out of a port the same day, from early morning till about sunset. But Sydney is such a beautiful place, we stayed here much longer. As you can see from our pics, it’s the home of the famous Sydney Opera House that gives the harbor such distinction. It’s hard to know how to begin describing the city. We entered the harbor between two high bluffs, and saw an impressive skyscraper skyline set on blue water alive with small boats and ferries, with the white wings of the magnificent opera house off to one side. We docked just a few hundred yards from it, and had a fantastic view of its plazas ... read more

A great nights sleep was followed by a trip to the airport via the car rental place, we had to drop Frank off. He was one month and 6,225 KM's older, he'd lost one hub-cap, cracked another one, had a chip the size of a 5p in his windscreen and was filthy, not to mention the broken arm rest that Fiona constantly wrestled with, luckily the dirt covered the numerous scratches to the bodywork. All these things were by no means caused be wreckless driving, I've never had so much as a scratch on any of my own cars, but because of the state of the roads, some are no more than gravel tracks while most of the 'good' roads were being relayed with fresh 'chuckies'. Now I've 'bumped' a hire car before when I was ... read more
