I have no number of how many times some customer on the boat will tell me, with envy blazing out of their eyes, that I am so lucky to do what I am doing. And every time I will patiently reply that in the end of the day this is a job as every other job. Sometimes there are good days, but too often there are not so good days, and sometimes you are just left to ponder why you didn't go for the nice office job... But, when the going is good the going is very good... or something like that. When you have a good day, or a good dive, the whole world is a better place, and you cannot think of one single good reason why you ever would want to give this ... read more

I have now reached New Zealand, which is like everyone says - very beautiful and lovely with great scenery although the weather can be a bit of a tester. If you hear a New Zealander complaining about the rain in England you can tell him where to shove his kiwi fruit as this is meant to be the height of summer and it has rained quite a lot...as you will hear. I arrived in Christchurch in early January and I had a great plan to stay there for a few days, make friends, and buy a campervan with them and tour New Zealand in true old school style! Anyway, possibly due to my lack of social skills, I managed to find not one person who shared the same burning desires towards camper van based travel as ... read more

Woke up early this morning for another day at sea, it couldn't be as successful as yesterday, could it? The weather forecast wasn't good but we were lucky, we were out at 8:15 and although it had been raining earlier it was clear and quite bright, partial cloud cover at times but good spotting conditions. We were looking for Lagenorhnchus obscurus, or the Dusky Dolphin, Dusky Dolphins are found in coastal temperate waters of New Zealand, about 20 mins from the coast of Kaikoura. This species is normally found in small pods of 6 to 15 animals, but larger groups of 20 to 500 animals, or massive aggregations of over 1,000, are also common, according to our guide. They are the most highly social and acrobatic of dolphins, they leap, spin, somersault and often associate with ... read more

I have finally put my green card and work boots to use, and I have got myself some labouring work! Woohoo! Unfortunately its not as fun as it sounds, actually its worse than that. My first job through Worforce International was for a company called Taiyo Membranes. It involved working at a newly constructed retirement village just outside Manly, erecting a steel/PVC awning outside the front of the main building. The job itself was interesting enough, if not bloody hard work. The main problem I had was with the two blokes I was working with. Neither of them seemed to acknowledge my existance apart from when they wanted something doing. Also, as I had to get a lift to and from work with one of them, making conversation to pass the time was like extracting your ... read more

That's it, the real thing - New Zealand. I am really in the "end of the world". I am standing upside down and all the blood goes to my head, and I struggle not to fall down... We are staying in a backpacker that is for women only. That was the only one where I could find a room, but it has some advantages as very nice showers with hair dryers :-) So this morning we walked to the center of Christchurch and found the main square full of people and very happy. There were street performers doing tricks, advanced jugling stuff, dancing, music. They also have a flower festival and they have flowers everywhere but in fact the flowers in their botanic garden, that is not related to the festival, are great and enough by ... read more

Yesterday we arrived in Rockhampton (aka the Mullet Capital of Australia) at the Comfort Inn. It wasn't the nicest place but it was a bed and we were only there for a little bit. All in all probably the worst place we stayed at huring the tour. That night most of us went to the Koorana Crocodile farm where had this HUGE dinner and got to see these ginormous crocs and we even got to taste some! It kind of tastes like chicken but alot tougher. We all got the opportunity to hold a baby crocodile, it was pretty neat, they feel very weird :) If you have to go to any optional dinner, go to this one! It was definitely really interesting and a good time! After that we dropped some people off at a ... read more

This is Harry's 1st journal entry of his intrepid travels and adventures in the 1st year of his life..... After hearing that there was a small snowfall in the mountains (in February....go figure??!!) we decided it was about time Harry had his first sighting of snow (He is nearly 8 weeks old after all). So off to Thredbo we went. Harry loved the trip and the fresh mountain air - defintely a good omen for the upcoming ski season and lots of car travelling and freezing weather. Mum and Dad enjoyed the break from Canberra and the heat, but not so much the pushing the pram up all the hills in Thredbo! ... read more

I hope that you do not mind when I place photos on the web before an actual explanation of the activity. That’s just the way it’s working out at the moment. I find myself with exactly three months left in Australia and about two months left at The Magdalene Centre. It is hard to believe that I have been working an entire month already. Things are very busy, as you would expect when providing emergency assistance. I am very thankful for the opportunity to gain such valuable experience and am finding myself in the working stages of my time there. Last Tuesday, we all took an outing to the Botanic Gardens to watch a movie in the park. Moonlight Cinema shows movies beneath the night sky during the summer months. We had the opportunity to bring ... read more

Once more we are out in the South Pacific, cruising up (toward the equator) from Melbourne to Sidney, Australia. We toured Melbourne yesterday and stopped by their WW2 Memorial, an impressive marble edifice with a large military parade. It seems it was the Aussie Memorial Day, which is Feb. 13 (nobody seems to know why). Then back to the ship for a hurried lunch, after which we were bussed to the local polo grounds at Werribee Park for the England-Australia match. All we knew about polo was what we saw in Pretty Woman, so this was a new experience indeed. But it matched the image we had, down to the “stomping of the divots” between chukkas (quarters, or fifths, or something like that). We were instructed to wear “casual white” for the occasion, but the Aussies ... read more
