Downtown Sydney is only a few hundred feet from the water. Many people commute from surrounding communities by ferries that dock at a wharf only a few steps from the downtown area. Population of greater Sydney is about 3 million. It's the olest city in Australia, the site where the English brought in the boatloads of convicts who were the first settlers in the late 1700s. America was no longer available for getting rid of convicts, so they sent them to Australia. Many were sent for crimes such as stealing a couple of silver spoons or a loaf of bread. Their descendants appear to be doing pretty well!

We have just spent the last three days in Sydney, which is the longest our beautiful ship has stayed anywhere. Often we are in and out of a port the same day, from early morning till about sunset.
