Alright, maybe not so much sand. And well, we are in a marina so of course there isn't surf. But the food really is fantastic! Mum, Brian and I went to Stella Maria last night for dinner. Opua is quite tiny - it is only a marina and a few businesses to support a marina. Mom said that it was sold by native Maori's with the condition that it could only ever be just a marina. There are a tiny cluster of buildings just up the road, and just past a huge wooden pier and next to a cute little ice cream shop (NZ's seem to love ice cream, its everywhere!) is Stella Maria. The owner is a lovely woman named Patty who is feisty, quick, intelligent, arty, and fun. She has a massive Newfoundland that ... read more

I have now been here 25 days and still haven't really done a lot in the way of touristy things... However, we have moved from the living room floor of our friends house to a room in this gigantic house. It is a big three bedroom place a few blocks down the road from where we were staying before. There are two others who live there, an aussie and a girl from France who doesn't really speak much english. The flatmates are about as good as they get in a sharehouse situation, everyone keeps to themselves and does their own thing. In our room the ceilings are like 15 feet high and we even have a fireplace (not that we would use it in this heat) but it is nice to wake up and see this ... read more

Oon ihan unohtanu kaikki meidän mokat kirjottaa tänne.. heh heh! siis ollaanhan me oltu jo ainakin 2vuorokautta täällä... ;) Ekana päivänä Minna sai paikalliset huutamaan "Oh my God!" ja mä vaan nauroin vieressä.. "bred and candys" what? :P Tänään kahdeksalta aamulla ystävällin... read more

Picton On our last evening we looked up two friends of Joanne's from Scoraigh(?) and had a good time. Lovely evening. Next morning started brilliantly and we got off on the 10am ferry into the Tory Channel of the Sounds. Half way across the Cook Strait we hit a storm which made the ferry bend over and everyone scuttle inside. It went up and down a bit then. What a change! I'm not sure about this North Island. Wellington Luckily when we prepared the bike and ourselves for the ride into Wellington centre the rain stopped. It was still cool though. However, weather has now improved. We saw Les Arts Sauts on Friday night, The Producers on Saturday night. Visited Te Papa, their wonderful national museum opened fairly recently and right up to date with its ... read more

Sydney! So i finally made it to Australia. My final flight for a few months and i get stopped by customs for a random check. They had to call over the customs manager to check that smuggling in marmite wasn't an arrestable offense, and to verify if i needed to clean my boots. Good good customs agents. Anyway, i'm slowly but surely deciding what i need to be doing with myself. Gonna head out on Monday and get a bank account set up and see about getting tax file numbers and such. Currently looking into work in either the Melbourne or Brisbane area, along with apartments and such in those areas. Gonna visit the harbour and Opera House at some point, thinking i might get to the Tower later this evening for a look of the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast » Punakiaki February 25th 2006

I heard about this great hostel from a couple at Kinloch lodge so I booked two nights here before I left. I wanted to visit Punakiki because it has a rugged coastline and the famous "Blow Holes" where the pounding surf surges through vertical holes in the sandstone and blows up into the sky. Quite dramatic. Anyway I arrived yesterday to a rainforest retreat surrounded by native forest and 8 minutes from an incredible beach. I'm staying in a small A-frame that has windows on the ceiling that look up into the forest and the sky. I can see the stars at night. I have to walk a small trail into my oasis through forest and past other well hidden retreats. My place doesn't have electricity so last night I lit 10 small candles and read ... read more
