Hey guys, I don’t have a lot to report, but I'm in the internet cafe so I figured I'd update my blog. I just got back from 3 nights down at Cornulla (1 hour south of Sydney). I was crashing with Matt Brownlee (thanks matt). It was really nice to hang out with a familiar face. He and his roommates really have a good thing going down there (except for the manual labor thing). It was pretty fun living with them for a short period of time. There were 4 guys (all in one room...double bunk beds) and then 2 girls who shared a queen size bed in the other room. We lived off of NO FRILLS food from the grocery store (which is similar to the "Gaint/FoodLion Brand" but its totally no frills; black and ... read more

The day started with a fine weather and we drove north to see the famous Pancake Rocks. Not much to say about them but the way there and back was awesome - rocks on the shore with all kinds of shapes, and more amazing was the amount of green all around - trees bushes etc, and so close to the sea. Shiri wondered how this all survives with the salt of the sea and then, just about mid-day we got the answer - rain rain rain... I drove 200km in non-stop rain, quiet heavy rain. this part of the road (from Greymouth to Franz Jozef) didn't look as nice as the first one, but maybe we simply couldn't see anything? BTW, a short one about the roads here. I didn't see even one road with 2 ... read more

Another lovely day in New Zealand, Picton is a small sea-side town, it's main purpose is that it's the ferry port to Wellington I guess but it's no Rosyth, it's full of nice boats and small yachts, picturesque vila's on the front and a street of nice cafe's and local shops. After more than 4 weeks of on the road travel we're knackered and looking forward to a rest in Fiji, we've decided to spend 18 nights there now and the plan is to do as little as possible, sind a nice wee beach lie in the sun, catch up on some reading and defo no driving. Sure we'll go on day trips and I'm looking forward to a spot of line fishing but resting the bones is the order of the day, or even fortnight. ... read more

Well haven't left yet, just seeing how this works. I believe I leave Roxby for Canada on the 3rd March 2005. Hanging out to see the snow, as I have never seen snow before. Cool huh.... read more

Hey folks, So thought it was about time we told you what we got up in the glorious pacific island of Fiji. Well, for starters it's a darn sight hotter than where you are!! Smugness over, I promise. We landed in Nadi on 5th February at 4am, having left LA on the 3rd, and crossing the international date line meant that Friday 4th Feb never happened for us. Oh well. We were in a bit of a daze at that time of the morning, but managed to find our way to the tour office and get our transfer to the hotel. I had beans on toast for breakfast, tasted pretty much like back home, which was rather nice. Fiji is (I think) still part of the commonwealth, and so there is a picture of the Queen ... read more

First day out of Christchurch... Getting out of the city in foreign countries always gives me a sense of freedom. I love driving on the long roads, with beautiful views around me. On Arthur's pass we had our first nature walk. Since it was the first we chose the shortest one, need to get used gradually, as we learned in the army :-) So we wnr to some waterfall, that was really beautiful, 131m high. I did see more impressive ones before but I never had enough of waterfalls, I always find them so beautiful.... read more

Well today we had to leave the beauty of Kaikoura. We both loved the place, it had spectacular scenery and our hostel was so cosy. Anyway we are now on the path back up the coast to Picton. Picton is where we will get the ferry across to Wellington and then drive all day (10 hours) up to Auckland so we can catch our flight to Fiji on Friday. When I say we will drive I really mean Andrew because as much as I have offered he has still not accepted, wonder why?!! We are spending two days in a lovely hostel which has a great garden, fully equipped with spa pool. There are loads of sand flies and other little biting creatures here so I bought some super strength insect repellent, Andrew however is still ... read more

I have no number of how many times some customer on the boat will tell me, with envy blazing out of their eyes, that I am so lucky to do what I am doing. And every time I will patiently reply that in the end of the day this is a job as every other job. Sometimes there are good days, but too often there are not so good days, and sometimes you are just left to ponder why you didn't go for the nice office job... But, when the going is good the going is very good... or something like that. When you have a good day, or a good dive, the whole world is a better place, and you cannot think of one single good reason why you ever would want to give this ... read more

I have now reached New Zealand, which is like everyone says - very beautiful and lovely with great scenery although the weather can be a bit of a tester. If you hear a New Zealander complaining about the rain in England you can tell him where to shove his kiwi fruit as this is meant to be the height of summer and it has rained quite a lot...as you will hear. I arrived in Christchurch in early January and I had a great plan to stay there for a few days, make friends, and buy a campervan with them and tour New Zealand in true old school style! Anyway, possibly due to my lack of social skills, I managed to find not one person who shared the same burning desires towards camper van based travel as ... read more

Woke up early this morning for another day at sea, it couldn't be as successful as yesterday, could it? The weather forecast wasn't good but we were lucky, we were out at 8:15 and although it had been raining earlier it was clear and quite bright, partial cloud cover at times but good spotting conditions. We were looking for Lagenorhnchus obscurus, or the Dusky Dolphin, Dusky Dolphins are found in coastal temperate waters of New Zealand, about 20 mins from the coast of Kaikoura. This species is normally found in small pods of 6 to 15 animals, but larger groups of 20 to 500 animals, or massive aggregations of over 1,000, are also common, according to our guide. They are the most highly social and acrobatic of dolphins, they leap, spin, somersault and often associate with ... read more
