Well, enough of the cappucccinos, the beach by day, freshly grilled barramundi washed down with a decent chablis by night, urbane lifestyle of the Australian eastern coast cities - it was time to see the real Australia - the vast emptyness of the virtually uninhabitable middle. This tortured land, only pioneered by europeans 2 generations ago, is still frontier country, where men are men, and sheep are worried, and a bloke would never be seen dead drinking wine. Firstly, a flight to Alice Springs - the heart of the outback - and the furnace like heat (46 degrees) hit us like a brick when we got off the plane. The red dust all around gave the impression we were on mars, just with a bit of scrubby bushes lying around. The town itself is a huge ... read more

Hey all, hope you are all doing well. Its been great to hear from those that have left comments or emailed me back. Our fumbling up the east coast of australia has brought us to the city of Mackey. Lots done so here we go. after leaving summer, sorry, Byron Bay we made our way to surfers paradise. sounds nice you may think. we thought the same. its basically like tenerife moved on mass to Oz. loads of backpackers out to try the surf out, which actually isn't that good anyway. the most surfy we got was to go to a life saving club and get food. Met a nice couple though and we shared travelling tales and witty, amusing anecdotes. How we laughed. Leaving the next day things improved as we headed north. Stopped off ... read more

The Queen Charlotte Drive Named after an 18th Dutch Queen (this is from a hazy memory now) the Queen Charlotte sounds are an absolutely breathtaking area of New Zealand. They're unspoilt and pristine with countless miles of coastline that winds in and out and in and out seemingly forever - the best way by far to see them would be to sail around them, but we only had the option of driving along the specatacular Queen Charlotte Drive which winds its way from near Picton (where the ferry goes from) along the coastline to the Pelorus river. The road then goes inland and turns into the highway to Nelson - which is what we followed. At times this drive is so beautiful, you just have to stop and look (as is so common in New Zealand) ... read more

Hi All, Here are some photos from basically my backyard at the moment. I am staying with friends Yasmine and Tony in Karekare Beach about 60 minutes west of Auckland. A 3-5 minute walk from their door through some wilderness gets us to the beach you see below. I've been here about 3 days now. We've been into Auckland proper once and to the Corbane Estate Arts Center a couple of times where Tony is helping organize the music acts for a community festival being held there tomorrow (www.wayoutwestfest.org.nz). Tonight we will be heading into town for a little clubbing and to meet up with some people I've been emailing with prior to my arrival. Still a lot of lounging on my part. I will be working at the festival tomorrow so I am not totally ... read more

As I mentioned before, a new period in my trip here started. I am now traveling with an Israeli guy that Shiri & me met a few weeks ago. We discussed a bit and decided we have similar plans, we are both very flexible with the time, and we are both ready to spend money on wine, good food, etc... The only thing is that he did a lot more hiking than me, and now I am planning to do them too! No more only easy walks :-) And the first "test" was right in the beginning: the Avalanche Peak track in Arthur's pass. It's a steep path climbing 1000m in a pretty short way... My god, it was hard! Took us 4.5 hours to climb, but the views from the top were amazing!!! It really ... read more

The French also wanted to colonize New Zealand but when they got here they found that the British came here first. They still had one settelment on a fine bay in Banks Peninsula. The town is called Akaroa and is famous for good French bakeries. The backpacker I stayed in is called "Chez la mer". Well, that's about it with French things there... I took a cruise in the bay to see dolphins and it reminded me too well of my days in the Navy. I was sick and when we came back I couldn't taste any Croissant! What a dissapointment... ... read more

Welcome to clean toilets (with toilet paper!!!!!), friendly people and hot showers (first one in 4 months!!!). After waiting to leave Indonesia for so long we finally arrived in Australia & immediately loved it. Ayers Rock was amazing, we didn't climb it out of respect: the aboriginal people view it as sacred & request that you don't. We also visited The Olgas, which were equally as awe inspiring, & King's Cannyon.....all were truly magnificent but we were plagued by the thousands of flies! ... read more

After almost two weeks of beach life we decided to take a trip to see something of note. The hostel was running a small tour to a local village so we could see how 'real' Fijians live. The village was situated about 25kms inland from the coral coast. Nine of us piled into a truck facing each other and we set of for the bumpy journey. The truck had two uncomfortable wooden benches to sit on and a linoleum roof, at least there was plenty of air flowing through. The road was good for about 5 mins, then we started to climb a steep red mud path through the forrest. There were some amazing views along the road and we stopped for a photo opportunity. About 15kms into the drive our truck got stuck in the ... read more
